Honest Discussion of Islam and Immigration in Huron Sunday at 1 p.m.

South Dakota Voices for Peace takes the hazardous step of counterprogramming the religious bigots. And instead of hiding behind out-of-state fearmongers, they get an actual Muslim South Dakotan to talk about Islam and immigration in South Dakota:

Diversity discussion, Huron, SD, 2018.04.15.

Notice too that South Dakota Voices for Peace lets us know who they are, unlike the cowardly sponsors of the Aberdeen rallies. SDVP also puts one funding source for Sunday’s Huron event right on the poster, Thrivent Financial. Let’s see if Kennith Gosch and Neal Tapio add our neighbors at Thrivent to their list of enemies of the state.

Diversity is a code word for white genocide.
Does more need to be said?

    thanks,
    Jerry

Don’t be a drama queen, Jerry. Diversity means not killing people just because they are different from you. Are you really one of those people who only wants white people who believe in a white jesus to live in the US?

  3. Roger Cornelius 2018-04-09 14:43

Jerry Hoekstra seems to be working overtime to be a victim.

“Code word for white genocide”—there’s straight-up white fright.

    And falsehood.

    And racist propaganda.

As Roger notices, people like Hoekstra, Gosch, Novstrup, and Tapio resort to outlandish statements to misrepresent themselves as the victims to avoid any discussion of doing justice for the real victims of their racism and surrendering their white privilege.

I guarantee that Taneeza Islam will not talk about stuffing Hoekstra, Gosch, Novstrup, and Tapio into gas chambers and flipping the switch. I will not propose stopping the entry of all white people into South Dakota. Exclusion is the treasonous white supremacist approach.

Real Americans believe fearlessly in diversity. Real Americans understand that America’s principles are strong enough to endure through growth and change specifically because we embrace diversity instead of trying to preserve an already lost past.

Cory, avoid the Trump trap. Pitting “Real Americans” against some other type of “Americans” seems more Trumpy than persuasive.

As it is, “America” is an interesting word. US citizens typically have used it to describe our Country, which is not exactly accurate. It overlooks the qualifier, “of,” between United States and America, acknowledging that America is greater than the United States. In fact it is the name we have given to two connected continents, not the name of any Country. Hence a person is technically an American if he or she lives anywhere on either American continent.

It seems a small point, but clarifying that we are all Americans might soften prejudice and fear of Americans from the southern continent, or Americans from parts of the northern continent other than the United States.

Otherwise, I agree with the point of everything your comment states.

These actual discussions of Islam are really interesting. It’s a fascinating religion with very strong emphasis on caring for those in need. I hope the event is well attended, especially by very silly people like Jerry Hoekstra. (I thought he was making a joke at first! How embarrassing for him.)

  7. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-04-10 10:42

BCB, I understand your caution on our small but reasonable point of disagreement, but are we to close ourselves off from co-opting and using against our opponents their own language? If someone says to me, “If you were a real American, you wouldn’t…,” am I allowed to say, “Real American? Let me tell you what ‘Real American’ values look like”?

Debbo, alas, Hoekstra is not joking. He’s embarrassing all of us.

  8. bearcreekbat 2018-04-10 15:24

Arguing about what constitutes a “Real American” seems fruitless to me, but you surely are allowed to make such an argument if you so desire. But do you think such an argument is as effective as simply focusing directly on the values you want to endorse?

  9. Roger Cornelius 2018-04-10 16:03

    bear
“Real Americans” has become like “fake news”, it is overused and abused to the point that is meaningless.
Am I more of a “Real American” because of Native American ancestry that can be traced back to before this country was settled. Or, am I a “Real American” because I thoroughly understand government and politics and what the Constitution actually means?
Arguing about whether or not some is a “Real American” does not shape government and policy for our country, it only divides.

This was my favorite part: “It’s a fascinating religion with very strong emphasis on caring for those in need.”

  11. Roger Cornelius 2018-04-10 16:10

That is my favorite part as well.

What makes me believe OS and Roger’s similar comments were made – one in jest, the other sincerely?

  13. OldSarg 2018-04-10 17:21

Here’s what I really like: All your media gods are calling for more war in Syria to kill the very people you all claim is “a fascinating religion with very strong emphasis on caring for those in need.”

I guess I’m just confused. . . You all want to kill them over there but to bring those same people you want to kill here? Just confused. . . So which is it; Do you want to kill them or save them?

  14. Roger Cornelius 2018-04-10 17:35

Yes, you are confused, Beatle Bailey, Trump is at the helm and looking for a way to deflect from the Mueller and Stormy Daniels story. I don’t believe for one damn minute that Trump has the best interests of the Syrians in mind.
Again Beatle puts all Muslims and Islamist in the same category and creates a false either or situation, it doesn’t have be that way.
American Christians kill more American Christians everyday than any attacks like 9/11 or other terrorist attacks.
Quite frankly I fear Trump’s Neo-Nazi and KKK members more than I would ever fear a Muslim.

At one point in my life I was a practicing research ecologist. One of the basic concepts of ecology is “diversity,” defined in various mathematical ways, but usually boiling down to how many species in how much biomass occupy a given area of the ecosystem. Generally, it has been found that the more diverse an area is the more productive and the more “stable” to perturbation it is. I’ve linked a paper describing some aspects of biological diversity:

    https://www.nature.com/scitable/knowledge/library/disturbance-and-diversity-an-ecological-chicken-and-13256228

I’ve always wondered if there is any sociological or demographic research on a concept of diversity in human cultures. Of course, race and ethnicity aren’t the same as species, so there is that difference. And, really, human cultures are extremely changeable, and much that is good or helpful in one culture is copied by another and improved upon.

Still, it seems to me the most economically productive areas of the United States are those with the most diversity in races and cultures. And these areas seem to be, at least since the civil rights era, most able to face the frictions that racial and ethnic diversity do, at times, bring to those areas.

If you go into the back of many restaurants in the US, you will hear music played by Mexicans, except much of it sounds a hell of a lot like the polkas you can hear in the most white communities of South Dakota. It turns out that accordion-like instruments were taken up by different folks in different areas and cultures, Creole, Mexican borderlands, Midwestern polka bands. Convergent evolution in culture?

    You be right.

  17. mike from iowa 2018-04-10 18:01

So Drumpf has dreamed up a way he can fire Mueller. Not according to Special Counsel rules only the AG can do that and I don’t think Sessions has the guts to do it.

We might just see the newest and worst constitutional crisis come to head if we invade Syria w/o UN approval, engage Russia and Iranian forces there and fire Mueller at the same time. Then there is the little problem of Drumpf boys trying to shake down the pres of Panama to save a Drumpt hotel from its rightful owner. Oh brother.

  18. mike from iowa 2018-04-10 18:17

Speaking of biological diversity, for the first time any one can remember there is an eagle’s nest in Highland Township, Obrien County, iowa. It is in the midst of a forest of wind turbines and is active. It is within 6 miles of my place and the eagles make free with dead confinement pigs for sustenance.

  19. Roger Cornelius 2018-04-10 18:29

    mike from iowa
A note to clarify about firing Mueller, Sessions has recused himself from the Russian investigation and by doing so has no authority to fire Mueller. Trump will have to turn to Assistant AG Rosenstein and force him to fire Mueller, which is up in the air as to whether Rosenstein will do it or not. Rosenstein is damned if does and damned if he doesn’t.

  20. OldSarg 2018-04-10 18:36

IDIOT ALERT! “American Christians kill more American Christians everyday than any attacks like 9/11 or other terrorist attacks.”

  21. mike from iowa 2018-04-10 18:43

Thanks for that, Roger. I see the OS we all know and love finally showed up and is calling hizownself names now.

It is painfully obvious that Beatle Bailey is the Idiot, it is a fact that Americans (mostly likely Christians) like more Americans than any else.

  23. Jenny 2018-04-10 19:59

Does Jerry H really believe that about diversity?

  24. Debbo 2018-04-10 21:27

Since 9/11 white male Christian Americans have killed many more Americans than any other group. They are far, far more murderous than any immigrants of color. America’s terrorists are white males.

  25. jerry 2018-04-11 10:25

From what we have seen regarding hate speech, the one who is the most vocal is 9 times out of 10, the closeted one. I think that this more than proves that Jerry Hoekstra has a Muslim heritage. Let us exam his long form birth papers to include prior to the immigration from the Netherlands. I think we may find that there entrance might be not so clean, or that the flock may have been family, if you know what I mean. Check it out: https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/erpr/hd_erpr.htm

Period 1600-1800: “At the beginning of this period, the European presence in the Islamic world was largely based on trade. Dutch, French, English, and Portuguese merchants first arrived in the late fifteenth century, attracted by the wealth that could be acquired in exporting luxury items to the European market, and encouraged by the Mughal and Safavid governments, which desired trade partners to stimulate the economy. Diplomatic ties later officially cemented these partnerships.” Imagine that Jerry Hoekstra, you do know that there are white Muslims, correct?
