Georgia Schools Follow South Dakota’s Lead, Decline to Arm Teachers

Georgia’s legislature passed a law in 2014 allowing schools to arm their staff, like South Dakota’s 2013 school gunslinger law.

Guess what happened? Just like in South Dakota, no Georgia schools were stupid enough to use it:

It has been more than a year since the legislation took effect. And the Georgia School Boards Association said this week that no school district has yet decided to take it on.

“It’s a tremendous amount of liability,” adds association spokesman Justin Pauly [Greg Bluestein, “Georgia School Districts Still Say No to Arming Teachers,” Atlanta Journal Constitution, 2015.10.29].

Let’s see a little real conservativism in the 2016 Session and scrub our law books of laws no one uses. Let’s repeal SDCL Chapter 13-64, the school gunslinger laws.

According to law in Georgia, any licensed carrier could take a gun anywhere in the state unless there were specific security agreements. Looks like the schools are smarter than pols.
