South Dakota Senate Inviting Trump to Black Hills for Fourth of July

Speaking of Al Novstrup’s likeness to Donald Trump, my District 3 Senator has signed on to Senate Concurrent Resolution 1, a gentle call for more political tourism. What does Al want? President Trump in South Dakota for the Fourth of July:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Senate of the Ninety-Second Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the South Dakota Legislature hereby invites President Donald J. Trump to visit the great State of South Dakota and to spend time in the Black Hills viewing Mount Rushmore, America’s shrine of democracy, and the emerging carving of Crazy Horse; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the South Dakota Legislature hereby encourages Governor Dennis Daugaard, United States Senator John Thune, United States Senator Mike Rounds, United States Representative Kristi Noem and their staffs to promote such a visit and to suggest that it would be particularly appropriate for the visit to take place on or near the fourth of July [SCR 1, introduced 2017.01.20].

Novstrup is one of 24 Republicans sponsoring this resolution. Heck, I’d urge every legislator to sign on… and add an amendment to bring Trump to Aberdeen so I can interview him!

Imaginary Tweet from Donald Trump on visit to South Dakota
Mr. President, over here!

But quick check: over the last eight years, I don’t see any House or Senate resolution inviting President Barack H. Obama to visit South Dakota. In 2009, Novstrup was willing to vote for Representative Bernie Hunhoff’s resolution congratulating President Obama and resolving to “work in a spirit of bipartisanship and cooperation for the benefit of South Dakota and all of America.”

The Legislature makes up for lost time by filing this resolution during the first hours of the Trump Administration on the the calendar for a vote tomorrow (Monday, January 23—Senate convenes at 2 p.m., leads off with SCR 1).

It’s good to see the South Dakota Legislature has its prejpriorities in order.

Now that there is an old white racist back in the White House, all is right with SD Republicans. I’ll make it a point to miss the liar in chief if he graces us with his orangeness.

Wait til Drumpf’s grope toy in chief-Ivanka sends the Drumpf itinerary AND the bill for Drumpf to waste a half hour explaining to the sculpted heads how great Drumpf is and how those same sculpted heads should fall on their asses in acknowledgement of that greatness.

See, I think Trump ought to see other sites that the federal government has been involved in in order to see the good and bad impact the federal government can have on a state like South Dakota.

Among the sites I would think he might want to see are the current and former Superfund Sites resulting from improper regulation. He could visit, for example, the Whitewood Creek area and the Gilt Edge Mine, to learn how cutting regulation might actually cost more in the long run. He could also learn about how foreign-controlled mining outfits, like Brohm Mining, absconded with all the profits from mining on federal land, while leaving US taxpayers with the costs of cleaning it up because Republicans have ended the fees that polluters used to pay to fund the Superfund. He also could view the area around Edgemont where US taxpayers funded a cleanup of old uranium tailings.

He might want to tour some of the hundreds of unreclaimed uranium mines on federal lands. He might want to look at the Williams Pipeline facilities in Sioux Falls, which was cleaned up under the Superfund program.

A look at some of the spill sites along the Keystone pipeline route might educate him about the dangers of improperly siting and regulating such infrastructure. He could view Lake Oahe to see how creation of that lake buried tribal and farm lands, but which provided a source for water for tribes, and farms and towns in much of South Dakota. He could view the former bombing range on the Pine Ridge Reservation, which took the military years to clean up. He could see the former Black Hills Ordnance Depot, which has several areas that still haven’t been thoroughly cleaned up.

He could view the old Pathfinder Plant near Brandon to see how the government wasted money on subsidizing nuclear power.

One place I hope we can cross off the list of Trump’s vacation here is the deep borehole disposal test area in Haakon County. Hopefully, Trump will end that boondoggle that was a pet project of Obama’s energy secretary.

    Access to PresidentTrump isn’t free.

  5. Don Coyote 2017-01-22 22:43

Neither was access to Obama or the Clinton’s

I think I would be slightly worried about massive protests at Mount Rushmore if there was a Trump invitation. If you want to take that chance go right ahead. The times are a changing and so will South Dakota.

  7. caheidelberger Post author | 2017-01-23 07:13

Jon H, if he comes, there will be protest, and I will be thrilled to go cover them!

  8. Mike Boswell 2017-01-23 07:29

Why wouldn’t you take the High Ground like what happened in Watertown SD for Obama’s visit? You can respect the position if you can’t respect the man. Watertown did a great job for Obama’s visit. My great nephew got to talk to the President and received a gift. You can remain classy and not agree. Cory maybe think on that for awhile.

  9. Darin Larson 2017-01-23 07:56

Mike Boswell says, “Why wouldn’t you take the High Ground like what happened in Watertown SD for Obama’s visit?”

Mike, go on Facebook and search for the stories on President Obama coming to Watertown and then look at the vile comments. Tell me again about the High Ground that was taken.

Donald Pay, Drumpf doesn’t need to see anything because he is smarter than nukular scientists and generals and intelligence officials and tax attorneys. Just ask him.

I think Snott Wanker of Wisconsin has been whispering ideas into Drumpf’s animal pelt he wears on his head.

Boswell, did you read my blog post, or are you responding to the strawman blog post you imagined? In my original post, I urged every legislator to sign on. I’d love for Trump to visit South Dakota (and spend a truckload of money while he’s here and drive a bunch of press that draws tourists). How does that statement draw your comment taking the high road and showing class?

  12. Craig 2017-01-23 08:39

I would argue the Senate is making a mistake by extending the invitation. Trump would likely enjoy the photo-op of him making a speech in front of Mt. Rushmore, but we know this would mobilize and encourage protesters who would see this as a prime opportunity to challenge the President’s policies and positions in a Federal Park where they couldn’t be turned away.

Do we really want the public to see massive protests in front of one of our nation’s most patriotic symbols? Do we want that associated with our state? Do we want to risk headlines speaking of arrests or acts of violence?

Besides – if Trump was invited he would likely use part of his speech explaining how much smarter and better and “bigly” he is than the four Presidents depicted on Mt. Rushmore and then he would probably ask one of his aides what it would take to get his image carved alongside Lincoln. Although come to think of it, I’m not sure there is enough mountain left to contain Trump’s ego.

Comments no FB didn’t translate to the streets.

  14. Darin Larson 2017-01-23 09:03

So protesting peacefully in public places is not taking the high road, but vile comments on FB is taking the high road?

  15. Bob Kolbe 2017-01-23 09:46

    Curious
What is the cost of POTUS visit
    To State
    To County
    To City(s)

    Will Legeature pick up tab?

  16. Mike Boswell 2017-01-23 10:14

Darin what I said that during President Obama’s visit to Watertown SD, the public reacted in a very classy way and you didn’t see the vile comments on FB translated into the streets. We respected the position if we couldn’t respect the man. It looked good on the NE section of the State. I also got to hear how delighted my Great Nephew was to meet the President of the United States. Something I also cherish as a fond memory of shaking the hand of Jimmy Carter on the White House Lawn many decades ago.

  17. Mike Boswell 2017-01-23 10:19

Cory, liberals use Strawman as a different form of name calling. But you said you will thrilled to cover the protest. You’re like a hound on a blood trail to find something to get your barb into Conservatives. Well that’s fine. Why not cover the cheering crowds as well?

  18. Troy 2017-01-23 10:31

No matter my disagreement with President Obama, I would never have dreamt to be ANYTHING but a good host to our guest.

There is a time to protest and speak out about that upon which we disagree and a time to respect that upon which we agree.

  19. jerry 2017-01-23 10:32

South Dakota, be careful what you ask for. The days to 4th of July are many in political terms, much like dog years. The no jobs crowd may be out in full force to show that democracy is just another word for nothing left to loose if these jobs do not materialize fast. Punkin head has just signed the final nail in TPP as it was already a dead man walking, so this is symbolic only. Still no word on the jobs promised though. Employment is not a strawman. Where are the jobs?? When will they appear??

  20. SweetPea 2017-01-23 11:23

OH NO!! He will want his “Stupid ORANGE face” up there with those “Great” former presidents!!!!!!! Arrrrrrgh!

  21. Roger Cornelius 2017-01-23 12:28

The republican held House is considering making many peaceful protests illegal.
Another shot at limiting our First Amendment Rights.

  22. leslie 2017-01-23 18:22

Mayor Allender could cozy up to Trump and get law enforcement assistance with panhandlers, homeless, drunk and drug addicted [you could add mentally ill] people whom are victims of government violated treaties.

Allender coarsely says “We move that Mission, we move the Hope Center and WE get THEM outside downtown….we …start rehabbing these guys instead of sheltering them….this is …a Native American issue….not CRAZY WHITE PEOPLE…not Mexicans…not all women or men…the only pattern is that they are all Native American.”
    (my emphasis). RCJ today

I note the number of white homeless murderers in prison now.

White people broke it. White people bought it. Right? but our mayor whines…”where are Native American leaders???” Maybe fighting White Clay? Maybe getting beaten up in Cannon Ball to ND white Legislative/law enforcement standing ovation? Read some history. One republican hip shooter in the nation is enough.

  23. jerry 2017-01-23 18:39

leslie, I am sure you noticed that they want more police, this after sending them to North Dakota for protection muscle for the oil company. Rapid City and South Dakota taxpayers are gonna be in for sticker shock sooner than later.

Boswell, have you ever read the articles I write when I cover events and interview people? See, for instance, my coverage of the Bollen court hearings. I can do remarkable, balanced journalism, giving just the facts of what I see and hear.

If the President of the United States visits South Dakota, if I can attend, I’ll give you the best political coverage you’ll read in this state. If the White House allows me to interview the President, I guarantee I’ll give you an outstanding report of what the President said. I’ll show the crowds of cheering patriots standing for democracy outside the rally as well as the bigots, racists, and fascists cheering Il Duce. ;-)

  25. Mike Boswell 2017-01-23 20:22

I have and the bottom attempt at humor is what I have seen.

  26. caheidelberger Post author | 2017-01-23 21:01

Well then tough shiskey, Boswell. What you imagine is blinding you to some pretty good writing. Bring on Trump: I’ll cover the protests, the rally, and interview the fascist himself, if he’ll face me.

  27. Donald Pay 2017-01-23 22:27

    Mike from Iowa,

Lots of similarities between Walker and Trump on policy and the “alternative facts” machine. Walker pioneered the whole put out lies as “alternative facts” strategy, and with Preibus in the White House, I expect to see that strategy continue. Walker, though, is a much better liar. Walker has the choirboy look, a soft, reasoning voice and a flat affect when he’s lying. He gently sets his lies on a bed of reasonableness, making his lies harder to deal with politically. Trump’s and Spicer’s bombastic behavior and over the top rhetoric is not suited for good lying. It’s too easy to spot.

  28. Thomas 2017-01-27 23:40

We the American Indian Movement grassroots do not welcome the racist U.S. greedy President Donald Trump into our treaty territory the sacred black hills, therefore South Dakota Senate if you wanna meet Donald Trump do not bring him into the black hills because will make our stand against him when you use our relative’s name crazy horse to take him into black hills. We don’t welcome Donald Trump in our territory!!!

  29. Porter Lansing 2017-01-28 10:07

Hear, hear, Thomas. Black Hills aren’t South Dakota’s prostitute to use to attract political favors.
