Thune Denying Reality: Economy Looking Better Under Biden

Senator John Thune needs you to believe that President Joe Biden’s policies are hurting the economy. Businessman and blogger John Tsitrian says Senator Thune needs to look at reality:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says otherwise. In a report it issued earlier this year, BLS says the post-pandemic inflation we experienced had “three main components … volatility of energy prices, backlogs of work orders for goods and service caused by supply chain issues due to COVID-19, and price changes in the auto-related industries.”

Some argue that Biden’s policies had something to do with last year’s run-up in energy prices, but the fact is, energy prices are created by global supply and demand issues. I don’t give Biden credit for the fact that gasoline prices are substantially lower than they were last year at this time, and I don’t point the finger at him for the way they spiked upwards in the first place. As to supply chain issues and price change issues in auto-related industries – again a worldwide market that has nothing to do with Biden’s policies – Biden didn’t create them.

Thune is all wet when he blames Bidenomics for that last bout of inflation. What’s worse, Thune blithely ignores that inflation this year is less than half what it was in 2022 [John Tsitrian, “South Dakota Sen. John Thune Bad-Mouths Bidenomics, But the Reality of Hard Data Says He’s Full of It,” South Dakota Standard, 2023.08.11].

Under President Biden’s policies, inflation has dropped from its post-pandemic spike to the same level as during President George W. Bush’s second term:

Bureau of Labor Statistics, 12-month percentage change in Consumer Price IndexJuly 2003–July 2023, retrieved 2023.08.11.
Bureau of Labor Statistics, 12-month percentage change in Consumer Price Index, July 2003–July 2023, retrieved 2023.08.11.

Yesterday’s inflation report showed the first uptick, from 3.0% in June to 3.2% in July, in 13 months, but that’s mostly because we’re comparing inflation to July 2022, which was when inflation started declining. And as the President pointed out yesterday, “Unemployment remains near record lows, a higher share of working age Americans are working now than in 20 years, real wages for the average American worker are growing and are higher than they were before the pandemic — with lower wage workers seeing the largest gains.”

You’d think Senator Thune would be happy with this good economic news. But with his party likely to nominate an incompetent, bullying traitor for President for the third time in a row, Senator Thune and all of his Republican colleagues have to keep telling us that white is black, ignorance is strength, and freedom is slavery.

Inflation is currently dropping. The insane rise in interest rates over a short period is doing its job. <– this reduces inflation

House prices are ridiculous and people are early tapping their 401ks at an alarming rate. Credit card usage is off the charts but supposedly current delinquency rate is manageable. US debt has been going parabolic. Something will hit the fan eventually. I'm not blaming Biden.

Remember back in 2006 when Bush’s economy was in trouble and Thune was pushing to give everyone a $100 gas rebate?
Every once in awhile I write to Thune and ask him for the money, suggesting that he pay it out of his 16 million + campaign fund.

  3. Loren

Right, Dave. Why would a guy that was only going to serve 2 terms in the senate need that money in his THIRD term? Also, Thune was against deficit spending before he went silent for 4 years before he was, again, against deficits. He was all in favor of letting the “people speak” (Merick Garland) before he rammed thru the Notre Dame cheer leader week before an election. John will be whatever you need him to be in the moment, no core values, just flexible pablum.

Imagine if every American voter simply chose the candidate that’s best for them and we all stopped worshipping the pretention of trying to convince others to agree with us.
Cory’s Blog would disappear as would Pat’s but they’re not doing it for the money. Pat sells real estate and Cory has a good job with the Nebraska government.
It’s divisive, harmful, and selfish to America to try and change people’s minds about politics.

“flexible pablum” Gotta love that man, good one.

Trump set a new record for oil production when he was in office. Yesterday we learned that oil production
under Biden is on track to beat Trump’s record by 16% making the US the number one oil producer in the world with the Saudis in the number 2 slot.

Unfortunately it probably will not lower gas prices as all the oil produced goes on the world market to be sold to the highest bidder.

  7. Arlo Blundt

Old Guy–you are correct…USA is just one player in the vast oil scheme…the Powers That Be in the oil business can set, within some limits, any oil price they deem necessary for profit..The Arabs also have considerable influence. It is “a mature Market” as they say.

First off, “Bidenomics?” About the only thing wrong with Biden’s economic policy is that he’s pushing a marketing ploy. Just stick with the facts.

Republicans complained about people staying home from work. When people went back to work, that generated inflation until production and demand balanced. it’s not hard to figure out, but Republicans want to have it all ways and up the ass.

Sure, higher than wanted inflation is a fact, but anyone with any sense knows that after the economy slowed during the Trump pandemic it was going to heat up when things opened up. That was Trump policy. That was Biden policy. Inflation started creeping up under Trump. I don’t blame Trump, and I don’t blame Biden. It’s just the way it was going to be after the pandemic.

It’s not as if Thune didn’t agree to Trump’s over-spending. I may have structured it differently, but spending during the pandemic was good policy, as was Biden’s spending to get us out of the economic doldrums. At least Biden secured funding for some forward-looking projects that will last and will do good. I didn’t like some of the spending Biden did, including the schemes for things like nuclear power, clean coal and CO2 pipelines. Those are the things Republicans like, though.

Telling the public that the economy is either bad or good because of statistics like unemployment numbers or stock market value doesn’t work. Never has. People only know what is going on in their own household economy and their own business. It’s either good or it’s bad for them personally. They are either comfortable or they are struggling.

Inflation is not dropping, and if I were to guess, the real inflationary rate is sitting at not less of 20% at the moment. Look around, the cost of doing business, the cost to buy inventory, the cost ratio on just about every sector is way up. If I have to pay $1,500 for a used car with 200,000 miles for a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, I have to sell that car for a minimum of $2,000 dollars. And that is not counting any mechanical repairs that I normally would fix prior to selling, which increases the price of that car more. You are seeing the same effects in the Food Supply, the Oil Industry, Clothing Industry, you name it. In the vehicle repair industry, parts are dangerously high, meaning the margins are up higher than prior to 2020. And you cannot fault the business owners.

The FED is manipulating the data, they are not reporting, nor accurately assessing true prices of products. To review, and assess the actual costs, you must compare the same product, item, and same exact inventory item. But that is NOT what the federal government is doing. They are NOT comparing apples to apples, they assuming, when prices go up, Americans buy cheaper products. They are comparing prices of GOOD quality products vs Cheaper-Made Non-Quality products. Thus cheaper prices. That is NOT the way to compare prices. ”

When I go to a car auction today, I am forced to bid a much higher price for that 2005 Pontiac Grand Am versus what i once had to bid for that same 2005 Grand Am two years ago, same age, same year, same model, more miles in fact, and the price is no less than 100% more. DO NOT tell me inflation is dropping. It is not.

Been in the automotive industry for more than 40 years, and it is much tougher today, due to inflation, than it was then. Its harder to get parts today…people do NOT go cheaper just cause prices go u p, they pay for quality, and that means prices are up.

Stop lying, the economy is in a terrible position right now…

The problem with Zit’s long rambling, basically incoherent blatherings is his 2003 Pontiac aged 2years in the telling.

  14. jerry

Like the dude would fix the problem on his mom’s Pontiac.

  15. Donald Pay

“The FED is manipulating the data…” Hey, what the Fed assumes are based on economic fact. People look for the cheapest price for the quality of product they are willing to accept. I do that, and so do most people. Like most things, it’s not true for some items. We all have our own standards and we all have our own price. I’m not finicky about paper towels. I’ll take a chance on a cheap brand to get a good price. I am finicky about salmon. I want good quality, and if I can’t get good quality salmon at a price I’m willing to pay, I’ll skip it, and wait for next week. If next week has good quality salmon at a high price, I might buy it, and grumble, but I’ve spaced out my purchases in a way that the Fed would take into account.

  16. Mike Lee Zitterich

Again, whether you buy a cheap brand means nothing, IF you want to assess the rate of inflation, then you compare APPLES to APPLES, period.

ANd I take care of my vehicles, and have always sold quality cars, to people like me. HONESTY always means more to me. ANd for people who actually do business with me, know me better than ANY OF YOU do

Slow to no services. Prices too high, quality too low. As well as political opinions where they are not needed nor wanted. Would not recommend to anyone

Conflating the “used car” market with the American economy if a false equivalency. People very rarely, if ever, spend money on “used” merchandise. Inflation isn’t reflective of personal purchases of “used” anything.

Inflation is going down. Unemployment is at an all-time low. Wages are rising. Bidenomics is a success.

  19. Donald Pay

Mike Z., People don’t keep buying what they think are overpriced items. If your understanding of the economy was true, there would be no way to get out of an inflationary period. People search for a low-priced item or a lower priced seller. Or they bargain. Or, they do without. That’s how real people act. The only people who act like you say they act (buy overpriced items) are wealthy folks who have enough money to not care about the price, or suckers. Which one are you?

There are apples and then there are apples. Where I shop, there are expensive apples, moderately priced apples and apples on special. Let’s say I like Honey Crisp apples, and prefer to buy them, but Fuji apples are on special, and they are my second favorite. I lower inflation by buying the Fuji apples. Hey, I can live with Fuji apples if it lowers my grocery bill and reduces the inflation I feel when I go to the check out.

Funny, how you are open with your thoughts, opinins, and beliefs and people like E PLATYPUSS makes up more lies about you. This person has lost all credibility. I have been more than respectful, and Honest. I am NOT a racist, and I have never made no comment as she accused me of. GET A LIFE. I have always treated people right, and I have always been very respectful to all “Customers” who have come to my office, and my family has always been very respectful and honest with all our customers who we treat like family. I am tired of people slandering my families good name, and I am tired of all these people acting immature.

E PLATYPUSS has no class, and if she ever came to talk to me, I would tell her to my face, to SHUT UP, GET OFF MY PROPERTY

Mike Zitterich claims, ” I have been more than respectful, and Honest. I am NOT a racist,”
This is a quote from Mike Zitterich. Do you have anything to say, Mike Zitterich? It’s quite evident you in fact ARE a racist.

“We will never allow the White Race to die off, regardless of extreme the Federal Govt goes to allowing open borders that allows illegal immigration into the country. We have known for decades that the democrat agenda is to overload our borders with war criminals, other people with the intent to decrease the White population. That is evident in all federal policies such as same sex marriage, promoting inter-racial marriages, abortion, etc. Blame the FEDS for all this division among the races. – MIKE ZITTERICH

You don’t call people names? Pants on fire, bub. Now you can tell me that to your face, whatever that means. You are allegedly a business person. Aren’t the customers always right?

Inflation drops. Thune misses the truth. The voters vote for Thune, what is truth anyway?

As the Libertarians sometimes mention, you can be a Self-Governor, or better yet, I say, just be a Governor, right now. No votes needed.

Got your .003 or 3/10ths of one per cent more money because of the tiny sales tax cut? That’s your budget.

The truth? It’s very important. It sets us all free.
