The elder is Nathan Phillips, an Omaha elder who is also a Vietnam Veteran and former director of the Native Youth Alliance. New Mexico Congresswoman and Laguna Pueblo tribal member Deb Haaland chastises the boys for their disrespect:
Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) condemned a group of young students for displaying “blatant hate, disrespect, and intolerance” in a viral video apparently taken during Friday’s Indigenous Peoples March in Washington, D.C.
“This Veteran put his life on the line for our country,” Haaland, one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress, wrote on Twitter. “The students’ display of blatant hate, disrespect, and intolerance is a signal of how common decency has decayed under this administration. Let us hope parents will listen to Mr. Phillips and to Representative Haaland, will sit brutish children like those in the video above down to listen to such wise words, and work with people of good conscience to heal our nation from the sickness of Trump.

I wanted to give it a shot, but every time I saw the smirking face under the MAGA hat, I just got a bit too angry to type anything other than profanity.
If I were less of a cynic, I’d offer the “forgive them for they know not what they do” prayer, but the safe bet is that they knew what they were doing, are proud of what they did, and will remain proud of what they did.
One other point, where were the alleged adults? Some of the older faces on the fringe of the crowd seem to be egging on this behavior.
And a right winger told me that it’s the vets fault for walking up to the young people. Video came from Shad Olson. That says it all.
Years ago one of the first jobs I had was working for the Omaha, NE Indian Center. In the job I had I was able to meet many tribal members from the Omaha, Winnebago, Ponca, and Sioux reservations.
I never met Mr. Phillips, but I did meet what I now believe were members of his family.
As I recall the Phillips family were very honorable people as are most of the Omahas.
There was a time in my youths when the actions of these white boys would anger me and I would want to action against them.
With Trump in the White House I now watch almost daily acts of racism and hate against any number of people. If it isn’t Trump doing the hate, it is groups like these brats from racist states. As my Sioux grandmother used to say, “sometimes your heart just needs to bleed”. More and more in this era of Trump, that quote means so much.
Mr. Phillips is a better man than I. My restraint and tolerance wouldn’t be as strong as this great warrior.

The old guy reminds me of the Indians I served with when I was a Marine in the Nam. Stoic, determined, doing the job at hand, bloody as it sometimes was. They were some of the best jarheads I ever knew. I weep for that kid.
I do not have enough adjectives in my vocabulary to describe my outrage. I will say this: as a pacifist, I want nothing more than to smack the smug right off that racist little prick’s face.
My one positive thought is that the internet is forever – those faces will be memorized, identified, and I would say that they will become part of the consideration when they apply for college, or for jobs, for a long, long, long time.
What these young racist white faces tell me is that they know little of their place in this country. They know little of the knowledge that Native people gave to them for their very survival, they know little of the facts that the brown faces they scorn allowed them to be scornful. Their food, their very own form of government that allows the protection of their community and the list goes on.
For example, It would be very interesting to ask their smugness if they had a clue that without Muslims, the American Revolution would have been dead in it’s tracks from smallpox. They would have been speaking the King’s English and we would have a parliamentary government. Abortion would not even be discussed as an issue. Universal healthcare, check. They would be trespassing on Native lands…big check.

The young insolent Covington Catholic School student’s name is Michael Hodge and his passion is cooking and baking. Michael plans on attending the culinary arts program at Cincinnati State, next year. Many are contacting the Covington Archdiocese and voicing their disapproval. Young Mr. Hodge is already begun to have his Andy Warhol moment. As those in my posse are saying, “Let’s make this boy famous.”

A private school in Kentucky apologized Saturday after its students were filmed mocking a Native American elder nearly the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
“We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general,” the school said in a statement. “We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.
“The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion,” the statement said.
Footage filmed near the Lincoln Memorial on Friday showed a group of boys – including several wearing hats bearing President Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again” — taunting a man subsequently identified as Mr. Phillips, a Vietnam War veteran and the former director of the Native Youth Alliance.
This is one of the most disrespectful acts I’ve ever seen by a Trumper! Where in the hell were the adults supervising this outing? Mr Phillips displayed the true warrior spirit by focusing on his honoring song and ignoring a petulant little child with no manners or honor! I can only surmise that he learned this behavior in his home!

Remember how earlier this week, Dakota War College and SDGOP leader Dan Lederman tried to stir up some false outrage over how the Women’s March was somehow anti-Semitic and bigoted? I haven’t seen any videos pop up yet of women marching yesterday and surrounding and taunting Jews engaged in peaceful demonstrations on the street.
Yet here we have a video of boys involved in the Right to Life march surrounding, taunting, and intimidating an Indian elder. The SDGOP has yet to issue any statement urging its members to dissociate themselves with a national march shamefully tinged with active racism and bullying bigotry.

Well, here’s the thing: A truly accurate narrative may be hard to garner without having been there, and even then, but the smirk on that kids face and the joyous disrespectful smiles do speak for themselves to some degree. However, a much longer video shows the black men taunting the students calling them products of incest, hyenas, dogs. We do have to take into account their age, brain maturation is a real thing, and of course where were the adults? The students were already agitated, jumping up and down, yelling their school name, all stupid before Nathan Phillips entered the scene and came up to them. The earlier narrative of them surrounding him and taunting the black men is not accurate, or certainly up for debate. I’m not trying to let them off the hook, the smirks and mock dancing are obvious, but for the sake of being objective it does blur the earlier black and white coverage.
On this page Tim Pool’s post shows an almost 2-hour video “Mirror of Shar Y…” there was bad behavior all around before Nathan Phillips approached the students, so think crowd behavior, entitled youth, provocative activism before making a final decision. Did they act stupidly? Yes. And racist? Sure looks like it. Should Nathan Phillips have inserted himself into that mess? Probably not.

Happy, I don’t agree. Mr. Phillips had every right to do what he did. His fearlessness is admirable and a lesson. Lack of cultural awareness (and boys will be boys) by the boys is an excuse for racist behaviors. One thing that has been playing in the back of my head is “teenage brain.” They really don’t think like a reasonable adult; neither does that boy. Yes, he’s responsible for his actions, but even more responsible is the adult chaperones who must be AWOL.

I always assume elders deserve respect until proven otherwise. Because Mr. Phillips didn’t know exactly what he was getting into does not indicate to me he should not be respected. To me it shows that he had the courage to act anyway because he felt it was necessary and his calling.

There was actually this sweet moment when the older black men yelled to the two black Catholic students “they’re gonna steal your organs when you grow up” and the white Catholics kids yelled back “we love them.” Watch the long version DC attracts a bunch of crazies those kids should not have been left alone.
I watched the whole video. The three men who were the original instigators said horribly deragatory and unwarranted slurs toward Native Americans that were present. I’m well aware of how the teenage brain develops, especially in boys and the behavior of these kids is not within the norms of “typical teenage behavior”. We have a president who incites and encourages hate and violent language. We have GOP parents who send their kids to Pro/life Marches without teaching them to value or respect existing lives. What was missing in all of this was civil conversation, basic respect and love.
I am thinking of the Port Huron preamble “”We are people of this generation, bred in at least modest comfort, housed now in universities, looking uncomfortably to the world we inherit.” It looks as though the school has now apologized for these students. Could it be that this may be a defining moment or will it just be another example of how we all are manipulated to ignore what is going on around us. How can we not see the hateful damage being done to ourselves and our planet? Our sides have been drawn, let us begin to either destroy ourselves or make our inherited world better.

This partially explains the look on young Mr. Hodge’s face and the kids behind him. It’s since been removed but when I first researched him there was a photo of the young man in an MMA ring with MMA fighting gloves and boxing trunks on. Look at the photo with that info. The kids behind him know he’s a trained fighter and what would happen to the elder if he touched the kid. They’re just hoping for a chance to see their classmate go off on the old gentleman.

Reason Magazine has come out to say the media has wildly mischaracterized the video and “Phillips’ account, meanwhile, is at best flawed, and arguably deliberately misleading.”
From their article quoting follows, per Phillips: …. the teenagers “were in the process of attacking these four black individuals” and he decided to attempt to de-escalate the situation. He seems profoundly mistaken: The video footage taken by the black nationalists shows no evidence the white teenagers had any intention of attacking. Nevertheless, Phillips characterized the kids as “beasts” and the hate-group members as “their prey”:
“There was that moment when I realized I’ve put myself between beast and prey,” Phillips said. “These young men were beastly and these old black individuals was their prey, and I stood in between them and so they needed their pounds of flesh and they were looking at me for that.”
Again, all the evidence suggests that Phillips got it backward.

As I look back, the photos of the young man confronting Mr. Phillips and the photos on the Facebook page of Covington student Michael Hodge are a match. It’s not that rare for teenaged boys to have more than one facebook page, usually to attract or trick teenaged girls.
No, Edwin, the racism in the tomahawk chop, shouting “build a wall” at a Native American man, and that disrespectful smirk are all pretty cut and dried.
So they were harassed first, the Catholic boys. You do the Christian thing, and perhaps say a silent prayer for the rude demonstrators and politely move away from the situation. At about 1:12:00, you can see where the natives with drums moved in between the boys and the muslim group. It appears the kids were staying put, even going as far as sitting down prior, while others were moving in on them. Frankly, I found the muslim group to be the worst behaved.
I don’t have time to analyze every second of the video but I think it is pretty clear that these kids weren’t given a fair assessment with that short clip that the media was running with. The tomahawk chop is definitely racist but I didn’t find that clip in here so if that happened, they should be condemned for that.
What I really find interesting is the focus on those boys and not the other groups. I also think Philip’s assessment was rather odd. These kids were moved in on by others and they have no obligation to move or back down. This was crappy journalism from the start and I think you are going to see some backlash about that. Their school song chants are nothing compared to the rhetoric that is being screamed by other in that scene. If the media is going to run with the story that these kids are bad, they for sure should have run with the much more obvious bad behavior on the part of the other groups.

They may have been taunted by the black men, but their apparel and their demeanor shows that they didn’t come to the Lincoln Memorial to profess peace on earth and good will to all people. But that is what Mr. Phillips was attempting to do.

All good points and good discussion in here. Lots to discuss, but I’ll just make two points:
1. I thought the leering stare and aggressive stance was interesting because not only was it disrespectful in modern American culture, it is doubly disrespectful in Native culture.
I am not an Indian, but I have learned a few things about the importance of passiveness / aggressiveness in those Cultures from working with Cheyenne and Arapaho leaders in some of my school work. If people would take the time to learn simple things, like showing respect with a weak handshake and lack of eye contact, or waiting for someone to finish their thought rather than interrupting or filling the silence with words, there would be a lot less misunderstandings.
Obviously these students are a long way from caring about any of that, but I think that knowledge is the off-ramp from intolerance. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, Roger, or anyone else.
2. These kids seem to suffer from wealth and entitlement, but the fact that they are also Catholic is too emphasized, I think. Catholics on the whole have become similarly Liberal/Conservative to the general population. Obviously they have their sticking points, like on abortion, but most of the Catholics I know are pretty socially liberal and tolerant.
Those that are MAGA should probably learn a little more about America’s long history of marginalizing Catholics. Yes, many of them came here to escape persecution in Europe, but they have been a disliked/hated group by the majority protestants for most of our history.
Especially in the 1920’s when they were targets of the (then very popular in the Midwest) Ku Klux Klan. They were hated as much or more than Jews and blacks. We all have short memories, I guess.

Covington School needs to lose tax exemptions because they are obviously participating in political activities and politically indoctrinating the students.
The Covington parents/chaperones/teachers were entirely derelict in their duty and ought to be catching all kinds of censure from the administration and school board, or whatever runs that so called school.
The kid with his face in Mr. Phillips’ is an arrogant little sh*t who needs lessons in manners. He deserves serious consequences for his rudeness.
All the students need a big fat lecture on behavior at school activities and the school should ban all high school field trips for the 2019-2020 school year.
Mr. Phillips role was actually quite brief and successful. He diffused the tension between the groups when the MAGAts-in-training focused on him and the 2 or 3 others with him. I see no reason to blame him for anything.
The Black guy was the instigator of all of it. He was extremely provocative, a dark version of Alex Jones with the theological ridiculousness of Pat Robertson. If he was white he would be a hero of MAGAts everywhere. He’d still be a jackass, regardless of skin color.

For now people in the US have a 1st Amendment right to wear any type of clothing they feel advertises their values and morality. We can wear Nazi helments, Klan hats and robes, swastikas, f*ck you tattoos, or other external accrutements evidencing our white supremacy or hatred or fear of others, including people of different religions, races and nationalities. After all, it is important for us to be able to openly reveal our values, morals and what we believe in. Also, it is helpful for the world to see such objective evidence of what an individual believes in, as this helps recognize know who displays values and morals to trust and respect and who might be a danger to others of different religions, races or nationalities.
MAGA hats are a classic example of an external posting of morals and values that would be protected by the 1st Amendment. Although I wouldn’t wear one because it contradicts my values, I would never tell Pearson that the 1st Amendment does not protect his choice to wear his MAGA hat. He and the students here have the 1st Amendment right to tell the world they ares either hate filled racists or merely morer victims of another Donald Trump scam (think Trump University).

I’ve seen a lot of chatter about the disgraceful incident involving students from Covington Catholic High School and an Indigenous American and Veteran in Washington, DC this weekend. This morning, as news of the “full video” began to break, people started hedging, saying that there were “multiple perspectives.” Here’s my perspective.
I served an Episcopal parish in Northern Kentucky, approximately 15 minutes from Covington Catholic High School. It’s a prestigious all-male school with a reputation for strong academics and strong athletics. You can learn that much from the website.
What you won’t learn from the website is that there is a sinister pattern of similar behavior within the Diocese. While the Bishop there concerns himself with bizarre pronouncements (such as admonishing the faithful not to hold hands during the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer) and quashing “unorthodox hymns” that are otherwise approved for use in the Catholic church, he also has created a culture that is not only anti-LGBT, but also actively seeking out teachers and other administrators who might even hold sympathetic views toward people who are LGBT.
As a (retired) soccer referee, I dreaded officiating matches where Covington Catholic was involved. The fans were always among the rudest, most disrespectful, and mean-spirited that I’ve encountered–and I’ve refereed for a long time at almost every level of the game! Student after student has come forward over the years to try and shed light on the abuses that not just LGBT students faced, but students of color. Racial epithets and slurs were commonplace in the halls.
My point is that what we’re seeing on the (many) videos circulating should not come as a shock. It is a continuation of a long and disgusting pattern of toxicity and abuse that has been allowed and even encouraged at all levels of the school and, as far as I can tell, from the diocese.
While we might be concerning ourselves with “who moved first” or “who moved toward whom” in the video, I encourage you to reflect on this: notice the posture and demeanor of the young man. There is a troubling display of xenophobia embedded here. It’s the kind that says that white bodies (read: white, cis, straight, male bodies) can be anywhere they choose at any time, but that non-white bodies (read: non-cis, straight, male bodies) must first seek permission to exist outside of their “place.” This is a window into a perverse system that thrives on toxic, fragile masculinity embedded with xenophobia. And it’s not pretty. Let those who have ears to hear, listen.”

I will grant you this, perhaps young minds do not understand that the hat stands for anti-life goals. Unfortunately I can describe just such an personal experience from my childhood.
When I was around 11 or 12 years old I somehow acquired a Nazi military helmet, which seemed so cool as a war memento since I was fascinated by all things military at that age. I even had toy soldiers that I would play with by engaging them in battles for my entertainment. I lived in a Jewish neighborhood in suburban Minneapolis and most of my friends were Jewish. I knew their parents, enjoyed Jewish cusine at their homes, and was oblivious to the holocaust and other atrocities committed by the Nazis. One Halloween I dressed in an army style jacket and wore the Nazi helmet as my costume. I got a lot of strange looks that I didn’t understand at the time. Later, when it dawned on me what my costume stood for I was mortified. To this day I still shoulder guilt for my young stupidity.
Thus, I can accept your argument that the MAGA hat might mean something different to naive children, such as those linked by mfi. Just as with my Nazi war helmet, I see no excuse, however, for any adult to deny what that hat stands for, namely, fear and hatred of people from south of our border, muslims, people of color, and a desire to demean, marginalize, and exclude others.

Second, a point that happy seems to have overlooked is that the SCOTUS has repeatedly ruled that the 1st and 14th Amendments restrict the government from punishing people that express their viewpoints with the very means denied by happy – their clothing. Such rulings would be nonsensical if happy’s position that what someone wears says nothing about them or their views had any validity.
In Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Community School Dist., 393 U. S. 503(1969), the Court ruled in favor of young people about the same age as the young people wearing MAGA hats here. Three public school pupils in Des Moines, Iowa, were suspended from school for wearing black armbands to protest the Government’s policy in Vietnam. In ruling the Court observed, ” the wearing of armbands . . . was closely akin to “pure speech” which, we have repeatedly held, is entitled to comprehensive protection under the First Amendment.” Id. at 505-506.
Likewise, in Cohen v. California, 403 U.S. 15 (1971), the Court upheld Cohen’s right to wear a jacket with language protesting the Vietnam war.
It looks like happy’s desires have outweighed his objective evaluation of the meaning of MAGA hats and the views intended to be expressed by wearing those hats. Indeed, he has offered no evidence that this hat expresses support for a single non-Trump viewpoint. As quoted above from happy’s own link, “When one wears that hat, one is saying they agree with Trump’s policies and behaviors. Since he has openly shown he is a racist, elitist, misogynistic, corrupt person, then wearing that hat says one agrees with those ways.”
And as an aside, I attended the BH Stock Show in Rapid this afternoon along with thousands of people. With this thread in mind, I looked for MAGA hats. I saw a whole lot of caps, but nary a MAGA cap. It renewed my faith a bit in our local community.

In Tinker the balck arm bands were designed to convey a specific message. And in this case the hats were designed by the maker to convey a specific message. I believe POC are better at recognizing racism than others in general. I’m not saying there are never exceptions, but overall? I’d take the word of a POC over a white person.
I do identify more with minorities because I am a woman. In terms of raw numbers, we are a majority, but just like POC, we are largely excluded from positions of power by the white male structure. Women are classified as a minority for that reason.
Racism or misogyny is rarely an excuse, but often perceived as such by those who are in possession of power because it’s not something they experience. That’s not about blaming white males. The problem is their refusal to believe the minorities when they describe their experiences. It’s not something white males can easily understand because it’s not their experience.
That’s how having privilege works; that’s what it means. The others have to appeal to the powerful. What a deal.

Spike Lee and others are boycotting Gucci so they have apologized. Earlier today I noticed the company made another ski mask in white with red around the lips and many others with tan and various colors. That ski mask was sold last year (in the second link) and take note of the weird things they do in “high fashion” many of which one could find offense. You have an interesting viewpoint Porter. We all have a perspective we want to think is right, but I’m trying to include what other people tell me about their experiences (beyond this blog). Their perspective is valid too. I know some “minorities” who say there is no discrimination, which seems more like a coping mechanism or maybe they really have hardly experienced it. I can right now picture this black guy from the military telling me this and he was being sincere. He was a confident, likable person which worries me we are not teaching kids that life is a darn hard struggle for just about everybody. Did you work hard in your restaurant? Or did your success come to you just because you were white? When you made this flip from Republican, which is probably something worth understanding for oneself if not for others because it’s a very curious thing as with Cory, it seems to have been from some very dramatic causes, one being how ruthless capitalism can be even though it had been benefiting you previously. You seemed to be doing all the right things to get ahead, being responsible, working hard, being creative, right down the line, but an unregulated insurance market threw everything in disarray. So the lesson, to me it might be moderation over an ideology, looking at things individually, not relying on the structure to resolve all problems, but some problems. This rift between these two sides remain: the structure versus the individual when it should be obvious neither one is a complete answer. Equality of opportunity versus equality of outcome neither can ever occur completely but there’s a huge area for compromise. While I tend to look at the responsibilities of the individual first and what that can accomplish, a conservative view I guess, I understand that sometimes what other posters say has validity, but going entirely one way to blame the structure for everything would leave people to feel as though they have no agency in the world which is a very harmful thing to my mind. That’s not at all an empowering narrative and an incorrect one, and it seems we do live our lives through a running narrative which is why the story is so imporant, and why we argue about it.

The claim against WaPo is that the paper reported that the kid instigated a confrontation with Phillips. The claim also asserts that the kid physically intimidated Phillips. The claim also asserts that the kid engaged in racist taunts.
The kid DID instigate a confrontation and intimidate Phillips by standing only 12 inches from Phillips face. An intimidating distance for a senior citizen. The kid didn’t personally engage in racist taunts although his clothing (MAGA HAT) did.
The kid suffered NO permanent damages to his character or future. Nothing that every teenager doesn’t experience, often.
No damages are owed. Suit dismissed.
