Trumpist White Boys Mock Native Men at Indigenous People’s March in Washington

Ah, the smug racism of white boys wearing Trump caps:

Appalling, boys. But his is the behavior to which Donald Trump inspires white boys.

Indian Country Today tells us about the Omaha elder and veteran standing and drumming whom the white boys in the video mock:

The elder is Nathan Phillips, an Omaha elder who is also a Vietnam Veteran and former director of the Native Youth Alliance. He is also a keeper of a sacred pipe and holds an annual ceremony honoring Native American veterans in the Arlington National Cemetery [Vincent Schilling, “Outrage as Non-Native Youth Wearing #MAGA Hats Taunt and Disrespect Native Elder,” Indian Country Today, 2019.01.19].

Mr. Phillips offered his view of the incident on Instagram:

New Mexico Congresswoman and Laguna Pueblo tribal member Deb Haaland chastises the boys for their disrespect:

Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) condemned a group of young students for displaying “blatant hate, disrespect, and intolerance” in a viral video apparently taken during Friday’s Indigenous Peoples March in Washington, D.C.

“This Veteran put his life on the line for our country,” Haaland, one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress, wrote on Twitter. “The students’ display of blatant hate, disrespect, and intolerance is a signal of how common decency has decayed under this administration. Heartbreaking” [Morgan Gstalter, “Haaland Condemns Students’ Behavior Toward Native Elder at Indigenous People’s March,” The Hill, 2019.01.19].

Let us hope parents will listen to Mr. Phillips and to Representative Haaland, will sit brutish children like those in the video above down to listen to such wise words, and work with people of good conscience to heal our nation from the sickness of Trump.

MAGA hats! I am truly surprised… not. I want to hear how there are, “really good people… on both sides,” when it comes to this type of harassment. Mr Thune? Mr Rounds? Care to take a shot at this? I’m sure we won’t hear from The Donald.

  2. Kal Lis 2019-01-19 16:18

Thanks for writing this one up Cory.

I wanted to give it a shot, but every time I saw the smirking face under the MAGA hat, I just got a bit too angry to type anything other than profanity.

If I were less of a cynic, I’d offer the “forgive them for they know not what they do” prayer, but the safe bet is that they knew what they were doing, are proud of what they did, and will remain proud of what they did.

One other point, where were the alleged adults? Some of the older faces on the fringe of the crowd seem to be egging on this behavior.

  3. owen reitzel 2019-01-19 16:35

And a right winger told me that it’s the vets fault for walking up to the young people. Video came from Shad Olson. That says it all.

Years ago one of the first jobs I had was working for the Omaha, NE Indian Center. In the job I had I was able to meet many tribal members from the Omaha, Winnebago, Ponca, and Sioux reservations.
I never met Mr. Phillips, but I did meet what I now believe were members of his family.
As I recall the Phillips family were very honorable people as are most of the Omahas.
There was a time in my youths when the actions of these white boys would anger me and I would want to action against them.
With Trump in the White House I now watch almost daily acts of racism and hate against any number of people. If it isn’t Trump doing the hate, it is groups like these brats from racist states. As my Sioux grandmother used to say, “sometimes your heart just needs to bleed”. More and more in this era of Trump, that quote means so much.
Mr. Phillips is a better man than I. My restraint and tolerance wouldn’t be as strong as this great warrior.

  5. John Tsitrian 2019-01-19 16:48

The old guy reminds me of the Indians I served with when I was a Marine in the Nam. Stoic, determined, doing the job at hand, bloody as it sometimes was. They were some of the best jarheads I ever knew. I weep for that kid.

  6. SDBlue 2019-01-19 17:12

I do not have enough adjectives in my vocabulary to describe my outrage. I will say this: as a pacifist, I want nothing more than to smack the smug right off that racist little prick’s face.

  7. Eve Fisher 2019-01-19 17:22

My one positive thought is that the internet is forever – those faces will be memorized, identified, and I would say that they will become part of the consideration when they apply for college, or for jobs, for a long, long, long time.

  8. jerry 2019-01-19 17:25

What these young racist white faces tell me is that they know little of their place in this country. They know little of the knowledge that Native people gave to them for their very survival, they know little of the facts that the brown faces they scorn allowed them to be scornful. Their food, their very own form of government that allows the protection of their community and the list goes on.

For example, It would be very interesting to ask their smugness if they had a clue that without Muslims, the American Revolution would have been dead in it’s tracks from smallpox. They would have been speaking the King’s English and we would have a parliamentary government. Abortion would not even be discussed as an issue. Universal healthcare, check. They would be trespassing on Native lands…big check.

Owen, no offense, but your video didn’t show a whole lot. I found a longer video that shows the gentlemen surrounded by a crowd doing tomahawk chops and making noises. Someone reported the Native vet croosed a couple hundred feet of open spacre to confront crowd. It appears he was pretty well surrounded to me. From GQ-

The young insolent Covington Catholic School student’s name is Michael Hodge and his passion is cooking and baking. Michael plans on attending the culinary arts program at Cincinnati State, next year. Many are contacting the Covington Archdiocese and voicing their disapproval. Young Mr. Hodge is already begun to have his Andy Warhol moment. As those in my posse are saying, “Let’s make this boy famous.”
As my hero Roger says, “There was a time in my youth when the actions of these white boys would anger me and I would want to action against them. Mr. Phillips is a better man than I. My restraint and tolerance wouldn’t be as strong as this great warrior.”

  13. mike from iowa 2019-01-19 18:13

The Magat crowd sounded like fans from Florida State Semi9noles footballm games doing their chops and Indian chants. That is probably the extent iof their Native history knowledge.

  14. Spike 2019-01-19 18:22

When this country goes to war, native women and men step up to the front of the line. Be they Lakotas, Ojibwa, Comanche, Navajo etc. From the reservations, from the cities and from small town America. Always have, always will. It’s our country too.

Thank you John Tristian for your acknowledgment. And for your service.

Unfortunately those boys role model appears to be the President of the United States instead of the pope.

    Geez…

A private school in Kentucky apologized Saturday after its students were filmed mocking a Native American elder nearly the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

“We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general,” the school said in a statement. “We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

“The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion,” the statement said.

Footage filmed near the Lincoln Memorial on Friday showed a group of boys – including several wearing hats bearing President Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again” — taunting a man subsequently identified as Mr. Phillips, a Vietnam War veteran and the former director of the Native Youth Alliance.

  16. Frank M Dillard 2019-01-19 18:33

This is one of the most disrespectful acts I’ve ever seen by a Trumper! Where in the hell were the adults supervising this outing? Mr Phillips displayed the true warrior spirit by focusing on his honoring song and ignoring a petulant little child with no manners or honor! I can only surmise that he learned this behavior in his home!

  18. Francis Schaffer 2019-01-19 19:41

Someone must not be too happy, the school Facebook page was deleted and the website for the Diocese of Covington seems to be off line. I wonder if it is a Jesuit school?

American youth are ready. The U.S. is one step away from its own Kristalnacht.

  20. Jenny 2019-01-19 20:16

That is the typical Catholic mentality for you. I grew up amongst some of the rudest obnoxious Catholic bullies and this is really how a lot of them are. There is a LOT of hypocrisy in that church.
They are white boys, they will not be expelled. The Priests were probably actually secretly turned on by their repulsive alpha behavior.

  21. John Tsitrian 2019-01-19 21:34

I was privileged to serve, Spike, and appreciate your comment. Two of my tightest buds in the Nam were Indian guys, one an Ojibwa (known commonly as Chippewa back then) from Wisconsin, the other a Havasupai who haled from a tribe at the base of the Grand Canyon. Steadiest guys you ever saw, whether the sh*t was hitting the fan or not.

  22. Rj 2019-01-19 23:03

This clip has been haunting me since I watched it. It’s disgusting and heartbreaking. This is Trump and this is the GOP. Hate, unprovoked anger and ignorance. These kids need to be expelled and the Catholic church needs to take a hard look at what Jesus would do. The GOP breeds hate.

  23. clara hart 2019-01-20 00:26

The youth staring at the old man was trying to intimidate him. I am curious as to was going on his head. I would not be surprised to hear some day confessing publicly about his behavior. As a young man, he should not have stared straight into his eyes . My stomach was repulsed and still is. May that young man find peace. So Sad for Mr. Nathan Phillips.

  24. Debbo 2019-01-20 00:30

Kurt Eichenwald is a reliable source and he tweeted this:

“The more I read from alums of Covington catholic about the abuse, bullying and cruelty there, the more I come to believe that the students thuggish behavior is a feature of the school, not a symptom. Just like with all Trumpism – based on bullying, arrogance, and hatred.”

Remember how earlier this week, Dakota War College and SDGOP leader Dan Lederman tried to stir up some false outrage over how the Women’s March was somehow anti-Semitic and bigoted? I haven’t seen any videos pop up yet of women marching yesterday and surrounding and taunting Jews engaged in peaceful demonstrations on the street.

Yet here we have a video of boys involved in the Right to Life march surrounding, taunting, and intimidating an Indian elder. The SDGOP has yet to issue any statement urging its members to dissociate themselves with a national march shamefully tinged with active racism and bullying bigotry.

  26. John 2019-01-20 08:00

How could the long, glorious tradition of the Catholic Church, stand by while this happened, especially in the light of its member’s supporting a pussy-grabber presi . . . uh, never mind.

  27. marvin kammerer 2019-01-20 09:41

i will try once again to make a comment here. this young man & his friends are an insult to the church, any church if they have any values.their actions are the same as the youth following the goose-steps of hitlers fascist youth. as a catholic these people are a disgrace to my religion & my country!especially my native american friends & associates.

  28. happy camper 2019-01-20 09:46

Well, here’s the thing: A truly accurate narrative may be hard to garner without having been there, and even then, but the smirk on that kids face and the joyous disrespectful smiles do speak for themselves to some degree. However, a much longer video shows the black men taunting the students calling them products of incest, hyenas, dogs. We do have to take into account their age, brain maturation is a real thing, and of course where were the adults? The students were already agitated, jumping up and down, yelling their school name, all stupid before Nathan Phillips entered the scene and came up to them. The earlier narrative of them surrounding him and taunting the black men is not accurate, or certainly up for debate. I’m not trying to let them off the hook, the smirks and mock dancing are obvious, but for the sake of being objective it does blur the earlier black and white coverage.

On this page Tim Pool’s post shows an almost 2-hour video “Mirror of Shar Y…” there was bad behavior all around before Nathan Phillips approached the students, so think crowd behavior, entitled youth, provocative activism before making a final decision. Did they act stupidly? Yes. And racist? Sure looks like it. Should Nathan Phillips have inserted himself into that mess? Probably not.

Happy, I don’t agree. Mr. Phillips had every right to do what he did. His fearlessness is admirable and a lesson. Lack of cultural awareness (and boys will be boys) by the boys is an excuse for racist behaviors. He’s a real warrior and represents the diversity of this country, not like their apparent role model and hero corporal draft dodger bone spurs.

I know many great high schoolers that would never act like those punks did. Their school should be embarrassed and humiliated.

Mr. Phillips responses have been kind and heartfelt. His concern for this great country is so deep and genuine it will take your breath away.

How many times was Dr. Martin Luther King confronted like this? Gandi? Jesus?

  31. happy camper 2019-01-20 12:08

I’m not calling their age an excuse but a reason to understand the dynamics. A couple days ago commenters were willing to look at the prison system and say incarceration is a product of abusive upbringing, mental illness, etc. Twenty five percent of death-row inmates have an undeveloped frontal cortex AS DO TEENAGERS this makes it very difficult for them to restrain themselves. If on one hand we are willing to look at that, Porter called for rehabilitation as did Deb and Eve, then should we try to destroy their culinary career for the rest of their lives (Porter) or acknowledge they can’t be fully responsible for the environment they were indoctrinated. I too was a hypocrite yesterday wanting to smack that smile off that kids face what a pleasure that would have been and jumped the gun too soon before seeing more information. When Tsitrian makes investments does he study all the disclosure statements or just throw down the money? We reacted emotionally and let our biases pull us around like a ring in a bull. Always always always we should try to get the complete story before making a judgment or we’re doing a disservice and bring shame to ourselves for not trying to be a logical person.

I just don’t understand where the adult chaperones were in all of this.
They are as much to blame for allowing this to happen. They need to be held accountable also for not doing their jobs. Negligence on their part.

  33. Jenny 2019-01-20 12:20

As always, the pubs are trying to spin this and blame it on those darn black protesters that were taunting them first. The (missing chaperones could have moved the group away from them. Or what about mature teenagers doing the right thing and walking away from loud taunting protesters?
The native american vet walked up to the high school group with his drum to try to stop the tension (his words). The teenagers circled around him and were obnoxiously taunting him. Again, I don’t see a chaperone in sight. The teens need to do the right thing and apologize to the elderly vet.

“White people go back to Europe where you came from this is not your land.” What would you call that? Provocation. So when you throw all the source materials into the mix I see bad behavior on all sides. The black men also called the two African American students the bad N word. Watch the video below the guy with the red hat goes on to say much more in the second. One strong possibility is Nathan Phillips and his group was trying to create a video opportunity looks like it was planned they had no reason to seek out the students. The second video link (9 minutes) shows it was just one big mess. Always handy Mike to dismiss a source you don’t like the fact remains the black men were agitating the students calling them dogs, hyenas, and products of incest. I am disgusted by all. Lastly Tim Pool gives a more balanced opinion on what happned.

The right wings of the GOP, like Shad Olsen, have been attempting to spin this story into something it isn’t.
From the start Mr. Phillips explained what happened and why he did what he did. Why won’t people just listen to him?
Nathan admitted stepping between the two groups to distract the potential for real violence.
As a Indian warrior Nathan Phillips knew what he was doing by placing himself in harms way to prevent blood shed and violence.
Water protector, Phillips, made a sacrifice and now is being chastised by the radical right.

I’ve only watched a couple brief snippets. Anyone younger treating a respectable elder of any skin color like that just sickens me.

One thing that has been playing in the back of my head is “teenage brain.” They really don’t think like a reasonable adult; neither does that boy. Yes, he’s responsible for his actions, but even more responsible is the adult chaperones who must be AWOL.

Most responsible of all is his mother, who’s shown by her reaction to this that she should share whatever negative consequences result. Shame on her.

I sentence her to one year of remedial parenting classes, 52 sessions, without fail and with mouth duct taped shut.

  47. Roger Cornelius 2019-01-20 20:15

150 Catholic white boys attending a pro-life protest, where are the 150 Catholic white girls attending the Women’s March?

  48. Debbo 2019-01-20 20:27

No, no, no, Roger. Good little Roman Catholic girls/women do as they’re told and have lotsa babies, obey the hubs and worship the priest. That’s their subservient place in service to Vatican, Inc.

  49. Debbo 2019-01-20 20:32

Thankfully, there are plenty of Roman Catholic girls and women who are not “good” regarding their designated place in the hierarchy. Some are nuns, often fantastic women who let the boys go ahead and believe they are in charge.

Some wonderful women I know stick around in the RCC because they want to change it from within. They have more spirit and fortitude than I do.

Personally, I wish all the dissatisfied women would take a walk. The church would collapse in a heap almost instantly.

  50. happy camper 2019-01-20 20:34

All boys school Deb you can’t watch two snippets and condemn. How would anyone know who is a respectable elder if you don’t even know them? As I see more the adults are dumber than the kids why were they left alone? Why did the Native Americans tell them to go back to Europe? Why did adult black men use racial and homophobic slurs? So much stupidity it was a disaster waiting to happen!!! From Newquist link “Phillips told Indian Country Today he admitted that he didn’t really realize what he had gotten into until he was in the middle of it.” I’m sorry sometimes you just have to laugh rather than cry.

  51. Debbo 2019-01-20 20:49

HC, I was responding to Roger and commenting on the Roman Catholic Church. As for the incident, I agreed with you about the teenage brain. It’s a real thing.

I always assume elders deserve respect until proven otherwise. Because Mr. Phillips didn’t know exactly what he was getting into does not indicate to me he should not be respected. To me it shows that he had the courage to act anyway because he felt it was necessary and his calling.

As for Dr. Newquist’s link, I tried to watch, but I’m having some wifi problems so I’ll do that tomorrow at another location. Until then I’m not commenting any longer on blame.

  52. Debbo 2019-01-20 20:52

Oh, HC, my comment immediately following Dr. Newquist’s? I was writing that before his was posted. You can see that the time stamps are close together.

  53. happy camper 2019-01-20 20:53

There was actually this sweet moment when the older black men yelled to the two black Catholic students “they’re gonna steal your organs when you grow up” and the white Catholics kids yelled back “we love them.” Watch the long version DC attracts a bunch of crazies those kids should not have been left alone.

  54. Rj 2019-01-20 21:06

I watched the whole video. The three men who were the original instigators said horribly deragatory and unwarranted slurs toward Native Americans that were present. I’m well aware of how the teenage brain develops, especially in boys and the behavior of these kids is not within the norms of “typical teenage behavior”. We have a president who incites and encourages hate and violent language. We have GOP parents who send their kids to Pro/life Marches without teaching them to value or respect existing lives. What was missing in all of this was civil conversation, basic respect and love.

  55. jerry 2019-01-20 22:40

I am thinking of the Port Huron preamble “”We are people of this generation, bred in at least modest comfort, housed now in universities, looking uncomfortably to the world we inherit.” It looks as though the school has now apologized for these students. Could it be that this may be a defining moment or will it just be another example of how we all are manipulated to ignore what is going on around us. How can we not see the hateful damage being done to ourselves and our planet? Our sides have been drawn, let us begin to either destroy ourselves or make our inherited world better.

This partially explains the look on young Mr. Hodge’s face and the kids behind him. It’s since been removed but when I first researched him there was a photo of the young man in an MMA ring with MMA fighting gloves and boxing trunks on. Look at the photo with that info. The kids behind him know he’s a trained fighter and what would happen to the elder if he touched the kid. They’re just hoping for a chance to see their classmate go off on the old gentleman.

Reason Magazine has come out to say the media has wildly mischaracterized the video and “Phillips’ account, meanwhile, is at best flawed, and arguably deliberately misleading.”

From their article quoting follows, per Phillips: …. the teenagers “were in the process of attacking these four black individuals” and he decided to attempt to de-escalate the situation. He seems profoundly mistaken: The video footage taken by the black nationalists shows no evidence the white teenagers had any intention of attacking. Nevertheless, Phillips characterized the kids as “beasts” and the hate-group members as “their prey”:

“There was that moment when I realized I’ve put myself between beast and prey,” Phillips said. “These young men were beastly and these old black individuals was their prey, and I stood in between them and so they needed their pounds of flesh and they were looking at me for that.”

Again, all the evidence suggests that Phillips got it backward.

  64. Porter Lansing 2019-01-21 10:58

As I look back, the photos of the young man confronting Mr. Phillips and the photos on the Facebook page of Covington student Michael Hodge are a match. It’s not that rare for teenaged boys to have more than one facebook page, usually to attract or trick teenaged girls.

  65. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-01-21 11:03

No, Edwin, the racism in the tomahawk chop, shouting “build a wall” at a Native American man, and that disrespectful smirk are all pretty cut and dried.

  66. Jenny 2019-01-21 11:13

So they were harassed first, the Catholic boys. You do the Christian thing, and perhaps say a silent prayer for the rude demonstrators and politely move away from the situation. You don’t end up circling an elderly Vet, who feels he needed to come over and defuse the situation. Extremely poor supervision of the Catholic school here and the Chaperone who said ‘go ahead chant your school song’ was incredibly ignorant as that just riled up young testosterone, as you can see one of the boys feeling the need to strip off his shirt and beat his chest. Strange, but I suppose Catholic male hierarchy like that kind of stuff.

  67. mike from iowa 2019-01-21 11:28

If the Magat hat kid was scared, he sure didn’t look like it in any video I have seen.

And you know Drumpf will make up his own version of events and they will probably include allusions to HRC’s emaIls as the underlying cause.

  68. Daniel Buresh 2019-01-21 11:29

Cory, I’m no MAGA supporter but this doesn’t appear to be as disturbing as it was originally presented by the media.

Here is the full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-pFMZaw5f0

At about 1:12:00, you can see where the natives with drums moved in between the boys and the muslim group. It appears the kids were staying put, even going as far as sitting down prior, while others were moving in on them. Frankly, I found the muslim group to be the worst behaved.

I don’t have time to analyze every second of the video but I think it is pretty clear that these kids weren’t given a fair assessment with that short clip that the media was running with. The tomahawk chop is definitely racist but I didn’t find that clip in here so if that happened, they should be condemned for that.

What I really find interesting is the focus on those boys and not the other groups. I also think Philip’s assessment was rather odd. These kids were moved in on by others and they have no obligation to move or back down. This was crappy journalism from the start and I think you are going to see some backlash about that. Their school song chants are nothing compared to the rhetoric that is being screamed by other in that scene. If the media is going to run with the story that these kids are bad, they for sure should have run with the much more obvious bad behavior on the part of the other groups.

  69. Edwin A Arndt 2019-01-21 11:30

    Did you check CNN Cory?

  70. Steve Pearson 2019-01-21 11:30

You’ve got to be kidding me Jenny. This post should’ve been deleted as you fell prey to “fake news” just like the rest. I need to see if you have a story from Buzzfeed too Corey.

[…] get real people. Watch the whole video.

  71. Jenny 2019-01-21 11:41

Again, Extremely poor supervision by the chaperones and they are just lucky that it didn’t end violently. I am not Condoning the black protesters at all, I am absolutely aghast at the chaperones that didn’t think safety first And immediately move their group as far away from them as possible. Instead they decided to beat their chests back at them. Don’t mess with strangers when you’re in a big city, people.

  72. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-01-21 11:41

Edwin, did CNN say that the tomahawk chop clearly depicted in the video above is not a racist gesture?

Steve, there’s nothing fake here. Everything that happened, happened. I’m not going down the memory hole with you.

Indian man comes up trying to defuse a volatile situation with a song of peace, and white boys in Trump hats mock him with a tomahawk chop, “Build a wall” and intimidating shouts and smirks? Boy, talk about missing the point to reinforce colonialism and white privilege.

  74. David Newquist 2019-01-21 11:49

The video of the boys around Nathan Phillips records most of them wearing MAGA hats and T-shirts. They aren’t wearing right-to-life garb or school colors, but are dressed for a Trump rally. Nor are they counting beads or genuflecting in reverence to any higher power. They are sneering and demeaning, not honoring anyone’s life. They may have been taunted by the black men, but their apparel and their demeanor shows that they didn’t come to the Lincoln Memorial to profess peace on earth and good will to all people. But that is what Mr. Phillips was attempting to do.

It is impossible to escape the fact that these young men were projecting the purpose of a Trump neo-Nazi youth group, not to show a “responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the Catholic faith community,” as the United Conference of Catholic Bishops details their purpose.

  75. Donald Pay 2019-01-21 11:56

I’ve been hearing that the original confrontation was with the Black Hebrew Israelites, not the Black Muslims. When engaging in hate in MAGAland, is must not be necessary to go beyond skin color.

All good points and good discussion in here. Lots to discuss, but I’ll just make two points:

    1. I thought the leering stare and aggressive stance was interesting because not only was it disrespectful in modern American culture, it is doubly disrespectful in Native culture.

I am not an Indian, but I have learned a few things about the importance of passiveness / aggressiveness in those Cultures from working with Cheyenne and Arapaho leaders in some of my school work. If people would take the time to learn simple things, like showing respect with a weak handshake and lack of eye contact, or waiting for someone to finish their thought rather than interrupting or filling the silence with words, there would be a lot less misunderstandings.

Obviously these students are a long way from caring about any of that, but I think that knowledge is the off-ramp from intolerance. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, Roger, or anyone else.

    2. These kids seem to suffer from wealth and entitlement, but the fact that they are also Catholic is too emphasized, I think. Catholics on the whole have become similarly Liberal/Conservative to the general population. Obviously they have their sticking points, like on abortion, but most of the Catholics I know are pretty socially liberal and tolerant.

Those that are MAGA should probably learn a little more about America’s long history of marginalizing Catholics. Yes, many of them came here to escape persecution in Europe, but they have been a disliked/hated group by the majority protestants for most of our history.
Especially in the 1920’s when they were targets of the (then very popular in the Midwest) Ku Klux Klan. They were hated as much or more than Jews and blacks. We all have short memories, I guess.

I find it passing strange a guy can claim to hear all the assorted nasties hurled his way, but can’t remember hearing his own group say anything back.

  80. Jason 2019-01-21 12:32

Notice how Cory will not mention the Black Hebrew Israelites shouting racial comments at the students and Native Americans.

    Cory,

You got duped. Face it and move on.

I’m sure many Atlanta Braves and Florida St. Seminoles love that you think they are racist for doing the Tomahawk chop.

    What a joke.

  81. Porter Lansing 2019-01-21 12:36

Maybe the young man was attempting to count coup? He seemed intent on not flinching in the face of danger. At least, danger in the mind of a young man (far from home) surrounded by highly unfamiliar groups.

  84. Debbo 2019-01-21 14:35

So I’ve watched the full video and this is my opinion only:

Covington School needs to lose tax exemptions because they are obviously participating in political activities and politically indoctrinating the students.

The Covington parents/chaperones/teachers were entirely derelict in their duty and ought to be catching all kinds of censure from the administration and school board, or whatever runs that so called school.

The kid with his face in Mr. Phillips’ is an arrogant little sh*t who needs lessons in manners. He deserves serious consequences for his rudeness.

All the students need a big fat lecture on behavior at school activities and the school should ban all high school field trips for the 2019-2020 school year.

Mr. Phillips role was actually quite brief and successful. He diffused the tension between the groups when the MAGAts-in-training focused on him and the 2 or 3 others with him. I see no reason to blame him for anything.

The Black guy was the instigator of all of it. He was extremely provocative, a dark version of Alex Jones with the theological ridiculousness of Pat Robertson. If he was white he would be a hero of MAGAts everywhere. He’d still be a jackass, regardless of skin color.

That’s my view after watching more than an hour of video. Ugh. I think my brain is imploding now. 🤯

  85. TAG 2019-01-21 14:48

^^great summation and balanced view, Deb.

I think the Black Hebrew whacko group definitely deserves much more scrutiny then they have gotten in this incident, but none of that excuses the MAGA teens’ behavior (or their supervising adults) in any way.

The fact that the instigating group has been largely ignored by many covering this is unfortunate, and only bolsters the claims of the conspiracy theorists and “whatabout”-ists.

  86. happy camper 2019-01-21 15:40

We just can’t trust the media. As Deb describes the black guy was the instigator. He is a “Black Israelite” a hate group according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, but in this article ‘the teenagers began to attack the Black Israelites — and Phillips noted that the Black Israelites also began to say “some harsh things” in retaliation and self-defense.’ Obviously not accurate nor is saying Phillips was attacked the headline of the article. The truth is no legitimate news source has been able to verify the kids said “build the wall” after reviewing all available video. Can Deb? We know the Native Americans did say go back to Europe this is not your land and other things why were they provoking if they said they were trying to defuse? Makes no sense. In fact the “Black Israelites” said many racial remarks toward the Native Americans. Nathan Phillips credibility is quite low but we can agree the chaperons did not do their job and this was entirely avoidable.

Debbo hits it out of the ballpark with her summary Of the whole thing. Arrogance is absolutely the correct term to use with the high schooler staring down the Vet.

To Native Americans, direct eye contact like that for that long is considered extremely rude.

  88. Steve Pearson 2019-01-21 15:59

Balanced view???? Wow. Your view is such asinine nonsense wrapped in this craziness that is lefty delusion.

  89. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-01-21 16:05

Jason: irrelevant. The content presented means exactly what I said. The other protestors are red herrings and provide no excuse for the racist, disrespectful actions of the white Trump boys toward the American Indian peacemaker.

Steve, now you’re just shouting. Settle down and tell us why racist gestures like the tomahawk chop are o.k.

  90. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-01-21 16:07

Funny the Catholic diocese hasn’t rescinded its condemnation of the boys’ behavior. Darn Catholic bishop must be another asinine leftist dupe… at least in Steve’s and Jason’s world.

Why hasn’t the Catholic diocese retracted its condemnation? Surely they know the boys and the situation better than anyone in this comment section.

  91. happy camper 2019-01-21 16:11

No, what I think Steve is saying and I see is that overcoming biases is very difficult. Our innards want or even need to direct us Deb did an admirable job in many ways but a detached person would report this story so much differently than you Cory, and when provided with new information would alter his views. You slam the door and lock it twice.

  92. happy camper 2019-01-21 16:18

  93. mike from iowa 2019-01-21 16:19

Steve, you need to learn to read and comprehend what other people are saying. You aren’t here for the discussion. Just the disruption you and other trolls drag over here from yer caves.

I don’t feel one way or the other for you. You are the delusional one and you choose to be that way.

Wearing MAGA hats seems to have become the equivalent of folks who don’t recognize that the confederate flag has become a symbol of racism. It’s tone-deaf. It no longer just shows some kind of benign support for The Donald. It symbolizes support of his racist and xenophobic policies.

If you wear a MAGA hat to any kind of racial minority or immigrant group event, you are an instigator. It isn’t accidental or incidental. Just like when Neo-Nazi’s in Germany display the Confederate Battle Flag. They aren’t just fans of American History. They know exactly what that flag has come to symbolize, and they aren’t allowed to display swastikas legally anymore.

Even if the kids didn’t understand that, the adults sure as sh!t should have.

  95. Spike 2019-01-21 18:46

  96. Spike 2019-01-21 18:55

I do regret that this moment shadows the really good intentions of the Indigenous Peoples march. To cast light on the issues faced by Naive Americans in these times. America is awakening to the facts surrounding the history of the natives. And that they are still here and part of this country.

  97. Debbo 2019-01-21 18:57

“kids said ‘build the wall’ after reviewing all available video. Can Deb? We know the Native Americans did say go back to Europe this is not your land.”

I didn’t hear either of those. It was difficult to hear what the crowds were yelling. The only voice that was really that clear was the instigator and he denigrated everyone but him and his pals. As I said, he was Alex Jones/Pat Robertson in a different skin color.

  98. Debbo 2019-01-21 19:04

I agree that MAGA hats are an incitement on their own. I’m willing to bet that many, if not most of the students see those hats on adults heads daily. There are some heartless, ugly and cruel adults who revel in their racism and shamelessness. It looks like many of them send their children to Covington. Apparently Covington has no problem with any of that until they get caught on national news.

The biggest irony, the real tell about the school and the specific organization, is that they were there for an RTL event and it was all about the extremist GOP. Covington is an extremist GOP school (?) and, as a political entity, does not merit tax exempt status.

  99. mike from iowa 2019-01-21 19:41

Look around the web and you find magat hatted Drumpfists insist on holding a Native American elder to a stratospherically higher standard of veracity than the orange pathological lying potus of the United States. Disgusting and pathetic for a gentleman wanting to find common ground.

  100. Donald Pay 2019-01-21 21:25

This is probably a case of people misunderstanding each other. MAGA hats in minority communities are like Klan hoods. They are going to generate a reaction. I suppose those high school kids might not understand that, and some minorities on the scene might have responded without understanding that these are dumb kids, not the Klan.

  101. Debbo 2019-01-21 22:06

Smirky W (for white) Racist claims he did not understand what Nathan Phillips was singing. True and proof the white privileged brat hasn’t assimilated to Indian country and must therefore be deported.

Like Don says wearing a Magat hat and smirking in the eyes of a POC is clearly a form of racism. That kid knew exactly what he was doing and then cries out he is the victim.

  104. Porter Lansing 2019-01-22 08:52

I listened to a Glenn Beck interview with one of the chaperones. She’s so lawyered up that she’s lying, denying and crucifying the essence of truth. “I didn’t see any tomahawk chops. The Indian got in one of the boy’s faces. Our group was singled out because of our white race. I was at the rear on the left and was guarding our perimeter.” Beck called the boy’s group “Little Martin Luther Kings”. There you have it. Tribalism.

  105. Steve Pearson 2019-01-22 09:08

I find it amazing that just because MAGA hats are Trump supporters it automatically means you can’t wear them in your eyes. It’s not a Klan hood…thanks “Alyssa.” Get real people. And have you watched the whole hour plus video Corey??? Because your willingness to still stand by your story makes me think you have not.

You are so full of your blinded with your opinion that the statements from others here about all of you against anything on the other side is true. You dismiss it as hate or at a minimum wrong. You won’t even hear another side.

  106. Steve Pearson 2019-01-22 09:11

Also, the Native American first confronted a female in the group first. She ended up in tears so the people moved on to a different person because that wouldn’t have played well to their end game.

All of you make assumptions on Sandman but you should really check yourself. His “smile” was clearly nerves. He did nothing wrong.

And debbo tying the black group into a white supremacy tie in and Trump tie in is asinine. The group is hateful. Leave it at that.

On a lighter note, Mr Phillips will have a meeting with Cov-Cath racist brats after turning down a request from some restaurant owner.

Update 11:17 a.m.: Nathan Phillips has changed his mind on meeting with CovCath students.

He’s offering to travel as a delegate representing the international coalition behind the Indigenous Peoples March to Covington Catholic High School in and have a dialogue about cultural appropriation, racism and the importance of listening to and respecting diverse cultures, he said in a news release.

“Race relations in this country and around the world have reached a boiling point,” said Phillips. “It is sad that on the weekend of a holiday when we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., racial hostility occurred on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where King gave his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.”

  119. bearcreekbat 2019-01-22 11:49

Pearson’s comment about MAGA hats has some merit and only one small factual misstatement.

For now people in the US have a 1st Amendment right to wear any type of clothing they feel advertises their values and morality. We can wear Nazi helments, Klan hats and robes, swastikas, f*ck you tattoos, or other external accrutements evidencing our white supremacy or hatred or fear of others, including people of different religions, races and nationalities. After all, it is important for us to be able to openly reveal our values, morals and what we believe in. Also, it is helpful for the world to see such objective evidence of what an individual believes in, as this helps recognize know who displays values and morals to trust and respect and who might be a danger to others of different religions, races or nationalities.

MAGA hats are a classic example of an external posting of morals and values that would be protected by the 1st Amendment. Although I wouldn’t wear one because it contradicts my values, I would never tell Pearson that the 1st Amendment does not protect his choice to wear his MAGA hat. He and the students here have the 1st Amendment right to tell the world they ares either hate filled racists or merely morer victims of another Donald Trump scam (think Trump University).

The only real flaw I noticed in Pearson’s post is that seem to be no comments that I saw on DPLS telling him that he, nor the students, could not or should not wear a MAGA cap.

  120. Debbo 2019-01-22 11:52

Ahh. I appreciate a little levity Porter. If my hands were less arthritic I’d join in. Can I name a substitute puncher? The Rock is my favorite wrestler, all time and I’ve been watching since the Verne Gagne era. lol As far as Mr. Phillips going to meet with folks at Cov/Catholic, it’s a nice gesture on his part. Just what you’d expect from a certified warrior. Although, most of us (who grew up around kids in Catholic school know from experience), you don’t judge those kids by how they act when the Priest is watching. It’s how they act, bully the weak and treat women when they think no ones watching that’s the true tell.

Covington Catholic High School is closed today due to threats from numerous and undisclosed sources.
From what I am hearing from the moccasin telegraph Nathan Phillips and William Underbaggage of the Lakota Nation are planning a trip to the school. It is likely other Indians and groups may join them on the trip.

Are you suggesting that Steve Parson’s repeatedly misspells Cory’s name intentionally?

  125. Jason from SD [the one who usually defends Trumpism at all costs —CAH] 2019-01-22 12:35

Cory and most democrats get duped by a twitter user from Brazil.

The NYT and every other newspaper will get sued for libel if they don’t retract.

BCB’s values don’t want America to be great again.

Democrats think wearing a hat makes people racist. LOL.

Black Muslims threaten kids and Native Americans so Democrats start to threaten kids.

Most of the democrats on DFP must agree with the Black Muslims threatening kids and Native Americans.

    Philips is a paid activist.

Did I leave anything out of the factual summary?

  126. mike from iowa 2019-01-22 12:39

Roger, Steev can’t be that stoopid not to do it deliberately, can he?

  127. Porter Lansing 2019-01-22 12:42

Steve Pierson from Brandon? That’s him.

  128. Roger Cornelius 2019-01-22 12:45

C’mon mikey from iowa, you know as well as I do that the Trumpanzees know no bounds when it comes to stoopid. It is like they have a monopoly on it or something.

Oscar nominations came out today, just as I’m watching The Vice. I could never picture myself watching any more about Dick Cheney than I had too. Cheney’s on the face punching list, too. I’m at the part where Cheney dog walks Geo. W through Washington and takes over the USA, with Antonin Scalia. Cheney says to himself, “This guy will do anything to impress his Dad.”

  130. Donald Pay 2019-01-22 13:25

Bear’s comment above is right. Of course, if you’re black, or Indian, or Mexican teen or adult and you are walking through a white or even your own neighborhood in a hoody or you are AOC and wearing something the righty fashion police don’t approve, then your constitutional rights don’t matter.

Still, MAGA hats are the new outfit of the modern day Klan. I would never ban them because I want to know who the racists thugs are.

  131. Porter Lansing 2019-01-22 13:46

The Market Won’t Lie? Today’s MAGA hat prices.
Official Donald Trump Make America Great Again Hat – Red $25
The Walmart knockoff hat – Red $9.00
    E-Bay used – Red $1.99
These items are predicted to hold their collector’s value every bit as much as Beanie-Babies (none)

  132. Donald Pay 2019-01-22 15:19

Goodwill has had a few MAGA hats donated. The hats are poor qualify, so at their price of $4.99, I’ve been able to resist them. However, at some point I will buy one and alter the “Make America Great Again” logo by adding “Dump Trump.” It’s postmodern art at its best.

  133. Roger Cornelius 2019-01-22 17:20

It is a wingnut conspiracy with McConnell’s top aid’s PR firm hitched up with Smirky McRacistface’s family running propaganda. Basketball vid claims blackout isn’t about race-at least in 2015 when the claim was made. This is 4 years later and things have changed. In the video of Cov-Cath cheer squad you can clearly see some students at Lincoln Mem doing tomahawk chops in the direction of Mr Phillips.

  137. happy camper 2019-01-22 18:57

At 6:55 the Native American in the red cap says: White people go back to Europe this is not your land followed by profanities, then at 7:33 Nick Sandmann motions to the other kid to stop arguing when he’s saying everyone came from Africa. Numerous times the kids say “what is happening.” More things are coming out gonna wait until all can be known it’s for sure more complicated than initially thought. This story has really struck a nerve across the country.

For all the whataboutism and bothsidesism, I havne’t heard anyone yet explain how the tomahawk chop didn’t happen or isn’t racist.

I think the facts as reported Saturday still stand on their own.

  139. jerry 2019-01-22 19:16

The reason this has struck a nerve is because of who is pushing it. Mitch McConnell’s pr outfit. Nothing changes the look on the kid’s face. Nothing. We have all seen that look before. Arrogant little racist turd.

The government is still shut down. No pesos from Mexico, just the same divide.

  140. happy camper 2019-01-22 19:42

No, the facts don’t stand on their own Cory. Reason Magazine’s second article “If You Still Think Nick Sandmann’s Smile Is Proof of Racism, You’re Seeing What You Want to See” is quite compelling. Again I am going to wait it all out, but we’re finding Nathan Phillips is not a Vietnam Veteran. Sometimes he described himself as a Vietnam Times Veteran other times he directly misrepresented himself, and other things that should have been fact-checked before the media ran with the story, including getting the other side and trying to understand the full dynamics which still aren’t known, but it’s unforgivable reporting that the taunting from the Black Israelites was not included in the story. You should be willing to challenge your biases please read the article.

It’s a requisite at an impasse like this to know where someone sits before you can determine where they stand and why. I trust you to tell the truth, as you always try to do, Happy. You’re no Jason or Ryan or Pearson or Troy Jones. You don’t try to mislead and misdirect. That said, “Did you attend Catholic school, Happy?”

  143. happy camper 2019-01-22 20:03

No, Methodist, and probably too militant of atheist now. To me that means we have to try to see what’s true as I said once I think biases are the most dangerous things we’ve got floating around our heads. I do feel compelled to challenge them because I really think they’re the enemy, of how we see each other, how we see ourselves and way to easily lead us down the wrong path.

  144. Porter Lansing 2019-01-22 20:27

Thank you, sir. Not to be continually contrary but some biases save our lives, every day. They come in good and they come in bad. But, to agree with you, unexamined biased are mostly bad and highly dangerous.

  145. Debbo 2019-01-22 22:02

This heavily satirical article comes from The Root. It’s chiefly a history lesson that aims to show how standards continue to differ for “white boys’ ” actions compared to POC. It highlights the egregious double standard at work.

    https://goo.gl/EYxLt2

We are fools to pretend that this double standard is not at work in the “Covington white boys” incident too. As HC has stated, there are inner biases at work in all of us. The one that is overly generous to “white boys” has been very kind to them throughout the entire history of the US.

  146. jerry 2019-01-22 22:07

Washington post on Marine Vietnam Era Nathan Phillips
“Phillips, an Omaha tribe elder and Marine veteran who lives in Michigan, has long been active in the indigenous rights movement.

A co-founder of the Native Youth Alliance cultural and education group, he goes to Arlington National Cemetery every Veterans Day with a peace pipe to pay tribute to Native Americans who served in the U.S. military.

“My job has always been taking care of the fire, to keep the prayers going,” Phillips said.

In that role, he has encountered anti-Native American sentiment before: In 2015, he was verbally attacked by a group of Eastern Michigan University students who were dressed as Native Americans during a themed party near the town of Ypsilanti, according to news reports.

Phillips had approached the group, informing them that their celebration was racially offensive, a local Fox News station reported. One of the students threw a beer can at him, Phillips told the news outlet.

But the Friday incident, combined with the ensuing attention from media outlets scrambling to get his story, left him shaken.

“I’m still trying to process what happened,” Phillips said. “I’m feeling a little bit overwhelmed.”

He said he hopes the teens will find a lesson in all of the negative attention generated by the videos.

“That energy could be turned into feeding the people, cleaning up our communities and figuring out what else we can do,” Phillips said. “We need the young people to be doing that instead of saying, ‘These guys are our enemies.’ ”

Correction: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said that Native American activist Nathan Phillips fought in the Vietnam War. Phillips said he served in the U.S. Marines but was never deployed to Vietnam.

So there ya go. The little scamp white boy is a racist that was taught that from his Catholic School and his mam and pap.

  147. jerry 2019-01-22 22:19

The Catholic School is a haven for hate, from the Bishop on down the line. Fits right into the chatter on the subject here. This is from a Pastor, so go ahead trumpists, get with it.

    “PASTOR MARSHALL JOLLY
    ON COVINGTON CATHOLIC CULTURE

I’ve seen a lot of chatter about the disgraceful incident involving students from Covington Catholic High School and an Indigenous American and Veteran in Washington, DC this weekend. This morning, as news of the “full video” began to break, people started hedging, saying that there were “multiple perspectives.” Here’s my perspective.

I served an Episcopal parish in Northern Kentucky, approximately 15 minutes from Covington Catholic High School. It’s a prestigious all-male school with a reputation for strong academics and strong athletics. You can learn that much from the website.

What you won’t learn from the website is that there is a sinister pattern of similar behavior within the Diocese. While the Bishop there concerns himself with bizarre pronouncements (such as admonishing the faithful not to hold hands during the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer) and quashing “unorthodox hymns” that are otherwise approved for use in the Catholic church, he also has created a culture that is not only anti-LGBT, but also actively seeking out teachers and other administrators who might even hold sympathetic views toward people who are LGBT.

As a (retired) soccer referee, I dreaded officiating matches where Covington Catholic was involved. The fans were always among the rudest, most disrespectful, and mean-spirited that I’ve encountered–and I’ve refereed for a long time at almost every level of the game! Student after student has come forward over the years to try and shed light on the abuses that not just LGBT students faced, but students of color. Racial epithets and slurs were commonplace in the halls.

My point is that what we’re seeing on the (many) videos circulating should not come as a shock. It is a continuation of a long and disgusting pattern of toxicity and abuse that has been allowed and even encouraged at all levels of the school and, as far as I can tell, from the diocese.

While we might be concerning ourselves with “who moved first” or “who moved toward whom” in the video, I encourage you to reflect on this: notice the posture and demeanor of the young man. There is a troubling display of xenophobia embedded here. It’s the kind that says that white bodies (read: white, cis, straight, male bodies) can be anywhere they choose at any time, but that non-white bodies (read: non-cis, straight, male bodies) must first seek permission to exist outside of their “place.” This is a window into a perverse system that thrives on toxic, fragile masculinity embedded with xenophobia. And it’s not pretty. Let those who have ears to hear, listen.”

Those in the know, know what racism and privilege are. Think of the lying liar Brett Kavanaugh and you can see the same in this brats smug mug.

  148. Roger Cornelius 2019-01-22 23:00

When all is said and done about this story there will remain some constants.
Does Nathan Phillips military career change the fact that the kids from a Catholic School were wearing the new red hood of the KKK? By the way, if you wear a RED HAT, it is easy to spell HATRED.
Does Nathan Phillips military career change the sneer on Sandman’s face to a smile?
Does Nathan Phillips military career change the fact these boys were taunting the Indian group with their yelling and doing the Tomahawk Chop?
Does it really matter who started what if the result ends up being bigotry?
Donald Trump has invited these junior KKK members to the White House, this alone should tell us what kind of students these are.

  149. Debbo 2019-01-23 00:02

That school and attitude makes me sick. That the Bigoted Blowhard invites racist scum into the WH and that he himself is racist scum is even worse.

  152. Eugene Smith 2019-01-23 01:02

The Washington Post made a major correction: “Nathan Phillips served in the Marines but was NEVER deployed in Vietnam.” Nathan Phillips told CNN during the interview “and I’m a Vietnam veteran”. A LIE! With the name “Nathan Phillips” a “White Man’s Name”, Nathan should be the one to “go back to Europe” and is probably a phony “Native American” as well.

  153. mike from iowa 2019-01-23 07:16

Hell’s bells, Happy, it wasn’t just the smirk, it was the Magat hat- the very symbol of racial hatred that leads me to believe Sandman is a racist and knew exactly the effect he was creating by facing off with an indigenous person.

As for you, you seem to be deeply hurt by this story for some reason. Were you ever traumatized by a Native American beating a drum and singing in your face? I seem to be missing something about you.

  154. Steve Pearson 2019-01-23 09:13

Not “assume” there Mike. You know what happens when you assume right?

    And how about this?

    Ilhan Omar

    @IlhanMN

-The boys were protesting a woman’s right to choose & yelled “it’s not rape if you enjoy it”
-They were taunting 5 Black men before they surrounded Phillips and led racist chants
-Sandmann’s family hired a right wing PR firm to write his non-apology 🤦🏽‍♀️https://rewire.news/article/2019/01/22/white-washing-white-supremacy-media-rushes-to-excuse-covington-catholic-students/ …

  155. Steve Pearson 2019-01-23 09:18

But good news for all of you. AOC says the world is ending in 12 years so we can all just quit complaining about the other side and just throw a party right>?

  156. Porter Lansing 2019-01-23 09:33

AOC (I like the ring of that. Like JFK or RFK or FDR. You, know, winners.) referenced the 2018 UN “Special Report on Global warming of 1.5ºC,” released in October 2018. It mentions the year 2030 — twelve years from now — as the point of no return, if we keep on our current path. It’s mentioned 35 times in the report in varying applications.
*Pearson is the kind of bloke who can empty out a party just by the mention that he might show up. Once again, continual use of the term “all of you” denotes a person who doesn’t feel connected to normal society. A serial problem in it’s infancy? Eyes on this guy, Sioux Falls.

  157. Steve Pearson 2019-01-23 09:49

I don’t live in Brandon either.

  158. Steve Pearson 2019-01-23 09:50

I like how you ignored the MN rep comment.

  159. Steve Pearson 2019-01-23 10:01

And have any of you kept up on the actual full story of this now?

Nathan Phillips approached the boy and got into his face. Prior to that he did that to a girl HS student and she broke down crying. Funny how he moved on. He is NOT a Vietnam Vet but a “Vietnam Era” Vet. He went AWOL 3 times in his service.

Washington DC Catholic Basilica had a run in with Phillips and others recently as they tried to enter and disrupt a church service. Hmmmm, you’re probably all okay with that I’m sure. Hate is okay when it’s against Christianity right?

The media continues it’s attack on the kids and Catholic school. Ironic how all of you are hypocrites considering I’ve seen this countless times over the last few years with your side of the aisle. It seems that people who are on the right are considered a MOB if they protest peacefully. And all of you continue to disregard the real aggression at this day.

  160. Steve Pearson 2019-01-23 10:04

I would be willing to be my retirement that the world doesn’t end in 12 years OR that we are in a position that is irreversible and doom is coming to our planet.

  161. o 2019-01-23 11:33

What I saw was bro-culture and bro-privilege from a bro-mob. I am sure this incident will be replayed for one of these young men, 30 years from now, at their Supreme Court judge confirmation hearing.

  162. Steve Pearson 2019-01-23 11:45

It appears that Pearson may be hallucinating again. Just as no one here posted any objection to him or anyone else wearing a MAGA hat that warns people about the danger that the wearer might commit racist or violent actions targeting minorities or innocent people to make MAGA political points, I saw no comment declaring that MAGA hat wearing people “have no right to be anywhere.”

Indeed, the more these dangerous folks reveal themselves and are out in the open, the greater chance law enforcement has to prevent tragedy if they go off the deep end.

  166. o 2019-01-23 12:16

Steve, really? Don’t focus on the one young man, look at the crowd of young men. You really do not see an entitlement to jump into a situation as loudly and “bro-ishly” as possible?

I do have disdain for some — not because “they are on the right” but because they show a lack of respect, if not complete sneering disdain, for others. The MAGA hats, the tomahawk chops, the “Build the wall.” chants . . . all really are antagonistic to the man they were confronting. Beyond some “right” distinction, there seems to be toxic masculinity on display from a white-privileged crowd.

This is not about a “right to be” but about a common decency in that presence.

  167. jerry 2019-01-23 12:19

Pearson and the goons not only condone racism, they also condone sexism. Why else were those red hats there in the first place?

  168. Donald Pay 2019-01-23 12:35

As usual, Bear brings some commonsense to this discussion. Wearing a red MAGA hat just makes the racists more visible. I can discount about everything they have to say just by the fact that they are wearing that red piece of fabric on their head.

I’ve never understood the righties’ need to identify with a uniform. The MAGA hat is the Nazi swastika or Klan hat for our times. As long as the wearers don’t try to use that hat along with violence and harassment, I’ll just snicker at their need to dress like fools. If they start becoming intimidating and violent, as that gang of high school kids almost did, then it seems the fascism goes beyond First Amendment stage.

Hats like that are banned in most public high schools. It would be considered a gang hat.

  169. o 2019-01-23 12:37

BTW, when was America “great” for Native Americans? Just trying to get MAGA into cultural perspective.

  170. Steve Pearson 2019-01-23 12:37

  178. bearcreekbat 2019-01-23 13:12

Jason, I certainly did not intend to imply that most people who wear MAGA caps are racists or dangerous. I simply observed that most racists and dangerous people wear MAGA hats, just as they support Trump and his policies that are designed to harm folks seeking safety, freedom and economic opportunity in the U.S. (I still can’t figure out how or when those became negative values and goals in the mind of wall supporters).

  179. o 2019-01-23 13:17

Jason, when “THEY” stopped killing each other over land? How about when “WE” stopped killing them over land?

I am just trying to put MAGA into a cultural context for Native Americans – when was that great era the wearers of the red caps point to for our Native friends?

Cory, your story has been dismantled. Does a “journalist” who expects protections follow up and apologize for false reporting, or are you just a propagandist worthy of none?

Bishop apologizes to CovCath families: “We apologize to anyone who has been offended in any way by either of our statements which were made with good will based on the information we had,” wrote the Most Rev. Roger Foys. “We should not have allowed ourselves to be bullied and pressured into making a statement prematurely, and we take full responsibility for it.

“I especially apologize to Nicholas Sandmann and his family as well as to all CovCath families who have felt abandoned during this ordeal.”

Sandmann’s comments to the media were scripted by a wrong-wing PR firm. (thanks Debbo) In short he is a phony wingnut claiming victimhood for his actions.

  187. Porter Lansing 2019-01-26 09:17

Happy Camper – Are you saying that a Catholic Bishop commenting on the conduct of a catholic parishioner has validity when he either condemns or praises? Bishops hide crimes from the police. Bishops (and Senators like Schoenbeck and lobbyists like grudznick) help pedophile priests get statutes of limitations on their crimes to avoid penalty. The Catholic Church is an ongoing crime in progress and South Dakota legislature is a complicit partner in continued illegal activity.

No, I’m saying this story has been debunked Phillips claimed to have been a Vietman Vet who served in theater as a Recon Ranger and got an honorable discharge. In fact he was a refrigerator repairman who never left the country, had three AWOLs and got a general discharge after serving time in prison. He has no credibility. Cory said there was nothing fake about the story and the Catholic diocese hadn’t rescinded its condemnation. There is overwhelming evidence to the contrary of the original story with no follow up by DFP but Cory thinks he deserves journalist protections. No, not without journalist integrity.

  189. Porter Lansing 2019-01-26 11:09

You’re the one without integrity. You posted one sentence about Cory and several sentences and a link about what a Bishop said, claiming that as evidence that the story is wrong.
Now, go back to Cory’s post and point out specifically what Cory said that’s wrong. Not, what others said that turned out to be questionable but specifically what Cory said that’s wrong.

  190. jerry 2019-01-26 11:20

Vietnam era vet, from Indian Country Today:

Note: This article has been adjusted from its original version to show that Nathan Phillips was a Vietnam-era veteran and that he was spit on while in uniform as opposed to when he was returning from combat.

Note: Nathan Phillips did not serve in the Vietnam war. We have adjusted accordingly, this article is from 2008.”

BTW, a general discharge still means you qualify for all benefits with the exception of the GI Montgomery Bill.

“A general discharge under honorable conditions means that your service was satisfactory, but did not deserve the highest level of discharge for performance and conduct. Many veterans with this type of discharge may have engaged in minor misconduct. While a discharge under honorable conditions may not be what a veteran wants on his or her resume, it qualifies for VA health care, TRICARE’s Continued Health Care Benefit Program (military health insurance), VA disability compensation, VA pension, VA home loans, and all other veterans benefits except for educational benefits under the Montgomery or Post-9/11 GI Bill. (For the Montgomery GI Bill program or Post-9/11 GI Bill program, you need an honorable discharge.)

That Bishop still hates you and your’s happycamper. Dude hates gays. Just because you’re white doesn’t exclude you from his hatred of you. Being gay trumps being white. The Bishop knows that you’ll always be a white boy, but hates you because he thinks you can change to being like him, whatever that may be.

  191. happy camper 2019-01-26 11:43

The story is not how Catholics feel about me, it’s if Phillips was mistreated and if he told the truth. Cory called the boys behavior appalling and posted Phillips account of events, both of which have been debunked by longer videos. Jerry can’t change Phillips blatantly lied about his service (on video), Phillips then had the nerve to call Nick Sandmann insincere. Nathan Phillips is a provocateur who the following day tried to disrupt a Catholic mass. It’s an embarrassing story of rushing to judgment and reflects our culture war.

  192. jerry 2019-01-26 11:49

Indeed it is, it is that absolute core of the argument. Your whiteness blinds you to your gayness.

  193. Porter Lansing 2019-01-26 11:55

WRong … Cory correctly called the boy’s behavior appalling. I was personally appalled as were the majority who saw the kid disrespect the Indian elder. Cory posting Phillip’s account of events doesn’t mean Cory is responsible for the truth or consequences of Phillip’s account of events. (e.g. – If I post a statement from Donald Trump, that doesn’t mean I’m responsible if it’s total bull sh*t.) Then your post goes into what Jerry and Phillips said and your opinions of yourself. I still see NO example of specifically where Cory was wrong. Conclusion … you’re being hysterical without validity.

  194. happy camper 2019-01-26 12:03

Almost everyone was appalled until they saw the more complete context from unedited video. This is a blog of opinion and propaganda. Not news. No standards no protections.

Happy disagrees, we get that. Does not mean you are right. You don’t get your way so Cory’s the bad guy. Who are you- a Trump family member?

  196. mike from iowa 2019-01-26 12:15

What ever Phillips had to say does not change the behavior of the Magat hat wearing privileged white boy with the smirk on his face.

  197. jerry 2019-01-26 12:18

“Magat hat” spits coffee, good one. Nancy Pelosi swatted that big fly away like we knew she would. Beaten up by a woman! gwuwhahahaa

  198. Porter Lansing 2019-01-26 12:35

Happy … buddy. Calm down, Paco. Cory said nothing wrong or deceitful. Your impression of the article is what’s in question. The article impressed on you that the truth is different from what the article impressed on you. (Here comes the crux of the biscuit.) Happy, your impression of Cory’s article is tainted by your bias. Ta Dah. As you said, bias is the most dangerous thing in the world, today. Examine what you’ve said, through the filter of a different bias and you’ll come to a different conclusion … probably. Or, you’ll just be so stubborn that you’ll dwell on the wrong side of history a while longer.

To you the MAGA hats represent something that it doesn’t to those who wear the hats. It’s not a KKK uniform. Song in his heart give me a break he knew exactly what he was doing: Trying to stir up trouble and get it on camera he succeeded and we all got taken for a ride.

    https://www.vox.com/2017/6/15/18192835/maga-hats-preteens-middle-schoolers

They may have good reason not to: The hats are so divisive in part because they are such effective symbols — named 2016’s Symbol of the Year, in fact, by Stanford’s Symbolic Systems program for their widespread recognition and “effective distillation” of Trump’s campaign. For such a seemingly small accessory, it’s freighted, for many, with the emotional impact of the president’s entire campaign and term so far: every comment he’s made about Mexicans, women, or immigrants, the Muslim ban, the threats against bodily autonomy and affordable health care.

  201. bearcreekbat 2019-01-26 13:50

happy, I encourage you to read the link describing what Bishop Stowe wrote. He seems to have a pretty clear picture of what adults understand about the meaning of the MAGA hat. To assert some other significance to the hat is, in effect, burying your head in the sand.

I will grant you this, perhaps young minds do not understand that the hat stands for anti-life goals. Unfortunately I can describe just such an personal experience from my childhood.

When I was around 11 or 12 years old I somehow acquired a Nazi military helmet, which seemed so cool as a war memento since I was fascinated by all things military at that age. I even had toy soldiers that I would play with by engaging them in battles for my entertainment. I lived in a Jewish neighborhood in suburban Minneapolis and most of my friends were Jewish. I knew their parents, enjoyed Jewish cusine at their homes, and was oblivious to the holocaust and other atrocities committed by the Nazis. One Halloween I dressed in an army style jacket and wore the Nazi helmet as my costume. I got a lot of strange looks that I didn’t understand at the time. Later, when it dawned on me what my costume stood for I was mortified. To this day I still shoulder guilt for my young stupidity.

Thus, I can accept your argument that the MAGA hat might mean something different to naive children, such as those linked by mfi. Just as with my Nazi war helmet, I see no excuse, however, for any adult to deny what that hat stands for, namely, fear and hatred of people from south of our border, muslims, people of color, and a desire to demean, marginalize, and exclude others.

  202. Debbo 2019-01-26 14:16

When the kid stood in front of Mr. Phillips with that arrogant smirk on his face, he knew nothing of the elder’s life, background, honesty, etc. The only thing relevant to him was that he was a young white boy, and therefore, in his mind, as he has been so carefully taught, he was superior to the lowly American Indian. He didn’t need to say or do anything, just stand there unmoving, with a GWB-ish smirk.

The people who recognize racism instantly, on sight, are those who’ve faced it all their lives. It’s not you privileged white males in the DFP comment section. It’s not even the white women, though we’re more likely to. It’s the POC who are saying over and over, that arrogant little **** is racist down to his toes. I believe the POC. They know on a visceral, cellular level. I absolutely and fully believe the POC.

  203. Debbo 2019-01-26 14:19

BCB, the Jewish people were very kind to you when you dressed as a Nazi. Yes, it was a colossal, but ignorant blunder. Mortifying. It would stick in my memory too.

“I see no excuse, however, for any adult to deny what that hat stands for, namely, fear and hatred of people from south of our border, muslims, people of color, and a desire to demean, marginalize, and exclude others.”

That, BCB, is an outrageous statement. You want to take something, define it in your terms, then say anyone who wears that article of clothing is guilty of your predetermined crimes. Ridiculous! It reminds me of a gay group in collge who asked everyone who is gay to wear blue jeans and a white t-shirt on Friday. This is a true story. Well, there was backlash because who doesn’t wear bluejeans and white t-shirts it was meaningless and it’s highly discriminatory of you. You have no idea what values those people have the left continues to paint with the only thing they know how to use: a paint sprayer. The Detroit Free Press got an earful when they ran a story on MAGA hats: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2019/01/25/trump-maga-hats-racist-make-america-great-again/2677458002/

  206. bearcreekbat 2019-01-26 14:58

happy, you are reading a bit much into my comment. I don’t recall accusing anyone of being “guilty of [my] predetermined crimes.” I don’t even recall asserting that racsim is a “crime,” nor even a negative characteristic. Indeed, some folks probably get joy out of life by promugating hatred, and we know many folks make a ton of money by doing so. Racism is a fact of life and if you think it is, or should be, a crime, that is your opinion.

I checked out your link and would conclude that it provides support for my observation about the meaning of MAGA hats to most adults. Comments by MAGA hat supporters on your link include:

the inferior person that wants privilege based on their own color of skin, the takers, the non-doers, the lazy, the ones who feel they are owed something.

    you liberal loonies couldn’t stand

The hateful intolerant left will stop at nothing. . . . These people are SICK.

respect the rights of free speech and stop trying to shout people into silence.

media is working overtime to create a narrative out of whole cloth. Only the person who wants to see racism in a stupid hat will see it. This campaign to vilify the Trump campaign slogan

    pride in being an American

There are far worse things printed on shirts, posters, truck-back windows, etc., yet nobody seems to care about that.

I guess making America great again isn’t for some people. They’d rather have more . . . more illegal aliens, more entitlement, more race pimping …

was it racist when Bill Clinton said it? I say neither but after reading all of these comments from all the sensitive crybabies that are offended by everything.

These are quotes from pro-MAGA hat folks in your link. Take from them what you will. The objective evidence suggests, however, that they evidence xenophobia (a form of racism) and a general attitude of hate and anger toward others. I am not sure what you saw in the comments that supports your contrary theory, but the comments of folks who agree that the hats evidence these attitudes seem accurate from an objective standpoint, regardless of your stand about whether such attitudes are positive or negative. Two examples:

The hat is racist, but that’s not all it is. It means “Take America back to the dark ages, before Roe v. Wade, before consenting adults could marry whomever they loved, before we made a small step toward giving everyone health care, and a bunch of other things. And, sure, before we had an African-American president.”

When one wears that hat, one is saying they agree with Trump’s policies and behaviors. Since he has openly shown he is a racist, elitist, misogynistic, corrupt person, then wearing that hat says one agrees with those ways. It is most definitely racist. Just like if someone were to wave a Nazi flag, this hat too, shows one’s beliefs.

What is your objective evidence, happy, rather than bias toward one view, that these last two comments are in error?

  207. mike from iowa 2019-01-26 14:59

As jerry mentions, what do whites whine about when they see a black kid with a hoodie? They automatically peg the kid as a thug and criminal.

To a large extent people believe what they want to believe, even if they watch the extended video, or whatever. The important thing both sides are trying their darndest to create and fan the flames of a culture war that’s why this story is so compelling. The leftist and main stream media ran with it without fact checking, almost everyone was outraged, then we slowly began to learn the truth. The optics were so strong. The reactions so visceral. We’re being played!!! That’s why it’s so important journalism maintain standards and propagandists with an agenda not be legitimized. For the sake of clarity, watch Phillips giving false modesty while telling a pack of lies. It’s sickening and so is making excuses for this debacle.

Heck no Deb I ain’t backing away from nothing. What you are trying to do is clear. You want to smear anybody who wears an article of clothing you don’t like because it means something to you without even knowing that person. Supposedly you don’t like prejudgements unless they suit you I guess.

  211. jerry 2019-01-26 15:34

Like Mike, the left is trying to label all Trump supporters a certain thing. So anybody who wears that hat gives you permission to think about them with a set of preconceived notions. That’s highly divisive. Highly discriminatory. Some people are just buying hats because of the stupid things the left says about people who wear the hats. We need a poem right about now, that’s what we need.

    MY HAT
    Here’s my hat.
    It holds my head,
    the thoughts I’ve had
    and the things I’ve read.

    It keeps out the wind.
    It keeps off the rain.
    It hugs my hair

    There’s me below it,

    It’s my lid.
    And I love it.

Tribal symbols. MAGA hats on the right. NFL players kneeling in protest of white supremacy on the left. Teens have always been quick to embrace clothing that adults find distasteful or uncomfortable, from visible underwear to saggy jeans. I had an upside down American flag sewn on the back of my blue jean jacket in the late 60’s, as a protest of Vietnam. The more that adults wring their hands about the potential dangers of Trumpist symbolism, the easier it is for kids to laugh about how dramatic they’re being. The more taboo the hats become, the more power they hold.

  218. happy camper 2019-01-26 16:05

I guess cars will always be a thing. I grew up with a dad who loved Fords and built race cars. One year I was the driver and let me tell you, that is a blast! I totally recommend it!

I’ve also driven a Chevy, Hondas and a Kia. This Focus is my first Ford in about 20 years. My favorite auto was a 2006 Honda CRV. Great vehicle.

BTW HC, I can take a naturally aspirated V8 apart down to the bare block, make some changes and reassemble it to go significantly faster. I can build a chassis too. Don’t even change oil any more. Don’t have the facilities and it’s too much work.

Growing up on a farm, working with animals and farm equipment, in a racing family, 4 of my 5 sibs know how to do lots of stuff. We’re a smart family, excellent genes. Lucky us.

  223. Porter Lansing 2019-01-26 16:20

There was an odd site in the late 60’s in parts of SD. Prof. Newquist might remember it. High school boys wearing blue jean jackets turned inside out. They were as much of a protest symbol as the reason why they were being worn. Because blue jean jackets with flags sewn on the back (from the film “Easy Rider”, which was banned in Watertown, BTW) weren’t allowed on school property. An inside out jacket demonstrated more of the “You eff’s can send me to Vietnam to die but you can’t tell me what to think!” than the desecration of the American flag, itself. [Of course, as it is with the NFL players, what we were protesting was the real desecration of the American flag.]

  224. Porter Lansing 2019-01-26 16:27

FYI … teenaged boys wearing MAGA hats isn’t a support of racism. It’s a protest against Political Correctness.

  225. jerry 2019-01-26 16:56

The point of indigenous erasure should not be lost in all of this. After all, the land we all walk upon was stolen land. The more white racism is condoned by kids and their parents, the more we miss the real issue of what it all is, pure racism.

“As soon as the jarring video made international news, an organized media campaign quickly spun the story — turning the jeering Covington Catholic High School students into victims. And concern from both liberal and conservative media outlets shifted from confronting the issue of Indigenous erasure — why were Native people marching in D.C. in the first place? — to defending the innocence of white youth.””

Indeed, we must protect our precious little white faces so they can continue to wear the red hats and the black face while pretending innocence to the racial hatred they are spewing.

The problem here Deb is that Nathan Phillips has lost his credibility for numerous reasons. He walked up to Nick Sandmann and bounded the drum in his face. Sandmann is guilty of not moving and looking uncomfortable neither of which is a crime. The smirking doesn’t look like smirking in the longer video when the context is understood. The next day when he tried to go into a Catholic mass he was doing what an activist does for political reasons. I believe the white boys now!!! Not that they are completely off the hook some of what they did was stupid, some of what they did looks slightly racist, the tomahawk moves, but in the longer narrative the Black Israelites look the worse, then Nathan Phillips and those with him antagonizing the youth, then the youth. I waited to collect more information as I said I would, the story seems to be coming to a close, so without new information coming to light, I’ve made my decision.

Welcome, Eugene. You seem very insightful. Tell us more, sir.

  231. bearcreekbat 2019-01-26 18:28

happy is being a bit obtuse with the assertion “You want to smear anybody who wears an article of clothing you don’t like because it means something to you without even knowing that person.” He claims that a MAGA conveys no message nor anything about the person wearing it.

First, if I am not mistaken there is a huge market for hats, jackets, t-shirts and other items of clothing with political and non-political messages. Recall, for example, clothing we have seen Trumpists wear at rallys with obscenities supporting Trump or demeaning Hillary.

    https://www.thecut.com/2016/10/the-most-misogynistic-things-people-wore-to-trump-rallies.html

For happy to suggest that such clothing says nothing about the wearer seems a slap in the face of the people who buy and wear it in an effort to publicly announce their views. By asserting the clothing has no meaning and that people who think otherwise are somehow biased or bigoted, happy denies the wearer the ability to use such clothing to tell the public exactly who they are and what they believe

Second, a point that happy seems to have overlooked is that the SCOTUS has repeatedly ruled that the 1st and 14th Amendments restrict the government from punishing people that express their viewpoints with the very means denied by happy – their clothing. Such rulings would be nonsensical if happy’s position that what someone wears says nothing about them or their views had any validity.

In Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Community School Dist., 393 U. S. 503(1969), the Court ruled in favor of young people about the same age as the young people wearing MAGA hats here. Three public school pupils in Des Moines, Iowa, were suspended from school for wearing black armbands to protest the Government’s policy in Vietnam. In ruling the Court observed, ” the wearing of armbands . . . was closely akin to “pure speech” which, we have repeatedly held, is entitled to comprehensive protection under the First Amendment.” Id. at 505-506.

Likewise, in Cohen v. California, 403 U.S. 15 (1971), the Court upheld Cohen’s right to wear a jacket with language protesting the Vietnam war.

It looks like happy’s desires have outweighed his objective evaluation of the meaning of MAGA hats and the views intended to be expressed by wearing those hats. Indeed, he has offered no evidence that this hat expresses support for a single non-Trump viewpoint. As quoted above from happy’s own link, “When one wears that hat, one is saying they agree with Trump’s policies and behaviors. Since he has openly shown he is a racist, elitist, misogynistic, corrupt person, then wearing that hat says one agrees with those ways.”

And as an aside, I attended the BH Stock Show in Rapid this afternoon along with thousands of people. With this thread in mind, I looked for MAGA hats. I saw a whole lot of caps, but nary a MAGA cap. It renewed my faith a bit in our local community.

  232. happy camper 2019-01-26 18:48

Obtuse sure is a popular word today. Yes, I was minimizing for effect. Of course the hat is usually worn for more than protective clothing but we still don’t know what it means to other people. You really only know what it means to you so go talk to people other than “your own crowd.” Maybe they will surprise you I’m sticking with my earlier statement all these articles saying MAGA hats mean this, that all these people think this, they have all these traits simply because they wear that hat is ridiculous. Again it’s just a way of allowing yourself to hate a group of people you don’t even know by an identifiable garment you only assume exists. The hat does not make a person into a Brownshirt. A long time ago this blog talked about Blue Eyes versus Brown Eyes child experiment be very careful about the labeling you seem so anxious to make. Give people a chance, talk to them and really listen.

  233. mike from iowa 2019-01-26 19:19

You got yourself firmly entrenched on this issue. It is supposed to get very cold for a few days. Keep your bridges burning to stay warm.

  234. bearcreekbat 2019-01-26 19:27

happy, these kids were quite similar to the Tinker kids – in both cases there was a group of teens wearing identical articles of clothing. In Tinker the balck arm bands were designed to convey a specific message. And in this case the hats were designed by the maker to convey a specific message. To deny that message is indeed a denial of reality. To fault those that understood the intended message goes a bit beyond a denial of reality.

  235. Roger Cornelius 2019-01-26 19:32

A few months ago this current American president proudly told a cheering crowd of supporters that he was a “nationalist”.
It is simple to connect white nationalism to the MAGA caps and attire, at least that is way I saw it.

HC, I have no idea what you’ve experienced. Will you answer my questions?

  239. Debbo 2019-01-26 23:36

As an aside, mostly from Twitter:

“trump caved so hard they’re sending in Thai Navy Seals.”

“trump caved so hard his insurance now covers black lung.”

“trump caved so hard he’s now going to work with the West Virginia miners.”
(That one is doubly funny. Imagine him going to Work?!)

    “trump caved so hard . . . ?

  241. Roger Cornelius 2019-01-27 00:51

    Debbo,
Trump won’t admit it, but he got beat up by a girl

  242. Debbo 2019-01-27 02:56

    Roger, you’re right.

And HC won’t admit that he’s not the expert on racism. No white person is. Instead he dances around a direct answer to my 2 direct questions.

  243. mike from iowa 2019-01-27 07:28

Happy, how do we know you and Magat hat brat aren’t paid crisis actors? I still fully believe you have some stake in this mess. What is it.

  244. happy camper 2019-01-27 11:42

My stake was only to try and understand what happened and why the country all got sucked into a false narrative so easily.

    Regarding Deb’s two questions:

    – Do you believe that you are a better judge of racist behavior than people who’ve been lifelong victims of it? That would be entirely dependent on those specific individuals and their level of objectively. To say some group automatically has that understanding, automatically are experts is false. I’ve given the example of gay people I knew who believed everything was discrimination against them. Not being hired, getting fired, etc, discrimination was always the excuse for their shortcomings.
    – Why should I take your opinion as though you are the expert over theirs? You shouldn’t take my opinion but if I point something out that is relevant I hope you’ll add it to the mix. That’s the best I can hope for in your case. In my opinion you are entirely too willing to believe any accusation that comes from a minority rather than each time use an appropriate dose of skepticism. For reasons that are unknown you identify so strongly with minority causes you lack objectivity.

  245. Debbo 2019-01-27 17:58

    Thanks HC.

I believe POC are better at recognizing racism than others in general. I’m not saying there are never exceptions, but overall? I’d take the word of a POC over a white person.

I do identify more with minorities because I am a woman. In terms of raw numbers, we are a majority, but just like POC, we are largely excluded from positions of power by the white male structure. Women are classified as a minority for that reason.

Racism or misogyny is rarely an excuse, but often perceived as such by those who are in possession of power because it’s not something they experience. That’s not about blaming white males. The problem is their refusal to believe the minorities when they describe their experiences. It’s not something white males can easily understand because it’s not their experience.

That’s how having privilege works; that’s what it means. The others have to appeal to the powerful. What a deal.

    To be continued………….

  247. Debbo 2019-02-09 23:46

Minnesota has a history that includes blackface, some of it quite recent. More distant is a story of lynchings and the University of Minnesota’s football team stomping a black opponent to death. Sickening.

    Follow the links too.

SD needs newspaper people like this and needs to support them by actually reading and considering columns like Ms. Brooks’.

  248. happy camper 2019-02-10 01:16

Horrible history Deb, but did you see the story on the Gucci ski mask mimicking blackface which has caused outrage? It was all black with red near the lips (first link). Spike Lee and others are boycotting Gucci so they have apologized. Earlier today I noticed the company made another ski mask in white with red around the lips and many others with tan and various colors. That ski mask was sold last year (in the second link) and take note of the weird things they do in “high fashion” many of which one could find offense. The sweater/ski mask combo sold for $850 and the ski mask $110. That’s offense!!! But not racist. Maybe it’s time to remember how far we’ve come in a relatively short period of time rather than find ways to be constantly outraged.

“Maybe it’s time to remember how far we’ve come in a relatively short period of time rather than find ways to be constantly outraged.”

    A couple things.

Probably doesn’t have to be one or the other.

POC are still being beaten, strangled, killed because they are not white.

Some outrage is mistaken and overdone. On the other hand, when should we be outraged over people being beaten and killed due solely to skin color?

  250. Roger Cornelius 2019-02-10 20:07

    Debbo
When we have a racist in the White House that is supposedly the leader of a nation of free people, we have to pause and consider that if we have made progress toward ending racing, the President of the United States and his enablers have erased it all and we have actually taken steps backward.

  251. Debbo 2019-02-10 20:15

I agree Roger. In the recent past, racist beliefs were a shameful thing. They still are, even if the president is proud of his racism. That’s just another thing he’s wrong about.

  252. happy camper 2019-02-10 20:16

So we’re in agreement we need a new President. We should always be outraged when people are judged based solely on skin color, but that includes judging white people and assuming they are a certain thing. Trump has not erased it all we have still come a long, long way. With the bar this low we’ll get a better President.

  253. Roger Cornelius 2019-02-10 21:37

Sorry HC, I’m not buying it. The Trump presidency has erased virtually all the progress that has been made in racial relations of the past 50 years.
You know how I know HC? Because as an American Indian and activist for the biggest part of those 50 years I have watched Trump systematically destroy relations with tribes over oil drilling rights off and on the reservations, employment opportunities that have always been hard to find are now even harder to find with Trump cuts in funding. We can go down that same road on healthcare, etc.
If we can get Trump out of office by the end of the week, we have a lot of ground to make up.
This is what tribes have to make up, every city and community have to recover from this nationalist actions.

  260. Roger Cornelius 2019-02-14 13:00

It is hilarious that someone in this day and age would still use Breitbart as a source.
I don’t know what anybody would hope to gain by suing Nathan Phillips, he’s a Native American with no money or resources.

  261. Debbo 2019-02-14 13:50

The little MAGAt boys started the racist behavior. The Indian Elders stepped into the breach. The little MAGAt boys smirked and smarmed and preened and shouted like little MAGAt boys are wont to do.

Vatican Inc’s diocese doesn’t think the racist behavior preceding the Elders attempt at intervention was “instigating behavior.” Instigation didn’t begin until the Elders intervened.

That interpretation is what does not surprise me. The locals know the bish overseeing the diocese and school is racist scum and doesn’t mind the students behaving the same way. The students are well aware of all this too. Therefore, regarding the outcome of the diocese’s “investigation”:

Are we surprised? We are not.

  262. Debbo 2019-02-14 14:19

  265. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-02-17 11:53

So wait a minute: if I come up to smug rich racists and provoke them, and they respond with racist expressions, they aren’t really making smug expressions of racism?

That’s as nutty as declaring the emergency you’ve just declared isn’t really an emergency.

  266. happy camper 2019-02-17 16:27

Yes, if you chose to characterize it in a most black/white fashion. Most people after reviewing all available video and other information would call the tomahawk chops racially insensitive, not racist. But in your description, if you attempted to provoke someone, wouldn’t it be fair to question those motives? And we all know people react, including ourselves. Donald Pay recently called me a Fascist though he generally seems logical, rational, and thoughtful. I had provocatively called President Obama “Obummer” in referring to his 13 states of emergency, but according to your logic all blame still lies with Donald for that hateful remark. He probably only called me that because I’m gay that’s the way white patriarchy works it doesn’t matter if they are supposedly progressive white men just can’t wait to keep us gay people down Donald wanted his pound of flesh and I was his prey. Did anyone call him out – no – because white people with white privilege are all the same and they stick together. Was I surprised? I was not.

  267. Debbo 2019-02-17 16:57

HC said, “Most people after reviewing all available video and other information would call the tomahawk chops racially insensitive, not racist.”

What evidence do you base that on? Or is that your opinion? (Seeking clarification.)

  268. Roger Cornelius 2019-02-17 17:53

Is there a real difference between racially insensitive and racist?
My respect for anyone diminishes when they call President Obama childish names.
As the nations first black president he has had to face so much ridicule, he doesn’t need to face anymore.

  269. happy camper 2019-02-17 19:25

Yes, everything has degrees Roger. Slightly insulting versus blatant discrimination if everything is racist nothing is racist. Seems like your rule should also apply to Trump even if you don’t like him he faces constant ridicule. I voted for Obummer twice!!! Sometimes I’m just trying to make a point. Ok Deb, my “evidence” is everyone who retracted their condemnations. That didn’t happen here I was not completely surprised although I thought a few more would have fessed up to making a rush to judgment. If you haven’t seen all that, which granted is not a poll, makes me wonder what you read. Mainstream media outlets, celebrities, politicians, went oops we did wrong. But not the libbies which always worries me it’s too easy to only read what makes us feel good and hunker down in a bubble. Within our lifetimes news has never been more polarized. There’s no Walter Cronkite figure, real solid straight news that pulls people together. This whole terrible story was a blunder of reporting and for the record I hope that Jussie Smollett did not fabricate his story, but we have to learn as individuals not to be so eager to prejudge and let all the facts come out. This should be a learning moment.

  270. Debbo 2019-02-17 20:07

So your “evidence” is anecdotal. Okay, you can use anecdotes but you should probably be more careful in making your sweeping generalizations. I believe you’ve made that same comment to others here.

    “most people . . . everyone who retracted . . . ”
It doesn’t take long to type “imo . . . based on what I’ve read” or other brief words to let the reader know your source.

In the same comment where you’re decrying all the people who “rushed to judgment”, you’re also judging the “libbies” in general, based on some commenters here I guess.

It looks to me like it’s okay for you to generalize, lump people together, rush to judgment and so forth, but not for others.

  271. happy camper 2019-02-17 20:10

Well, then count up Deb. How many people here apologized for rushing to judgment? Looks to me like you’re real good with denial.

  272. Porter Lansing 2019-02-17 20:19

I won’t ever apologize for labeling that high school kid smirking in the Indian mans face or for labeling the kids doing the tomahawk chop in front of a Native American as racist. Why would I? It’s true. I asserted nothing other than that. If others said other things, that’s their business. Cory said nothing untrue, either.

  273. happy camper 2019-02-17 20:24

Get real Porter you wanted to destroy one of those kids future career, or so you said. Anything is “true” in a black and white definition. What about lying Nathan Phillips who pounded a drum in a kid’s face and wanted to meet the pope? I guess he’s a hero.

  274. Robin Friday 2019-02-17 20:41

You get real, happy. Nathan was pounding his drum before the kid(s) got in his face and refused to let him continue down the walk. I wasn’t there, and neither were you but lots of others were.

Who is the dumbest liberal on this blog? That’s a hard decision to make. It creates challenges.

  280. Robin Friday 2019-02-17 20:59

Nathan was heading for the controversy the Black Israelites were causing. He was minding his own business, which is peace. The kids didn’t cause anything, but they did deliberately and purposely obstruct and impede his progress and got in his face, which is a violation of freedom of assembly. And they did it just for spite and with the whoops and the chops, made fun of Nathan and companions for being Indian.

There is no blunder in telling those boys they behaved improperly. That fact stands, as affirmed by Hap in acknowledging they were at least racially insensitive.

Now, as for the gratuitous insults, Hap, knock it off. Your little provocation theater is not making a point. Your insults are unwarranted and beyond anything you impute to Nathan Phillips in terms of offensive behavior.

  287. Robin Friday 2019-02-17 21:27

Insults and name calling. When they run low on logic, resort to insults and name-calling. Another surprise to no one. Ever notice they really never answer a point?

  288. Robin Friday 2019-02-17 21:28

Thank you, Cory. I didn’t see that before I posted that last.

  289. happy camper 2019-02-17 21:31

I wanted to show agency of provocation. Cory said I had to knock it off, but think about high school minds. They actually were quite restrained considering the circumstances.

  290. Robin Friday 2019-02-17 21:36

Funny, happy, I was thinking the same thing about high school: Insults and name-calling are disallowed in most polite circles after high school. They add nothing to the discussion or to anyone’s enlightenment.

  291. Robin Friday 2019-02-17 21:38

The Gucci comment was added just for a little humor. (I bet Gucci neckscarves are made in China.)

  292. happy camper 2019-02-17 21:40

The only time I have ever heard anyone being on the lower end of the IQ scale was Trump referring to black Congresswoman Maxine Waters as low scale IQ. Racist much, Happy?
Happy is very much like Trump, they both think they have high IQ’s because they call people names. Have you noticed that Trump hasn’t called Nancy Pelosi or Putin any names? Odd.

  294. happy camper 2019-02-17 21:53

Roger, I was trying to provoke to show actions have consequences, and the person provoking has responsibilities. Cory said that shouldn’t matter, but young people have not developed their frontal cortex so they lack restraint. I’m right even if Cory won’t admit it.

  295. Roger Cornelius 2019-02-17 22:01

As for pounding his drum, I suspect magat brats were making much more noise than Nathan Phillip’s drum beat.

  303. mike from iowa 2019-02-18 07:57

Magat hat brat has got hisself one stud of a legal gun for hire, one L Lin Wood, a top libel lawyer in the country. Now I got to wonder who pays this dude his enormous fees, because Drumpf probably couldn’t afford him even if Drumpf was half as wealthy as he claims.

The chant in and of itself is considered a slur by American Indians.
In multiple videos, the students—some of whom, prior to gathering at the Lincoln Memorial, were allegedly howling “MAGA!” at random female passers-by—can be seen engaging in the familiar chant, bringing their arm downward as if wielding a tomahawk while belting out a crude version of traditional Native American songs. Fans of the Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Chiefs, Florida State University, and numerous high schools with Native American mascots have been chopping away for decades. But make no mistake: The chant in and of itself is considered a slur by Native Americans and advocacy groups have plaintively asked sports teams to stop rubber-stamping this behavior since it first gained prominence.

I noticed the names, also Roger. Covington Catholic has a long history of tolerating racist slurs and behavior among it’s students, in Kentucky. I have a photo of Covington students dressed in black face at a basketball game, openly taunting a black High School basketball player (from the opposing team), no more than six feet away from him. I have declaration from referees in Covington’s sports league attesting to the continued racist behavior at Covington Catholic. Etc., etc, …. etc.

  316. Debbo 2019-02-18 15:54

Jeez, this is a massive forest of whitesplaining from Jason and HC.

Roger, I’m really sorry you have to put up with their racist scheidt. Their behavior is shameful, just like those Covington brats, and Jason and HC can’t explain it away. I quit reading the crap on this post because all those 2 have to offer is shameless crap. If they had any decency they’d slink away now.

Again, I’m sorry you have to put up with this whitesplaining. Its racist and abusive.

  317. Roger Cornelius 2019-02-18 16:44

Thanks Debbo, I appreciate your kind words and know they come from your heart and the heart of others like you.
I have been going to war with the likes of Happy and Jason for 70 years, every year they are like cockroaches and just keep coming from their know-it-all world.
Jason unfairly and unknowingly criticizes Cory on this blog for everything Cory says. Cory has an intuitive knowledge about his Indian neighbors in this state. Cory takes everything I write about my Indian lineage seriously and never mocks me or other Indians that may most here.
What needs to happen with the know-it-alls, Happy Camper and Jason, is for them to start writing their own blogs and quit taking up space on DFP.

  318. mike from iowa 2019-02-18 16:56

After reading the comments on the Uni-Watch they all appeared to follow the same pattern as if written by the same person.

Kinda what I was thinking, Porter. They did look quite similar.

  319. happy camper 2019-02-18 17:21

Cory needs to hear the tomahawk chops are racist to justify what would otherwise be a very misleading post. If that’s so important for you to believe, then so be it, but this is much more about how people get triggered, the media reacts, politicians, celebrities, and the truth gets lost. Deb, if you didn’t understand my pokes were a social exercise than you really are a fool. We should be learning not to prejudge and rush to judgment. I’m still waiting on what happens with Jussie Smollett, but it’s starting to look more like that was a hoax, more so than this Covington incident. But why? There are so many authentic problems why do activists do this? And why do we fall for it?
“Jussie Smollett and a Perfect Crime: An object lesson in what happens when people in positions of political and cultural authority indulge their biases by suspending disbelief.”
    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/18/opinion/jussie-smollett-attack.html

  320. Porter Lansing 2019-02-18 17:42

The tomahawk chop is racially insensitive and non-inclusive. Doing it to mock an Indian elder is beyond both those descriptions. That action can accurately be described as a racial slur. Committing a racial slur is undoubtably racist.

  321. Roger Cornelius 2019-02-18 18:03

Speaking of triggered, it seems that anytime anything related to this thread Happy is here to comment.
Does anyone here believe that Happy was conducting some kind of social experiment after he called so many people names? Cory denied he had any role with any social experiment.
Jussie Smollet? Who is that? Sounds like someone is a little more than triggered.

  322. Porter Lansing 2019-02-18 18:10

Smollet is a story on right-wing talk radio. Kid calls people names when he’s lonely. I know lots of specific insults to crush his esteem like a cracker but sending him home crying again is of little benefit to anyone. Especially him. Eastern SD weather is hard on people.

  323. mike from iowa 2019-02-18 19:08

Smollett is a Gay, Black actor who was reportedly assaulted by 2 guys yelling maga stuff and put a noose around his neck. Rightwingers claim he orchestrated the attack himself. There is a grand jury investigating this now. Two Nigerian bros who are friends of Smollett are said to have told police they were paid to attack Jussie by Jussie.

This appears to me to be right wingers trying to claim victimhood and blame libs for advancing an other false naRRATIVE LIKE THEY KEEP CLAIMING WAS DONE TO MAGAT HAT BRAT.

  324. Roger Cornelius 2019-02-19 00:16

Why doesn’t Jason start his own blog so he can cover any stories he wants from rightwing propaganda sites.

  325. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-02-19 05:04

No doubt, Roger! Jason, I started my blog because I felt certain important issues were not receiving sufficient media attention. You are free to do the same.

  326. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-02-19 05:23

The Covington boys and their desperate defenders display the primary delusion of Trumpists: that their racism isn’t racism but a justified response to provocation.

White America is uncomfortable because people of color are approaching.

Nathan Phillips approached the Covington boys and opened his mouth.

Mexicans approach America looking for jobs.

Hondurans approach America seeking safety for their children.

Somalis approach Aberdeen, get jobs and groceries and cars, and pray at our gas station.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ihlan Omar approach the microphone.

It’s like a massive case of Driving While Black. If you are Lakota, Hispanic, African, or any shade lighter than Wally and the Beaver, you’d better stay in your ghetto, stay on your side of the wall, stay off our streets and sidewalks, stay out of our white spaces and out of our awareness. And above all, stay silent. Stay silent about your identity, your identity, your claims that we white folks somehow built our nation on privilege, discrimination, and sin we must confess and seek forgiveness and (gulp!) atonement for.

One peep out of you n—you troublemakers, and provocateurs, and you’ve got it coming.

Donald Trump is the expression of the insecurity and rage that white folks project onto the “provocation” of people of color who take away our exclusive majority privilege, simply by approaching.

That’s how white people get triggered. That’s why white people want to talk about anything other than the blatant racism of white boys mocking an Indian elder and smirking in their confidence that they are justified in doing so, just like their icon Donald Trump.

  327. happy camper 2019-02-19 10:52

The thing is Cory, I’m trying to understand the dynamics and stepping back to see the larger picture it looks like Politics of Grievance that both sides know how to play. Trump certainly does with his base, but also the left. I will accept your position and many others is sincere but also ripe for exploitation.

To prove this three academics falsified papers (many being published) for social journals, the most extreme example taking parts of Mein Kampf and replacing “the party” with feminist language like “solidarity allyship”, “neo-liberal feminism” and “multi-variate matrix of domination.” It was peer reviewed, sometimes described as too liberal, and was about to be published until the Wall Street Journal reported what they were doing.

Yes, there are real bigots in the world, real stupid Trumpists, but what is the deeper takeaway? The successful “minorities” I know concentrate on their life and career, put all their energy there and get rewarded for it. I’m deeply uncomfortable with Identify Politics and calling people POC, or even the labels for gay people and so on. I think those labels will be discarded someday but until then the Politics of Grievance is very powerful.

Fake academic scandal: Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf words used in embarrassing journal hoax: https://thewest.com.au/news/world/fake-academic-scandal-adolf-hitlers-mein-kampf-words-used-in-embarrassing-journal-hoax-ng-b88979974z

  328. Porter Lansing 2019-02-19 11:34

If HC could choose between being a gay white man and being a straight black, Hispanic, Indian or Asian man he’d choose to be a gay white man. This shows that he believes that POC have a disadvantage. Telling POC to throw away their racial identity and telling white people to disregard POC’s racial identity is highly racist. Accusing POC of using their racial identity as Politics of Grievance is racist. To not realize it is even more proof of white privilege and white false victimhood.

  329. happy camper 2019-02-19 13:15

You have an interesting viewpoint Porter. We all have a perspective we want to think is right, but I’m trying to include what other people tell me about their experiences (beyond this blog). Their perspective is valid too. I know some “minorities” who say there is no discrimination, which seems more like a coping mechanism or maybe they really have hardly experienced it. I can right now picture this black guy from the military telling me this and he was being sincere. He was a confident, likable person which worries me we are not teaching kids that life is a darn hard struggle for just about everybody. Did you work hard in your restaurant? Or did your success come to you just because you were white? When you made this flip from Republican, which is probably something worth understanding for oneself if not for others because it’s a very curious thing as with Cory, it seems to have been from some very dramatic causes, one being how ruthless capitalism can be even though it had been benefiting you previously. You seemed to be doing all the right things to get ahead, being responsible, working hard, being creative, right down the line, but an unregulated insurance market threw everything in disarray. So the lesson, to me it might be moderation over an ideology, looking at things individually, not relying on the structure to resolve all problems, but some problems. This rift between these two sides remain: the structure versus the individual when it should be obvious neither one is a complete answer. Equality of opportunity versus equality of outcome neither can ever occur completely but there’s a huge area for compromise. While I tend to look at the responsibilities of the individual first and what that can accomplish, a conservative view I guess, I understand that sometimes what other posters say has validity, but going entirely one way to blame the structure for everything would leave people to feel as though they have no agency in the world which is a very harmful thing to my mind. That’s not at all an empowering narrative and an incorrect one, and it seems we do live our lives through a running narrative which is why the story is so imporant, and why we argue about it.

  330. Porter Lansing 2019-02-19 13:59

Sincere? A black military man telling a white guy he’s rarely been discriminated against? His motive was to not disparage the military because he’d get his rank reduced if he did it enough times. Ever heard a black guy tell another black guy he’s rarely been discriminated against? No. Because a black guy wouldn’t say that around you and the other guy would laugh so hard they’d both be rolling on the floor. You’re pretty naïve, whitey. Luckily you live where it’s all white. Kind of like an “ivory tower” of white privilege.

  331. Cory Allen Heidelberger 2019-02-19 18:48

No, Hap. Right now, the most important issue, the biggest issue, in educating those boys is to tell them they behaved badly and should behave differently, more humanely, more civilly… and not be racist. No excuses. No back talk. No lawyers or media consultants. Don’t be racist.

The next biggest issue is to recognize will ill lurks in the souls of the insecure white people who are triggered when people of color “approach,” who treat the presence and speech of people of color as a provocation justifying Trumpist, bullying responses.

  332. Robin Friday 2019-02-19 19:17

Walking through a crowd at a very open outdoor very public meeting beating a drum to get where you want to go is not provocation. Surrounding the person walking to tell him he can’t go where he wants to go and standing in his way and refusing to allow him to proceed is provocative, not to mention rude and illmannered.

If we’re going to listen to everyone involved, then we listen to what Nathan Philips says also. From the numerous essays and articles I’ve read and videos I’ve watched, I’ve learned that Nathan says he was on his way to be near the altercation that the people who called themselves “Black Israelites” were presenting, hopefully to preserve some peace, calm the situation, prevent physical confrontation or maybe just drown out the noise.

At any rate, the boys did little but make more trouble.

  333. Robin Friday 2019-02-19 19:28

And speaking of taking personal responsibility for making a situation better, when I think of this incident in terms of taking personal responsibility, I see Nathan Phillips.

Sandmann family suing WaPo ffor 250M for defamation.

“The lawsuit claims that the newspaper “wrongfully targeted and bullied” the teen to advance its bias against President Donald Trump because Sandmann is a white Catholic who wore a Make America Great Again souvenir cap on a school field trip to the March for Life anti-abortion rally in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 18.”

MAGA HAT KID’s parents are going to owe WaPo for bringing a frivolous lawsuit.
The claim against WaPo is that the paper reported that the kid instigated a confrontation with Phillips. The claim also asserts that the kid physically intimidated Phillips. The claim also asserts that the kid engaged in racist taunts.
The kid DID instigate a confrontation and intimidate Phillips by standing only 12 inches from Phillips face. An intimidating distance for a senior citizen. The kid didn’t personally engage in racist taunts although his clothing (MAGA HAT) did.
The kid suffered NO permanent damages to his character or future. Nothing that every teenager doesn’t experience, often.
No damages are owed. Suit dismissed.

Good one, Cory. If Donna (Jason) has to work harder to access this thread, we may be spared her useless expressions of hate.

This isn’t about Cory recycling the most comment threads every thirty days it is about Cory’s conspiracy to keep Jason from finding the thread he wants to comment on hidden.

Should Cory change his blog rules to accommodate Jason and keep certain thread’s up past the 30 day recycling period?

  340. Porter Lansing 2019-02-20 13:00

@Roger & MFI … Jason probably is Cory. Have you ever had a really good teacher who played the devil’s advocate, just to make you think? Make you so mad you extended your brain past what you normally would just to prove the jerk wrong? It’s a valid technique and it keeps us old guys and ladies busy while he’s at work.
