Daugaard Wants to Talk Ethanol and Trade with Trump in Sioux Falls

Dennis Daugaard, Aberdeen, 2015.09.01
Come on, Dennis! Put on your war face for Donald!

Governor Dennis Daugaard signals that he will protest Donald Trump’s anti-South Dakota policies to Il Duce’s face in Sioux Falls Friday. Gubernatorial chief of staff Tony Venhuizen tells KELO Radio that Governor Daugaard doesn’t plan to pay $1,000 to eat cheap wienies with the Whiner in Chief but will greet him at the Sioux Falls Airport Friday and angle for a policy chat:

“The Governor and First Lady are not paying to attend any of the events,” Venhuizen said.  But the Governor does hope to get the President’s ear.

“The Governor does hope to get the opportunity to visit with the President about issues impacting South Dakota, especially ethanol and trade,” Venhuizen said [Todd Epp, “Governor, First Lady to Welcome President Trump to Sioux Falls,” KELO Radio, 2018.09.04].

Getting Donald Trump’s ear seems to be a fruitless effort: the man listens to no one but Fox News and conspiracy theorists. Perhaps Governor Daugaard could amplify the message by inviting South Dakota farmers to join him at the airport with another tractorcade to protest Trump’s short-sighted war on South Dakota agriculture.

Todd Epp reports that Republican Sioux Falls mayor Paul TenHaken does not plan to meet Trump Friday. I’d like to think marketing guru TenHaken recognizes bad optics.

Can you link us to where Daugaard said or signaled he is protesting?

  2. Darin Larson 2018-09-05 07:55

    Jason doth protest too much.

Maybe the Governor will have to take a pointer from John Oliver: to get the President’s attention, he may have to hire the Catheter Cowboy and make a commercial to air during Fox News in DC. That seems to be the only avenue for a policy discussion anymore.

HEADLINES THE PRESIDENT WON’T LIKE — “U.S. Trade Deficit Posts Biggest Increase in July Since 2015,” -WSJ

Tax cuts and higher federal spending boosted domestic demand while a cooling economy overseas hampered exports

Economists say recent U.S. policies could be helping to make the deficit larger. The fiscal stimulus passed by congressional Republicans late last year has fueled strong domestic demand, which is being partly met by increased imports. The Trump administration’s confrontational trade rhetoric and policies, meanwhile, has rattled foreign currencies as investors are spooked by rising U.S. interest rates and financial crises in Turkey and Argentina.

Porter always leaves out the good stuff.

It’s now up to Americans to buy American made products even if they cost more.

Jason, It’s now up to Americans to buy American ***** made products even if they cost more.

You accidentally left out “union” — we should buy more union made products to truly help our economy.

Porter’s Got The Good Stuff, Jace … (read ’em and weep)
-The deficit for the first seven months of the year skyrocketed to $337.88 billion, the largest in a decade.
-Deficits with China and the European Union, two targets of the president’s trade agenda, reached record highs in July as the U.S. imposed tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese imports. Imports of iron, steel and aluminum goods also rose in the first seven months of the year.
***Another factor behind the July widening. U.S. exports of soybeans FELL SHARPLY as China, by far the world’s largest buyer of the oilseed, hit them with retaliatory tariffs.

PS … Jace. I do enjoy tofu but I’m not currently in the market for a couple hundred thousand tons of soy beans. But, when I am, I’ll certainly buy American.

You guys should print out your posts and read them aloud to your wives at night. Darin, o and Portly you folks are just not wired right. . . It’s as if you think trying to bully people somehow helps your arguments.

Here is my bet; I will bet not of one of you would dare stand behind your words in public like you do here where you all act so brave. The days of being a bully are so over. Jason asked a civil questions and all of you thought you could shove him around. It no longer works folks and the problem yo have run into here is we are not afraid to call you out on the little cowards you actually are.

  10. Porter Lansing 2018-09-05 14:02

You’re projecting your bully act onto others, again. Old Soviet. You’ve become “old and in the way”.

  11. bearcreekbat 2018-09-05 14:10

I am not sure how bullying is relevant to this thread, but to the extent it is I will note that it is usually a “bully” who repeatedly calls others stupid, cowardly and other derogatory names, and it is usually a “bully” who tells people he disagrees with or people he fears that they don’t belong here and that they should leave the area or stay away. Hence Porter is dead on with his comment.

  12. o 2018-09-05 14:39

OldSarge, I think you confuse my disagreement with bullying. Not agreeing with your position does not make me a bully; nor does it mean I am “wired wrong.”

Jason’s last post asked us to pay higher costs to buy American-made products (something I believed BEFORE the President’s trade war forced the issue); I commented that in ADDITION to that, we should buy things made by American UNION workers — the drivers of the economy.

Jason, come now. The Governor named two issues on which Trump has been doing the opposite of what South Dakota farmers want: more use of ethanol and more access to foreign markets. It seems far less likely that Daugaard intends to pat Trump on the back for his performance on those two issues.

  14. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-09-05 19:55

I’m sure farmers who are losing money on corn, beans, and pork will be more than happy to pay higher prices for their groceries, tools, tractors, and other items. They’ll be paying with money they don’t have. That’s like a whole new definition of voodoo economics.

  15. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-09-05 20:00

(OS, stop distracting us. With your constant insults, you have no moral authority to act as any kind of umpire of civil discussion.)

Daugaard has an obligation to the farmers of South Dakota and other South Dakota businesses and taxpayers who depend on a strong farm economy to protest Trump’s actions on ethanol and trade and to explain to Trump the damage those actions do to South Dakota. The White House should use this trip to South Dakota to talk to real South Dakotans struggling to make ends meet under a President so reckless that members of his own Administration feel it is their patriotic duty to prevent him from enacting his dyspeptic agenda.

  16. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-09-05 20:02

O’s right: he’s bullying no one by pointing out that buying union-made goods is the fullest exercise of patriotic purchasing, doing the most good for the most Americans.

BCB is right: “bullying” is irrelevant to the core of this thread, which is that South Dakotans should pressure the Governor to give Trump heck Friday evening… especially since Trump is hiding from the general public and surrounding himself only with diehard paying customers.

It’s your blog, Cory. How do you suggest we who feel a desire to dispute OS and others who openly post and parrot the Russian influence campaign [being waged in USA by Russian operatives and influencers] react? It seems wrong to let propaganda stand undisputed. Who knows? Some young person might read it and not have the background to discern OS and Jason from real thinkers.

Storage went up on worthless crops to 35 cents per month instead of the 7 cents ratios per year….
Fertilizers, seed, and parts increased as well
That storage hike will force more sales on worthless markets….
Metal and irons have increased significantly however scrap metal, of course it’s down
Go figure…. could go on and on but we all know SD will fill the hurt on this one for awhile ,,,,,,,

  19. grudznick 2018-09-05 20:51

Mr. Lansing, you and the other out-of-staters might start by not being so much like Trump, calling people names and disrespecting them. I, for one, feel the politeness which I have instilled by causing this entire blog to call you “Mr. Lansing” and refraining from the calling of names is one step of respectfulness. I consider Mr. H, even when he is wrong, to be generally respectful. I believe we all could be more respectful of one another, else all hell will continue to erupt after Kristi is Governor and Mr. Seiler is AG.

Or, Mr. H. could ban out-of-staters. Both options are good.

  20. Porter Lansing 2018-09-05 21:08

I understand where you’re coming from, Grudz and I feel no need to defend my actions. Thanks for the honest criticism, sir. As far as being from out of state goes. When your state stinks we all smell it. Your political party won’t clean up the stench so we’ll all chip in and help America.

  21. Debbo 2018-09-05 22:02

I think it would be great if Daugard stood up to Pootie’s Puppet and directly told him how his policies are hurting SD, but I really doubt he’ll do it. Hope I’m wrong.

Even more, it would be great if the gov told the SD delegation, especially Prettyboy Johnny, to stand up to PP and exercise Congressional trade authority, thereby protecting SD’s #1 industry. Guess he hasn’t done that either.

  22. grudznick 2018-09-05 22:46

Ms. Geelsdottir, the correct spelling of the Governor of our state, not your state, is included in the title of Mr. H’s blogging. It would be polite, if not Christian, of you to at least use his correct name. I understand you must have moved to Iowa, what with all your name calling in the above post, but at least spell correctly. It will show us all you are not ignoranter than most, unless it is just your man hate that drives your drivel. I thought you were a pastor.

  23. Porter Lansing 2018-09-06 03:43

Grudz … Apparently it not just the human rights suppressing majority party that makes South Dakota politics smell. Your personality has a putrid odor that rolls across the prairie
like the back feed lot at the old Morrell’s slaughterhouse. Phew!! Be civil or be criticized.
You know how to respect a woman so use it, sir.

Mr Grunge, as for name calling, if the shoe fits wear it prowdly.

Ms Debbo has a rather large and unique vocabulary, should she choose to unleash it on right wing nut jobs. All the trouble they get is only what they deserve.

  25. Debbo 2018-09-06 12:58

I appreciate your concern Grudz. According to libel law, public officials are subject to a different standard regarding address. You’ll note that I only use the more creative names for them, not my sister and brother commenters. I shall continue in the same vein. Thank you. 😊

It is a challenge deciding how and how much to respond to Russian agitprop and other wrong-headed, dishonest efforts to derail civic discourse. I find myself writing the same things over and over in response to OldSarg’s distraction efforts. Increasingly, I want to say, “asked and answered.”

The best tack is to always turn back to the main topic presented, remind other readers that OS’s responses are a mere distraction, and re-emphasize the facts presented in the main post and the comments that OS has failed to refute.
