Democrats Swamp AAN Straw Poll

If straws could vote, Brown County would have an all-Democratic Legislative delegation:

Aberdeen American News, straw poll excerpt, 2018.10.23, p. 6A.
Aberdeen American News, straw poll excerpt, 2018.10.23, p. 6A.

The real polling from Sioux Falls shows Democratic gubernatorial candidate Billie Sutton leading sagging Republican nominee Kristi Noem 47% to 42% among the small subset of 110 northeast South Dakota voters. The above absolutely unscientific, unpredictive straw poll in the Aberdeen American News shows Sutton creaming Noem 86% to 14%.

To participate in the straw poll, AAN readers had to get hold of an October 4 edition of the paper, fill out the published straw poll form, and deliver it to the newspaper office.

The only thing this diverting exercise tells us is that local Democrats saw an opportunity to buy some good press for their candidates. For a buck a paper, they got to see their candidates labeled “Winners” on half of the editorial page. Hee hee!

Interestingly, on the ballot measures, where there is less motivation to push results for any specific party or person, the AAN straw poll produced these results:

  • Amendment W (IM 22 2.0): 63% YES
  • Amendment X (55% to pass amendments): 80% NO
  • Amendment Z (single-subject amendments): 54% NO
  • Initiated Measure 24 (ban out-of-state money from ballot question campaigns): 60% NO
  • Initiated Measure 25 (tobacco tax for vo-techs): 66% NO

I cast no vote in the straw poll, but the voters who did followed my lead in voting YES on the one measure placed on the ballot by regular citizens and NO on the four measures placed on our ballot by legislators.

That real polling also shows Sutton ahead in Sioux Falls which does not surprise me. Lots of signs for him around here. One thing that did catch me off guard was the degree of Noem’s aggressiveness at the debate. Dishonest aggressiveness.

He has taken heat from some Democrats for opposing an income tax and for being pro-life but he shouldn’t have to put up with Noem’s lies on the subjects too. She said “Billie has openly said he supports an income tax”.

From Kelo News…. “Sutton: “Just out of curiosity, um, why no discussion about a personal income tax?”
The ad features a group of people laughing, and someone saying, “We’re happy to put that down as your idea, though.” Sutton responds by saying, “”Now, wait a minute. Just a curious question.”

That qualifies as supporting an income tax? Seriously? If I were Sutton, I would demonstrate that lie in an ad and finish her off. Talk about a weak accusation. His “curious” question about an income tax is openly supporting an income tax? Wow.

    This is an opportunity.

  2. jimmy james 2018-10-25 07:01

Sutton has “openly” said he opposes an income tax hundreds of times. Supporting an income tax… never.

  3. Jason 2018-10-25 07:24

Sutton has “openly” said he supports Bernie’s policies. One of those policies is raising taxes.

Cory supports a State income tax but will not tell the voters that in ads.

Cory and Billie are not telling the voters the truth.

Noem has always run highly aggressive negative campaigns, That’s the kind of person she is. She lies about things like Billy not being pro life or being for an income tax. She’ll do whatever she can to win and does not care at all if It’s all based on lies.
Kristie Noem Is your typical career lying establishment politician. SD Could do much better than her.
Bill Lee represents the people and decency. Noem is the establishment.

  5. Jenny 2018-10-25 07:30

Billy Sutton. Sorry on the speaker.

  6. Porter Lansing 2018-10-25 07:37

    Jason …. “Here, boy. SQUIRREL!!”

  7. Jenny 2018-10-25 07:38

Jason You arenot going to foolSutton voters. Like I said, Kristie is running scared and is doing everything she can to tip the election to her side and she will lie as much as she can to do that.
I am not surprised because This is the kind of ruthless politician Noem is. This was to be expected and it’s as negative as ever.
South Dakotans needto know that Noemwill be more of the same in Pierre. She is extreme right wing Republican and represents the establishment, Everything that South Dakotans are sick of in their government.

  8. jimmy james 2018-10-25 07:39

Sutton’s positions are indeed public. And, as you know, they don’t align with many of Bernie’s positions. Kristi knows it too. Just another disingenuous attack.

They Republican Governors Association better pump another million dollars in here if they want to save her.

  9. Jenny 2018-10-25 07:44

Noem sayimg she doesn’t take corporate money Is one of the biggest liars and people actually believe that!

She represents everything that is wrong with politics.

  10. Jenny 2018-10-25 07:49

People need to ask themselves who would they rather want working for them , Or who would you rather work for – A sincere decent ethical guy like Billy that truly cares about people, or a self entitled, self absorbed person that feels like she has to lie to get to the top.
Billy would be considered a Republican in a lot of states. He is as moderate as they come.

  11. Jason 2018-10-25 07:56

People need to ask themselves why people from out of State are meddling in our elections.

  12. Jason 2018-10-25 07:59

    Jimmy,

    News flash. Politicians lie.

  13. OldSarg 2018-10-25 08:14

How is it Billie claims to support all “right wing” ideas such as right to life, conservatism, no gay marriage and all you out of state trolls still support him?

  14. mike from iowa 2018-10-25 08:28

People need to ask themselves why people from out of State are meddling in our elections.

Little late to Grudzilla’s party, aren’t you, Troll?

    Jimmy,

News flash. Politicians lie. So do paid Russian Trolls….bigly.

  16. Porter Lansing 2018-10-25 08:37

Jason. What exactly do you mean by “our election”. You live in Lakeville, MN. and come to Sioux Falls one weekend a month for Nat’l Guard.

  17. Jenny 2018-10-25 08:50

You never hear Republicans mention working class blue collar voters, the people that get up everyday and work their sometimes two to three jobs just to get by in SD. Democrats truly represent those people and Billie would be a great Governor representing them.

Billie understands the importance of a living wage, education funding, affordable healthcare, positive tribal relations. Billie is the Democrat that is needed in South Dakota after 40 plus years of one party government. Billie would make sure the initiative and referendum is not voted out by the Legislature, and he would fight corruption and has said he will make that one of his top issues.
He would fight having a more open government. Who could be against that?

The reason you don’t hear that from Republicans is we view people as human beings, not classes or colors.

Your bigotry and racism is on full display.

  19. Jenny 2018-10-25 13:08

Such silliness, Jason. It’s true, you never hear Republicans talk about
Working class people, like the ones that are just barely making it because of 30 years of stagnant wages.
Billy Sutton appeals to these voters more than Noem. People that have met and talked to him feel this genuineness about him while Kristi really Doesn’t have that compassion towards the working poor.

  20. Debbo 2018-10-25 20:57

Noem is a Pootiepublican. The word “compassion” does not exist in their dictionary.

  21. Debbo 2018-10-25 20:58

BTW, if the straw poll results were actually real, SD’s government would be much healthier and stronger.

Hey, Jason! Jump in a lake. My support for a state income tax as part of progressive tax reform is well-documented. I’m willing to speculate that most if not all of the people voting in the straw poll know full what what I stand for. My support for a fair taxation system is rather popular among my neighbors. I don’t have to spend my ad money on things that are already widely known and are not among the priorities I anticipate passing in my first term in the Senate.

  23. OldSarg 2018-10-26 00:00

No, it’s true Jenny. You are all the racist. You still see the color of someone’s skin as opposed to the person within. When you value the person there can be no color. All those that still identify people by the color of their skin is racist.

Good luck Cory. Your dedication in taking something from someone else’s pay is quite a jump from teacher’s pay to someone that needs the money more. It’s nice to see a government employee, making more that $25,000 a year above the state average income, give something back. You are an honorable man. Can you post a pic of your donation? A receipt would be fine. . .

  24. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-10-26 06:47

OS, again, your comment confuses me. What government employee are you talking about? Who is making $25K more than state average income? What is the state average income? What donation do you want a picture of?
