Lakota journalist and publisher and South Dakota Hall of Famer Tim Giago retired from the newspaper business ten years ago. Coming up on his 87th birthday, Giago is retiring again this July:
I am going to retire from this business in July and my current newspaper, Native Sun News Today, will be in good hands. I have a wonderful, well-trained team here at NSNT ready to pick up the mantle and run with it.
For more than 40 years I have worn the visor and the arm garters of an editor and publisher. I am proud of the many newspapers I have published all of those years, but it is time for a new generation of Native journalists and editors to take over.
I hope they continue to keep the doors of public opinion open and continue to publish all sides of a story [Tim Giago—Nanwica Kciji (Stands Up For Them), “It Is Time to Put the Paper to Bed,” Indianz.com, 2021.06.07].
Perhaps stepping away from editing and publishing will leave Giago more time to share his thoughts on pressing Native issues in South Dakota. Or maybe he’ll get antsy and start a new Native newspaper, and we’ll get another retirement announcement when he turns 97, and 107….
He’s a great man. Wish him the best.
Thank you Mr. Giago for your reporting, a true first amendment advocate.
I have long admired Tim Giago’s journalistic approach to raising awareness of native issues. I know enough of his life story to stand in awe of his temporate coverage while bearing a memory of savage treatment by the predecessors (and sometimes contemporaries, and sometimes actual afflictors) of the arrogant folks who cheated and massacred his grandparents and parents and him, with whom he has had to deal. He is a gentleman in a world where it is increasingly difficult to maintain that quality. I know I lost it about 40 years ago.
I met Tim about 30 yrs ago when he opened his new building and printing press. I was a young sales rep and he graciously invited me to the ribbon cutting and grand opening. I was very moved by the drum ceremony and the blessing of the press with burning sage. After that he took me aside and thanked me for coming. He said he hoped I wasn’t uncomfortable and I replied that I was honored to have been invited. Going forward I picked up copies of the Lakota Times when I could. I always enjoyed his column in the RC Journal as well
Hey, I know someone from the NS!
I’m not a regular reader, but I’d like to recognize and thank Mr. Giago for his courage in crafting the stories.
I hope to be as successful someday.
Sincerely,
John
Thank you Mr. Giago for “for going where no man has gone before.”
Maybe he has time to serve on the Tribal Relations Committee?
He’d eat Schoenbeck’s lunch and take his milk money.
And true SD hero. Always came up with the next big thing.
“Media the enemy of the people” my ass. Republican mouth breathers carved “murder the media” on door(s) while roaming the breached Capitol searching for Nancy, and then when Trump ordered the ‘hit’ on Pence, searching for him and potentially ANY OTHER POLITICIAN THE 4000 some insurrectionists could have encountered, but for BLUE LIVES MATTER, except for the BLUE LIVES THEY CAPTURED, BEAT AND KILLED. They carried zip ties to take hostages. Police were Beaten with BLUE LIVES MATTER spears and flag staffs as clubs. 140 officers were wounded. Many are still unable to serve. They were first disarmed from appropriate riot gear by a Trump military plant on their police force or chain of command. Police knew civilians were carrying concealed while breaching the capitol. 500 of these m_therfu_kers have been arrested so far. Soon Trump will be arrested, the chief inciter and beneficiary of the attack on our legendary peaceful transfer of power. Just so Trump could avoid prison, which is surely coming.
