SD GOP Leaders Can’t Stop Trump Tariff Tirade

Governor Kristi Noem, Congressman Dusty Johnson, and Senators Mike Rounds and John Thune have all said the Trump tariffs are hurting South Dakota and need to end as soon as possible.

So what do we get for electing Republicans who supposedly have influence with the tariff-happy Republican in the White House? More tariffs:

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 500 points Monday after President Trump threatened to increase tariffs sharply this week on a wide range of Chinese goods because trade talks are not advancing quickly enough.

Trump, in a pair of tweets on Sunday, said he would increase tariffs to 25 percent from the current 10 percent on $200 billion of Chinese goods. On Monday, the president tweeted that the U.S. loses $500 billion a year to China [Mike Obel, “US Stocks Fall After Trump Threatens Bigger China Tariffs,” Fox Business, 2019.05.06].

I prepped this post before lunch but came home wondering if Trump would have flipped-flopped again. Having Trump in the White House is like having an untrained dog in the house—you never what he’ll have chewed up or pooped while you were gone. But U.S.-China relations expert Lu Xiang says his country is used to Trump’s erratic and reckless behavior:

“After the intensive talks, China is familiar with the style of Trump and his administration. Trump’s flip-flop announcement is not a big surprise for China, but China should be prepared for the worse-than-worst scenario”, added Lu [“China Still ‘Preparing’ Delegation for US Trip Despite Donald Trump’s Threat to Increase Tariffs,” South China Morning Post, 2019.05.06].

Congressman Dusty Johnson said he talked to Trump and USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue about trade just last Thursday. Fat lot of good that did us.

Dusty talking to another traitor when he should have been talking to Putin, Butina and trumps boss.

Just keep planting white corn in the meantime. The guys we hate across the border will buy it…at discount. How in the hell did you knuckle heads get suckered once again? After 40 years, you’d think you could figure it out, but just like the coyote and the road runner, that ACME bulldozer flattens once again.

War makes the markets rise!! Just like that, it’s only 69 down and rising! Wall Street loves the war and the good news for the war racketeers that wag the dog for trump. Raytheon stocks are on the rise! War is a racket and beats agriculture any day of the week.

“The US has deployed an aircraft carrier to the Middle East to send a “clear and unmistakable message” to Iran.

National Security Adviser John Bolton said the administration was acting “in response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings”.

The deployment of the warship was based on claims of a possible attack on US forces stationed in the region, unnamed US officials are quoted as saying.

Mr Bolton added that they would counter any attack with “unrelenting force”.”

In the meantime, Iran is laughing it’s arse off at the high jinks. They are about as worried about trump and the flotilla as they are of a cloudy day.

“Iran and Russia are strategic allies and form an axis in the Caucasus alongside Armenia. Moscow and Tehran are also military allies in the conflicts in Syria and Iraq and partners in Afghanistan and post-Soviet Central Asia.”

Republicans will do anything to keep from doing their damn jobs, what a bunch of lazy good for nothings. We need some Latinos and Blacks in Washington to go to work and get stuff done.

How do you talk trade policy when the President has such a fundamental lack of understanding on how tariffs work: President Trump believes that these tariffs are paid by the Chinese directly into the US treasury.

In his mind, is he getting the Chinese to pay the taxes that the billionaires he seeks to impress do not pay (because of Presidential/GOP tax breaks).

    Now it starts.

Trump is boxed in, Mueller to testify 5.15.

Trump sends bombers and carrier group to threaten Iran.

    North Korea fires missles.

Israel and Palestine have opened fire on one another after Bebe and Trump climbed into the hot tub together.

Trumps has nice chat w Putin after he refuses all subpeonas and his AG fails to appear at the House and misses deadlines to turn over unredacted Mueller report.

The market is negatively reacting to Trump’s escalated tarriff war with China.

His immigration war is continuing the kidnapping separation of thousands of children imprisoned on the border.

Venezuela is boiling over as Trump threatens regime change.

Our malicious narcissict is facing a self created crisis.

  7. jerry 2019-05-06 15:57

o is correct. This trust baby is out of his league.

““For 10 months, China has been paying Tariffs to the USA of 25% on 50 Billion Dollars of High Tech, and 10% on 200 Billion Dollars of other goods. These payments are partially responsible for our great economic results. The 10% will go up to 25% on Friday. $325 billion of additional goods sent to the US by China remain untaxed, but will be shortly, at a rate of 25%. The Tariffs paid to the USA have had little impact on product cost, mostly borne by China. The Trade Deal with China continues, but too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate. No!”

Here is the real deal, trump and these three boneheads in Washington, are sinking the economy. The economy is sick and in trouble.

“On Friday, the Labor Department reported that the US added 263,000 jobs in April, far above the consensus estimate. It also reported a drop in the unemployment rate, due to an unexpected shrinkage of the size of the US labor force. More Americans are working at establishments surveyed by the Labor Department, but they are working on average fewer hours per week. The total number of hours worked (the number of employed workers multiplied by average weekly hours) is actually falling.”

So there ya go, republicans do not know arithmetic, never have and never will. Keep planting. If it all goes to hell, you can get a part time job like the rest in the labor force of gig workers.

  8. Donald Pay 2019-05-06 16:11

What Jerry said is true. The increasing jobs numbers obscure what’s really happening underneath. The economy is not as good as it seems, and certainly not for workers. People are seeking second and third jobs. This time of years you get a lot of employers hiring for part-time employees, and many employers are cutting back on hours, preferring part-time workers to full-time workers. So, you get higher job numbers but fewer hours worked.

Here’s someone that really understands economics and has a real, detailed plan that will directly benefit each South Dakotan. Bonus: She’s running for president! Elizabeth Warren would neutralize Dumb Donny Dunce’s fiasco creating mess ASAP.

“Mergers mean that farmers have fewer and fewer choices for buying and selling, while vertical integration has meant that big agribusinesses face less competition throughout the chain and thus capture more and more of the profits. The result is that farmers are getting a record-low amount of every dollar Americans spend on food, food prices aren’t going down, and agribusiness CEOs and other corporate executives are raking it in. The CEO of the Chinese group that owns Smithfield — a massive meat processing company — made $291 million in 2017 alone.”

  11. John Kennedy Claussen, Sr., 2019-05-06 21:18

Sadly, 2018 was an election cycle where the South Dakota Democratic candidate for congress talked about abortion, guns, and PACs, when he should have been talking about farm prices, trade, and tariffs.

When Democrats get back to talking about economic issues that matter in time and place, is when Democrats will begin to win again here in South Dakota.

As frustrated as we may be with Dusty, Mike, John, and the Trump administration on trade here in South Dakota, we should be equally frustrated with the message or messages that our Democratic Party are bringing to the table that are often too Republican-lite, and/or too altruistic, and removed from the true economic issues that matter and issues that Democrats could win on in this state…

  12. jerry 2019-05-07 03:09

Mr. Claussen, we South Dakotan’s never speak of farm prices, trade or heaven forbid, tariffs. We never speak of those because only abortion and guns seem to matter to South Dakotan’s and especially to those whose pocket books depend on farm prices, trade and tariffs.

Even with that proverbial trade and tariff gun pointed to their head, they still think they are bulletproof and vote to pull that trigger for their suicide pact with their devils.

  13. jerry 2019-05-07 03:17

The republican lawbreakers continue to defy the Constitution of the United States and show what an outlaw republic we have now chosen to become. Putin smiles at his victory without a bullet fired in anger.

“WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has made it official: The administration won’t be turning President Donald Trump’s tax returns over to the Democratic-controlled House.” The outlaws continue to hide from real law enforcement with the stacked deck provided by other outlaws like Rounds, Thune and Johnson,

“Trump continues to bet on the worst of America because they haven’t let him down so far.”

  14. Adam 2019-05-07 03:56

A wise man once said, “war is good for the economy.” It works like for trade wars too – just gotta give it time.

Trump’s trade wars sure do seem to be helping those city people though – look at the economy. It’ll trickle down and out here to South Dakota soon enough.

In fact, if we keep our chin up and a positive attitude, one day, Trump might even give us a sky scrapper – if we grovel persuasive enough. We could call it ‘Trump Rushmore Tower’ in honor of the man who finally brought us such a vibrant amazing economy that SD deserves our first skyscraper. We tax payers could offer Ivanka first floor real estate for a Beauty Spa and Donald a top floor penthouse, of course, for Federal incentive to break ground on the project.

    Let’s do it!

The ACA works well, but the pharmaceuticals are not worth a damn. If the republicans would have done right by Americans, we would not be in the world of hurt our economy is in right now. Heath care is just one of the ways they have screwed us for their own pockets. Thune is a millionaire, how in the hell did that happen as a civil servant. Rounds is a multimillionaire and it’s easy to see how that happened, ask Joop, but not Benda.

Nick Nemec has an interesting conversation going on FB on this topic. There are Demented Donny defenders casting about for ways to blame Democrats and/or Obama for the farming debacle that is wholly Demented Donny created and GOP enabled. Thus far, Hillary conspiracies have not arisen, but it’s only a matter of time.

Boggles the mind how anyone can defend that Execrable Oaf, but I guess some prefer pretzelizing themselves to admitting they were wrong. Sort of like continuing to dig the hole deeper.

  19. jerry 2019-05-08 16:23

Here is how trumps fraudulent tariff plan works.

“President Trump has shown little interest in removing the steel and aluminum tariffs he imposed more than a year ago despite growing evidence Americans are paying a hefty price for these tariffs and increasing pressure from Republicans in Congress to remove them.

U.S. consumers and businesses are paying more than $900,000 a year for every job saved or created by Trump steel tariffs, according to calculations by experts at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The cost is more than 13 times the typical salary of a steelworker, according to Labor Department data, and it is similar to other economists’ estimates that Trump’s tariffs on washing machines are costing consumers $815,000 per job created.” Washington Post 5.7.2019

Damn expensive washing machines, we would be better off using a laundromat.

Very interesting numbers, Jerry. And Debbo—really? The Trumpists talking to Nick are trying to find a way to say Democrats implemented the tariffs? Wow—the detachment from reality really is pathological.

GOP neutered, but the IRS court has the goods to send this tax fraud to jail with Michael Cohen. Maybe to share a cell, how cute.

“Amid the hundreds of figures on 10 years of tax transcripts, one number is particularly striking: $52.9 million in interest income that Mr. Trump reported in 1989.

In the three previous years, Mr. Trump had reported $460,566, then $5.5 million, then $11.8 million in interest.

The source of that outlier $52.9 million is something of a mystery.

Taxpayers can receive interest income from a variety of sources, including bonds, bank accounts and mortgages. Hard data on the workings of Mr. Trump’s businesses is hard to come by. But public findings from New Jersey casino regulators show no evidence that he owned anything capable of generating that much interest. Nor is there any such evidence in a 1990 report on his financial condition, prepared by accountants he hired at his bankers’ request.” New York Times 5.8.2019

trump is just another crook like Nixon…on steroids. Justice takes time for this riot booster, but he will be tried for his guilt that we see each day.
