Rectifying Racist Vulgarity on the Mean Streets of Aberdeen

One of my racist Aberdeen neighbors is driving around with this Republican projection on his wastefully noisy truck:

Racist, lying truck decals; Aberdeen, SD, 2021.05.08.
Racist, lying truck decals; Aberdeen, SD, 2021.05.08.

Predictably, this yokel pairs his full-frontal vulgarity with a racist Blue Lives Matter decal on the back:

Blue Lives Matter decal, highlighted among other things blocking this man’s view, Aberdeen, SD, 2021.05.08.

I’m a good neighbor, so here, let me fix that front end for you, Matt Gaetz:

Truck decal revised for GOP accuracy.

Love thy neighbor….

    Good one Cory!!!!

  2. Tim H

    Slander much Cory?

  3. Get off it, Tim. You understand neither the meaning of the word you use nor the point I am making… although if you want to go there, do you accuse the truck owner who put up that vulgar decal guilty of slander as well, not to mention racism? Why, Tim would you be more interested in talking about me than about the indecent, racist, and false message this truck owner puts on the streets in front of children?

  4. Arlo Blundt

Well…we have them in my town too…The whole Trump thing has given otherwise very socially awkward, inarticulate people a platform for social acceptance by a significant group of peers (significant to them, at least). For some folks, their truck is their public personna, and a very important part of their life. The fella in my town has a Trump Flag flying from the back of his truck bed with the legend, “2024 The Last Stand”. It’s gonna get nuts.

  5. Don’t worry Cory, those conned trumpies are everywhere. It will be fun to see them continue to lose and believe they won. It’s a glorious experience.

  6. james

Here in Sioux Falls too. Obnoxious anti-immigrant decals on a few pickups. You are exactly right, Arlo. Trump has made them think it’s cool to be an a***ole.

  7. Republicans are supposed to be the party of family values. Why would a decent person fly such a vulgar message in the faces of children?

  8. DaveFN

Perhaps fewer here in Rapid City. ‘Redneck” seems to take a somewhat different form west river than it does east, if I over-generalize.

The societal effects aside, which is impossible, of course, I have to ask what this kind—or any kind, for that matter—of identity signaling does for the individual on the subjective level. There is, of course, no single answer as what it does from person to person is highly variable and ultimately unique in both function and its accretion over time. Few are in touch with themselves enough to grasp the highly unique function their behaviors serve, although that doesn’t keep anyone from rationalizing them.

  9. So if 2024 is the last stand, can we survive it, reëlect Biden+Harris, and then count on the new generation to vote for decency for the rest of the century and consign the yahoos to permanent minority?

  10. I like the fact that they advertise their ignorance. You know immediately never to hire them. Its easier than having to look up their political affiliation you know. I’ve changed shops from signs on worker cars, usually raised pickups that they can barely afford, its easy and fun to do. I know that would be harder to do in South Dakota. That goes back to an old friend of mine Larry Hamlin who had a teaching job at the old school in Plankington, yes that school. He had to go to a bar downtown that had a no Indians allowed sign up front, but it was the only bar in town, so there you go.

  11. Arlo Blundt

Well..Mark, you may remember the framed picture of George Wallace that hung above the cash register in Carey’s Bar in Vermillion. Joe Carey couldn’t stand Hippies, but they flocked to the place for the cheap beer and Joe;’s wife’s pickled eggs (10 cents)..Joe was never one to turn down a buck, regardless of the source, but if anything political was said, he’s slap the bar and with his index finger raised, point to the picture of George Wallace. Any further comment and you were banished from the bar…a fate worse than death.

  12. Arlo Blundt

OOPs…did I say Joe Carey…Joe could care less. Russ was the owner and political maven. Joe waited tables and kept the beer comin. Neither said much.

  13. Hey Arlo, my brother in law worked at Careys and I did drink there, alot actually. I walked into that place 20 years after I graduated and it was exactly the same. A long haired bartender and rolling stones playing on the jukebox, same stuff on the walls. Hippies made that place work, although it was hard to play pool there I remember.

  14. Arlo Blundt

In my day, no pool table, no juke box, just the bowling machine (with a large sign, NO Hard Bowling-if you did you were banished)..and certainly no Hippies behind the bar…no one except Russ, Joe and George Wallace…they closed at midnite, no matter how many people were in the bar. Paul Micheals bought it after the Carey Brothers ran into health problems. He kept the Careys atmosphere, but loosened up the social mores. He did keep the George Wallace picture and the list of people who had bounced checks over the past twenty years. Bounce one and you never wrote another.

  15. Richard Schriever

I know quite a few people who were banned from Carey’s. A few of them made it a point to go back once the brothers no longer were in attendance.

  16. Steve H

“Republicans are supposed to be the party of family values. Why would a decent person fly such a vulgar message in the faces of children?”

Well Cory….I thought liberals were supposed to be the understanding and tolerant. Why would a high school teacher who claims to be a liberal verbally and physically attack a student? You know, grab him by the collar and punch him in the head a couple of times in front of other students? Would you know anything about a certain teacher who did that?

Those who live in glass houses…..

  17. bearcreekbat

We went to look at a home for sale in Spearfish a week ago or so. The next door neighbor apparently had fun painting the side of his garage with two large words (about 10′ high or so per word with black lettering) stacked on top of each other reading “F…ck Biden.” I imagine it could be seen from an airplane. We turned around and left without even looking at the advertised home for sale.

  18. Porter Lansing

You don’t see this stuff in Colorado. Know why? Your pissant, flathead connies ain’t got the nuts to disrespect Black men when Black men are around.
    – Drive-by’s solve problems.

  19. leslie

My guess is he was a republican then. Brothers steve and tim higgins, as you previously identified yourselves.

  20. Richard Schriever

Gee Steve, why would a school superintendent (native of White River – wore cowboy boots with his suit and tie) in Lennox, SD in the late 60’s pick a kid up by the throat, pin him against a wall in the hallway in front of al the other students, and tell him to get a G D haircut or he’d do it for him? Think that “educator” was a liberal??

  21. Steve, now you lie to deflect from the real issue here, which is public vulgarity and lies about the President. By trying to change the subject to your narrow, atrophied obsessions, you tacitly endorse the bad behavior of the owner of the depicted pickup truck.

Do you, Steve, endorse driving around town with vulgar lies?

  22. Korey, no there did not appear to be any license plate on the front bumper. To quote the law you cite, the owner of this pickup appears to be operating “a motor vehicle on the public highways of this state” without “two number plates, bearing the number conspicuously displayed, horizontally and in an upright position, one on the front and one on the rear of the vehicle, each securely fastened.”

So lying, vulgar, and illegal—yup, that’s the Republican Party’s base.

  23. John, I have not seen this particular vehicle swerving down the streets. But then I don’t go out and watch much traffic after happy hour.

  24. I predict this will blow-back .. yikes, man. Do you feel your forces are truly legion or something? :)

  25. I’ve seen some blurred pictures of Hunter Biden abusing minor children.

So, I wouldn’t say he likes them exactly.

But he does seem to require them .. sick.

  26. Jake

I guess if it weren’t for the John Dales and Hickey likes the former fatso that held the White House wouldn’t have any spokespeople or base….

  27. Steve Hickey

Steve H is not me, former Dist 9 State Rep, friend of all things good. Wish this bloke would pick a different designation for himself.

  28. Porter Lansing

He’s not Hickey but he’s a near clone of Hickey, in that both believe they understand we liberal’s motives.
Both are clueless purveyors of false information, continually.

  29. mike from iowa

I had hoped magats had had enough fake Hunter Biden baloney to last a lifetime, but some are content to bring it up on a regular basis, just asking to be sued for libel/slander because they have no proof of what they push onto the public.

  30. grudznick

I was afraid this would happen. We have at least three grudznicks running around, and now we have 2 Hickeys. I would encourage those of you against overgodding to not jump on the Hickey bandwagon.

  31. ds

Well you would have to agree that a President that restores SNAP food assistance, works for expanded Medicare coverage, reverses punitive and cruel child immigration policies, and provides much needed family income to children…indeed President Biden DOES LOVE MINORS!

  32. Steve H (not Hickey)

In the past, you have pointed out to me, through e-mail, that the DFP is your blog, you own it, you determine what is and what isn’t posted, you determine what is and isn’t deleted, you own the content of your blog and if I don’t like it, I can start my own. Remember? Fare enough, no problem.

With that being said, I will answer your question with a question (CAH – “Do you, Steve, endorse driving around town with vulgar lies?”). Instead of the name Biden, what if we substitute with the name of Reagan, Bush, Trump, or how about this one….Kristi Noem? Would you be as equally “outraged” as you are now and posting about it? Let’s be honest here……No, you wouldn’t. Would you endorse someone driving around town with any one of those names substituted? You wouldn’t have a problem with it. And to be fair, I’m not offended by his decal and if I did see a vehicle with the same decal but with one of the aforementioned names, I would at most give pause and think, “Well, there’s another idiot with a driver’s license.” And let it go at that.

You have such “moral outrage” about what this guy has on his truck, but what about the content of your own blog (see my first sentence)? If I recall correctly, you were at one time not too long ago, called out by your fellow democrats for what they felt was crossing the line concerning the choice of words used in your criticism of some Republican women. One of your regulars has posted the wish for Governor Noem, as well as other Republican leaders, to just hurry up and get COVID and die. Others in your fan club have expressed joy at the passing of political conservatives. And even in this very thread there is an individual who is endorsing violence…”Drive-by’s solve problems”. A crime that quite often results in innocent bystanders getting injured or killed who have nothing to do with the shooter or target. A crime that takes place as a result of gang activity more often in minority communities…..and only Republicans are racist? I find these statements, which you are tacitly endorsing by your silence, much more offensive than “Biden Loves Minors”.

You, Cory, use this blog with the assistance of your fan club, as a means to bully and ridicule anyone who doesn’t agree with you, i.e. the owner of this truck. And as far as deflection, you are the king of deflection that most readers of your blog don’t even see or are aware that you are doing…..you delete posts/rebuttals that are inconvenient for you to let stand. You’ve done it to me, and you have done it to others.

Hey, this is your blog, do what you want, but you are very disingenuous.

  33. Porter Lansing

40,000 liberal “headmen” couldn’t make him change his mind …

Cory living “rent free” in the painful brain known only as Steve H. (not Hickey)

  34. Steve, I wish you were Pastor Hickey. He does a much better job of getting past petty personal arguments and falls into much less moral hypocrisy. He’d rather indict my character and whine about my editorial policies than address plain public lying and vulgarity.

Plus, Steve fabricates a hypothetical to win an argument that he can’t win on the plain facts.

A decal like this would only have a shot at being acceptable if it were true—e.g., if it said, “GAETZ LOVES MINORS”—and even then, it would remain vulgar and excessive. I do not write “NOEM LOVES MINORS” on this blog or any other public space because it is a gratuitous lie that offends public sensibility.

The main point to derive from Steve’s comment is that Steve is so hell-bent on portraying me and anyone who supports my work as a moral failure that he is willing to defend (“I’m not offended by his decal”) immoral behavior, not by silence, but explicitly, with a strained argument that misportrays speech with which he disagrees and arguments that he cannot refute with facts as cause for moral outrage.

Republicans defend sin within their ranks and falsely project those sins on others.

I defend no sin in my ranks, and I identify the plain moral failings of radical Noem-basers like this truck owner with his public display of immorality and hypocrisy.

  35. leslie

I don’t kno nor care whether the steve/tim show are hicky or higgins, but they are definitely republican shills like grdz and dale, and others who push greed and racism and disinformation.

I push three ideas, that the republic party is dead or in a death spiral, that economic inequality is a primary driver of its death, and climate change, which republicans deny, is the existential crisis facing the human race.

Today economic inequality is the focus. (I think it may be ego.)

In a capitalist system like ours, “income and wealth distribution are really where the rubber hits the road….corporations actually have gotten a lot better on things like affirmative action, inclusion, gay rights…but they haven’t gotten good at distributing their money to the poor. That’s really the thing that separates the corporate mentality from a more progressive outlook….

[Historically] SCOTUS… required every state, every locality to come up with a way to find lawyers for all poor defendants as a constitutional right.
Then throughout the ‘60s, they strike down the poll tax and say that that discriminates against poor people who want to vote….if welfare authorities heard rumor that a mother had a boyfriend—that would be enough to throw the children and the mother off of the welfare rolls. The Supreme Court strikes that down….suggesting that the court might actually say that people in poverty are a suspect classification.

We have this Warren court, and it’s chugging along doing some of the great stuff ….Then Nixon’s elected with this vow to really undo the court. And just by a little bit of luck and a lot of scheming, he gets to appoint four justices in three years…one of the key moments in the court’s history is Nixon driving Abe Fortas off the court. Fortas was not an angel by any means….[Then] the court came within one vote of saying that school funding in every state in the country had to be equal; we couldn’t fund rich school districts more than poor school districts. That was 5–4…that fifth liberal vote would have been there to give poor kids all across America a better start in life…one of the great tragedies in history.” The catalyst for a court that goes on to enrich the wealthy. The difference between Dems and Republicans! This autocracy we have now. Slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/03/supreme-court-poverty-income-inequality.amp?__twitter_impression=true

Fascinating link about the SCOTUS – Thanks leslie. Just like under Nixon, the anti-poor, anti-civil rights, anti-vote/democracy, pro-grift factions of our political world sure got lucky again under Trump with three vacancies. Looks like the non-wealthy majority of people in our country could be in for a some difficult years down the road if the current Congress doesn’t balance the Court by adding justices.

Steve H mentions my post above regarding my wish that Kristi Noem’s death by Covid would come quickly. Let’s put that in context for those who like to twist facts (um, that’s you, Steve H.)

Noem’s failures of leadership led to the deaths of many South Dakotans and others. Example: Noem’s failure to shut down the Sturgis rally led to the late summer spike that killed thousands all across the United States. I look at her death as I would the classic thought experiment regarding the trolley dilemma (see link below). I could put it in terms of whether you would be justified to kill HItler in order to save 6 million who died in gas chambers and mass firing squads. Of course, if you killed Hitler, there might have been some mini-Hitler out there who would have carried on the slaughter, and the same goes for Larry Rhoden. However, you can always hope that there is someone less evil or less incompetent who is next in line.

I was nervous to be trampling in poverty law! Can we adjust SCOTUS? I note Dem Randy Seiler has optimism for progress in SD. Aberdeen News

On global warming, youth is confronting Standard Chartered, Europe’s largest financier of coal plant developers, analysis shows. Between October 2018 and October 2020, it supported the coal industry with $10 billion, of which about half went to coal plant developers.

    @grantstern
While everyone’s discussing House GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger comparing his party to the Titanic, it would be helpful to note that that is EXACTLY what Trump’s team played during the January 6th Stop the Steal rally that precipitated the MAGA Insurrection.

The rear decal in Cory’s photo is the “Punisher”, the patch zip tie guy, the young Nashville bartender wore on his kevlar militia vest crawling around the Senate balcony, armed w/a taser and walking on chairs I once sat in. He was there with his mom and wanted Federal prison release to visit her Sunday! Other pics show him brandishing sawed off shotguns in front of Trump screens and the M-4 auto military version of an AR15 (the dozen modified assault rifles with high capacity magazines the Las Vegas shooter used to fire 1000 rounds into a country music concert crowd in 10 minutes).

To quote the hilarious Demetri Martin:

“A lot of people don’t like bumper stickers. I don’t mind bumper stickers. To me a bumper sticker is a shortcut. It’s like a little sign that says ‘Hey, let’s never hang out.'”

  40. leslie

As said above: I push three ideas, that the republic party is dead or in a death spiral….”

“A group of more than 100 influential Republicans and others plan to release a call for reforms within the GOP and a threat to form a new party if change isn’t forthcoming, according to a person familiar with the effort.” MSNBC
