If you don’t conform to conservative Christian norms of gender and sexuality, the state of South Dakota is out to quash your liberty. But Equality South Dakota will help pay for your college, if you can write a good essay:
The Lawrence Novotny Scholarship Essay Competition has chosen to provide scholarships to high school seniors who are heading to ANY college, university, technical school, trade school etc., as well as current college, university, technical school, trade school etc. Students who are post high school can be enrolled in any field of study, but they must be completing their secondary education in South Dakota. One high school senior will be awarded a cash scholarship of $250 and one currently enrolled student (college, university, technical school, trade, school) will be awarded a cash scholarship of $500.
Applicants will have a packet of information submitted which will also include a completed essay on the following topic:
In the wake of Anti-2SLGBTQ+ legislation that has swept America in the past couple of years, why should we be able to talk about these issues in an educational context? [Equality South Dakota, scholarship announcement, retrieved 2023.04.06]
…or if you engage in constructive community service and activism for the targets of South Dakota’s sexual oppression:
Equality South Dakota’s Audacity Award is a scholarship for 2SLGBTQ+ and allied students who have been engaging in community service and/or activism work that seeks to better the lives of 2SLGBTQ+ people in South Dakota. This award is available to high school seniors who are heading to ANY college, university, technical school, trade school etc., as well as current college, university, technical school, trade school etc. Students who are post high school can be enrolled in any field of study, but they must be completing their secondary education in South Dakota.
One high school senior will be awarded a cash scholarship of $250 and one currently enrolled student (college, university, technical school, trade, school) will be awarded a cash scholarship of $500 [Equality SD, retrieved 2023.04.06].
Applications for both awards are due June 3.
Why any 2SLGBTQ+ people would want to attend a post-secondary institution in South Dakota remains a mystery.
These essays will be worth a read. Send them to Jon Hansen. Give him 72 hours to read them. I’ll consult with him to prevent their abortion. I’m very coercive
Today the Tennessee legislature showed the nation why CRT teaching matters; why young in Wisconsin strongly voted; why the 1619 Project (birthed in a working class neighborhood in Cedar Rapids, IOWA). The old generation and its bankrupt thinking is being washed away.
Agree, John. The Republican (Racist) Party has officially lost the Gen Z vote for years to come after what has happened in TN.
Thank you Pubs, you made it so easy for us. It will be your biggest regret.
