Thunberg Pricks Global Conscience; US “Leader” Ignorant, Insulting, Irrelevant

Why are some people so willing to insult a sixteen-year-old girl who can articulately and passionately address the United Nations in her second language about an existential threat to the planet? In part, it’s denial

Part of the reason she inspires such rage, of course, is blindingly obvious. Climate change is terrifying. The Amazon is burning. So too is the Savannah. Parts of the Arctic are on fire. Sea levels are rising. There are more vicious storms and wildfires and droughts and floods. Denial is easier than confronting the terrifying truth [Jennifer O’Connell, “Why Is Greta Thunberg So Triggering for Certain Men?The Irish Times, 2019.09.07].

…and fear of democracy driven by the sensible, scientific masses:

Why is Greta Thunberg so triggering? Because of what she represents. In an age when democracy is under assault, she hints at the emergency of new kind of power, a convergence of youth, popular protest and irrefutable science. And for her loudest detractors, she also represents something else: the sight of their impending obsolescence hurtling towards them [O’Connell, 2019.09.07].

Greta Thunberg spoke plain truth to the United Nations yesterday, Here’s her call on us grown-ups to save her planet and her future:

This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you?

You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words, and yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering, people are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you?

For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you’re doing enough when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight? You say you hear us and that you understand the urgency, but no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that. Because if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act, then you would be evil and that I refuse to believe.

The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in ten years only gives us a 50 percent chance of staying below 1.5 degrees and the risk of setting up irreversible chain reactions beyond human control. Fifty percent may be acceptable to you, but those numbers do not include tipping points most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution, or the aspects of equity and climate justice.

They also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist. So a 50 percent risk is simply not acceptable to us. We who have to live with the consequences. To have a 67 percent chance of staying below the 1.5 degree of temperature rise, the best odds given by the IPCC, the world had 420 gigatons of CO2 left to emit back on January 1, 2018.

Today that figure is already down to less than 350 gigatons. How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just business as usual and some technical solutions? With today’s emissions levels, that remaining CO2 that entire budget will be gone is less than 8 and a half years. There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today because these numbers are too uncomfortable and you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.

You are failing us, but young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say we will never forgive you. We will not let you get away with this, right here, right now, is where we draw the line. The world is waking up, and change is coming whether you like it or not [Greta Thunberg, speech to United Nations Climate Action Summit, New York City, 2019.09.23].

In addition to listening to Thunberg’s speech, world leaders spent over eight hours presenting specific plans for reducing the greenhouse emissions that are wrecking Thunberg’s future.

Meanwhile, the purported leader of the free world made a token appearance for fourteen minutes, left for a revival meeting that he arranged himself to solicit hosannahs from “Christians”, then responded to Thunberg with thoughtless sarcasm:

Donald Trump, tweet, 2019.09.23 23:36 EDT
Donald Trump, tweet, 2019.09.23 23:36 EDT

Indeed, how dare we elect such an ignorant brute when our children’s world needs fixing?

This seems like child abuse to me. I read she is Autistic. Back in 1987, the same types of predictions were made .. the Earth is very resilient and fluctuates wildly in temperature.

My own personal belief is that we should clean up after ourselves, and if given a chance at the help of a major corporation to make a difference, I would do my best toward that end.

Children should be engaged with the system early, but this young lady seems to have been thrust into a position that is radically less dangerous than, say, 5G, which will be pushed as a way to force compliance with green mandates.

If she was railing against 5G, I might actually understand the urgency since it can be biometrically targeted to fry out clusters of neurology to affect/change human behavior and even kill.

This poor young lady has been made a tool for a political cause .. but that on the face of it is not that bad. She’s been terrified in the process .. that to me just doesn’t seem right.

  2. o 2019-09-24 11:18

John, as a climate denier and corporate apologist, the only political tool on display here is you. For one who has spoken so fervently for the right to life of the unborn, I would think the preservation of the very environmental which those young will live would be as important as ensuring their delivery into that environment.

  3. mike from iowa 2019-09-24 11:21

sending treatable sick and terminally ill legal immigrants back home to die is child abuse, practiced by Drumpf and his phony kristians in the wingnut party.

Drumpf acts like a spoiled brat so I doubt even an extremely intelligent, extremely knowledgeable teen from Sweden will be able to penetrate a heart and brain made of concrete.

  4. John Dale 2019-09-24 11:46

mike from iowa – predictably, you select a conclusion, then work into it with unstated questionable assumptions like “it is America’s fault people make the journey northward”.

Then, right on queue, o enters stage right with a straw man personal attack, “climate denier and corporate apologist”.

My question, is where’s Curly? “Hey Moe, nyuk nyuk nyuk.”

Somebody recently wrote that you guys should define the SD Democratic platform. That might work, but you’ll need more banana creme pies.

  5. mike from iowa 2019-09-24 11:59

5G is a red herring, so say many many people smarter than Johnny fraud.

  6. John Dale 2019-09-24 12:05

mike from iowa – “red herring”

Then I’m sure they wouldn’t mind coming on my show to debate it.

You can find my Internet Radio Broadcast here:
    https://PlainsTribune.com

Send me a single credible 5G public safety study and I’ll stop talking about it.

Alternatively, find me a single insurance company with a policy for 5G.

  7. o 2019-09-24 12:10

John, my indictment of your political dogma overriding science and consistency on the issue of climate is neither straw-man (it is not an argument constructed to knock down – is is central and sincere to evaluating your position) nor ad hominem (it is an evaluation of your published positions aggregated over time reading your posts). My issue with your positions are your positions. That is in stark contrast to your Three Stooges allusion. You are neither the victim, nor do you hold any argumentative moral high ground.

All this you do to avoid pointed questions and discussion of the issue: why would you, so adamant about an unborn’s “right to life” be so indifferent to the degraded environment that life is brought into? An environment degraded in the name of corporate profit – especially the fossil fuel sector.

  8. o 2019-09-24 12:22

John, “Send me a single credible 5G public safety study and I’ll stop talking about it.”

How about a full indictment of yours?
    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/16/science/5g-cellphones-wireless-cancer.html

Either way, it is clear that your attempt to shift any and all discussion to 5G is the lowest form of “whataboutism”. Much of this reminds me of how the Parkland shooting survivors were also dismissed by the right. These young men and women, these children, have to be the reminder that our rights and our responsibilities MUST be weighed for “ourselves and our posterity.”

  9. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-09-24 12:30

John, I missed the part where you pointed out that any word Thunberg said was incorrect.

Child abuse is leaving our children with a dying planet because we all want more consumer goods and big cars.

  10. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-09-24 12:31

Don’t let John drag us off topic, folks.

Thunberg is correct: our generation is letting kids down by not taking serious action against climate change. Her speech yesterday was brave, true, and worth repeating to elected officials every day until they drop their denial and take serious action.

  11. John Dale 2019-09-24 12:32

o – cite a public funded study, like they perform on baby carriages or plush toys.

Spoiler alert – THERE IS NOT ONE. The wireless industry is waging a war on the truth that wireless technology causes cancer through degradation of DNA.

I was recently criticized for my legal credentials (or lack thereof).

    My credentials in IT/IS are:
B.A. Philosophy, Computer Science Minor, passed upper division course work in cognitive theories of mind, psychology, and Artificial Intelligence.

Master of Science in MIS from The Eller College, Entrepreneurship Concentration. My thesis was a business plan for a computational platform that would save massive amounts of electricity through the automation of information graph production and transport (I built it, but are they coming? https://DB2DOM.COM).

I have 21 years of experience working for corporate clients and researching independently.

All of my instincts and a review of the science lead me to believe with absolute conviction that we should indefinitely postpone the rollout of 5G technology for health, social, and environmental reasons.

.. and I am NOT alone.

  12. John Dale 2019-09-24 12:38

Cory – she is making a prediction about the future .. the same type that Al Gore made that did not come to fruition.

As such, how can I prove something wrong that can only be proven through the passage of time?

This bright and terrified young girl is being used as leverage, in my opinion, to take action against fossil fuel production overnight to create a market opportunity based on a catastrophic even that has not happened and may or may not happen (the Earth has recovered from catastrophe many times, FWIW).

For the record, I’m in favor of reducing dependence on oil and developing solar/wind, but through market forces and careful management of change costs.

I am not in favor of terrifying a little girl about some as yet unproven hypothesis about climate change that has been historically incorrectly predicted, the data inputs for which have been proven fabricated in some cases.

YES – we must take care of our living environment.

NO – we should not terrify children unless the ax murderer is actually in the village and they must run.

Not an easy issue, but I do not get a good feeling that this little girl is crying and terrified and resembles a Hitler Jungend in her appearance, phraseology, ideology and tact.

  13. John Dale 2019-09-24 12:40

Cory – negating your assertion that climate change is a clear and present threat in the next 7 (or 11 or whatever is the most recently prediction) years is not being off topic.

    It is just disagreeing.

In my opinion, the climate change issue is a cash cow for research scientists and environmental activists who want to solve the problem in a way that is too disruptive, that would cause change costs to skyrocket.

  14. Robert McTaggart 2019-09-24 13:16

More efficiency is great. More renewables are great. But there will still be a gap between supply and demand that must be met, as people will demand energy to do what they want, when they want.

That gap is growing as the third world demands our modern conveniences and we transition to electric vehicles.

We close that gap today by burning more natural gas, which emits carbon. In large part the bulk energy globally is still provided by a lot of coal, which also emits carbon and other things. If more carbon is a problem, then you need either need to capture the carbon, have enough battery infrastructure, or generate more clean energy from the get-go.

It would be good to be able to do all three approaches, as that would drive down carbon the fastest. But if the other two are not enough, we can simply do the latter.

  15. Steve Pearson 2019-09-24 13:50

John Dale is absolutely correct. You libs attack him but if Greta’s parents were parading her around for a conservative ideology everyone of you would be crying foul. Like Covington.

You are all hypocrites in every sense.

  16. Steve Pearson 2019-09-24 13:52

“If” climate change were so “true” then why isn’t the poster child for Liberals an actual bonafide Climate Scientist hitting the TV, radio, MSM talk circuit showing the truth, results, proof the end is near? A 16 year old with a form of autism should NOT be.

  17. TAG 2019-09-24 13:54

I think we should all think back to when we were 16, and what brave, intelligent and impactful things we were doing then….

    I’m drawing a blank.

Even a very brief internet search about Greta, her background and her accomplishments gives a person a more meaningful impression of that young woman, who she is, and what she stands for, than the garbage assumptions made by folks that disparage her or her parents with no basis in reality.

She’s not some mentally challenged kid that’s being misled by her parents. She has Asperger’s Syndrome, which is only a mild form of autism that is not characterized by language or intelligence issues. In her own words, she considers it her “superpower” because it allows her to speak the truth without the burden of caring what people think . She has not been coached to care about climate change. She is the driving force behind it in her family, convincing her parents to follow suit.

    An impressive young woman.

  18. Steve Pearson 2019-09-24 14:02

That’s a pretty wild wrapped up bag of cow crap. She has definitely been coached by her two “performance” parents and a child with Aspergers is super computer smart with memorizing. Her parents have convinced her she’ll be dead soon. Pathetic and said.

But let’s look at the following link Tag, Cory, others except Mike because we know he won’t be around due to illness from obesity, sedentary lifestyle.

    https://www.aei.org/publication/50-years-of-failed-doomsday-eco-pocalyptic-predictions-the-so-called-experts-are-0-41/

0 for 50 is bad. If these scientists were professional ball players they would’ve either been let go or moved to rookie ball level.

  19. TAG 2019-09-24 14:14

And please stop characterizing anthropogenic climate change as a “theory” or “hypothosis”. If you want to start using terms that are used by research scientists, the correct one in this case is “scientific consensus”.

You don’t get to the point of consensus casually. It requires many years of independent studies by many researchers, peer review, academic debate, etc. And don’t confuse consensus with unanimous. There are still folks out there trying to disprove evolution, gravity, a spherical earth, etc.

  20. John Tsitrian 2019-09-24 14:21

Don’t like the message? Slam the messenger. After all, Joan of Arc was clearly hallucinating. And that Jesus kid in the temple? Obviously coached.

  21. TAG 2019-09-24 14:33

Wow. A link to the conservative think-tank AEI. So cherry-picking a few short-term predictions that haven’t come true is some kind of admonishment for all those trying to predict environmental disaster? What’s the moral of the story? Do whatever the hell you want, and things will be fine?

    Consider the source:
    https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/American_Enterprise_Institute

“In February 2007, The Guardian (UK) reported that AEI was offering scientists and economists $10,000 each, “to undermine a major climate change report” from the United Nations…”

“Lee Raymond, a former head of ExxonMobil, is the vice-chairman of AEI’s board of trustees”

“AEI has continued to receive money from Exxon Mobil — a total of at least $1,520,000”

“AEI and the head of its energy studies department, Benjamin Zycher, have faced criticism for distorting scientific findings on global warming…”

Propagandist think-tanks are not a valid source.

  22. TAG 2019-09-24 14:43

Fox News? Laura Ingram? This is your proof. Good grief. I’m not going to waste my time on this. If a person can’t see through Fox News they are brainwashed. Go get your confirmation bias elsewhere.

  23. Steve Pearson 2019-09-24 14:46

If you can’t see the doomsday predictions of the past were not true you’re a moron. Regardless of who posted it. Those were all stated predictions by scientists.

  24. mike from iowa 2019-09-24 15:00

The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) is a advocacy group based in Washington DC with long ties to tobacco disinformation campaigns and more recently to climate change denial. It calls itself “a non-profit, non-partisan research and advocacy institute dedicated to the principles of free enterprise and limited government. We believe that individuals are best helped not by government intervention, but by making their own choices in a free marketplace.”[1] The Competitive Enterprise Institute is an “associate” member of the State Policy Network, a web of right-wing “think tanks” in every state across the country.[2]

Until August 2007 CEI’s website CEI stated that it served “as both a think tank—creating intellectual ammunition to support free markets—and an advocacy organization—putting that ammunition to use in persuasive ways.”[3]

It postures as an advocate of “sound science” in the development of public policy. However, CEI projects dispute the overwhelming scientific evidence that human induced greenhouse gas emissions are driving climate change. They have a program for “challenging government regulations”, push property rights as a solution to environment problems, opposed US vehicle fuel efficiency standards, and spin for the drug industry.

Many of its claims have been debunked. Here are a few examples related to climate change:

Annenberg Political Fact Check, “Scientist to CEI: You Used My Research To “Confuse and Mislead,” May 26, 2006.
“Thank you for emitting”, Real Climate, May 18, 2006

  27. mike from iowa 2019-09-24 15:09

Sorry, TAG. I didn’t see your Source Watch article until after I posted mine.

  28. o 2019-09-24 15:11

. . . or we could look at the measurable data confirming climate change devastation: https://climate.nasa.gov/effects/

But by all means, continue to promote a pro-pollution stance; that makes no sense at all.

  29. TAG 2019-09-24 15:18

If you (in the general sense) can’t see the difference between cherry-picking and “scientific consensus” then you really should re-examine how you spend your time. Rather than falling for conspiracy theories and propaganda, you should try to be skeptical about your chosen sources of information. Do some digging on your own. Be smarter about your media consumption.

It’s easy for those trying to twist facts to just find one random prediction or statement from the past that was wrong, to support an agenda. It’s also easy for rich individuals and corporations to fund propaganda.

It’s considerably much harder to produce consensus among scientists that are used to arguing and playing devil’s advocate constantly, simply because they actually care about finding the truth.

  30. TAG 2019-09-24 15:37

Since many of the same think-tanks that were involved in Big Tobacco’s disinformation campaigns in the 90’s (The Heartland Institute was a major one) are now participating in climate denial campaigns now, …

I’ll assume Steve and John agree that cigarettes don’t cause cancer.

There were plenty of doctors and “experts” on the take that testified against the scientific consensus back then, as well. Heartland’s founder and then-president has been a little dodgy recently about his past claims…
    https://www.prwatch.org/news/2014/05/12464/heartland-institute-reluctantly-stands-denial-cigarette-smoking-risks

Looking at the policies of this administration of drill-baby-drill and pollute at-will, it is CLEAR what future President Trump is charting — and who he is choosing to make if great for.

  32. Debbo 2019-09-24 16:08

Ms. Thunberg is a wonderfully courageous young woman. Her speech to the UN was one of the most powerful I have ever heard. She was stunning in her ferocity.

We need law makers on all levels to be equally ferocious if we’re going to save our planet and thus ourselves. There can be no more depraved depth of humanity than the ones who would sacrifice the entire planet and all life on it, including humans, to satiate their bottomless greed and psychic emptiness.

  33. Eve Fisher 2019-09-24 16:22

    https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/the-rights-attack-of-greta-thunberg-is-a-tired-exercise-but-serves-its-purpose/

Smear, lie, denigrate, insult. So far Ms. Thunberg has been called a Nazi, a “children of the corn”, a liar, mentally ill, a terrified child, and manipulated, all because she’s telling the truth and doesn’t give a fig about anyone’s hurt feelings or sensibilities.

We are destroying this planet; there will soon be more plastic than fish in the oceans; we have already passed the point where the earth can replenish what we gobble up; and we (and our descendants) will suffer the consequences. We already are. And our leaders are doing nothing because there’s too much money still to be made, and the greed never stops.

  40. Clyde 2019-09-24 21:04

You climate deniers need to get you head out of wherever you have been keeping it and do a little research.

Take a look at what percent of the atmosphere is CO2 naturally and how much it has changed in recent history. That, I would hope, should get you thinking. If it doesn’t, come on out to central So Dak and try your hand at farming. Talk to some older farmers that don’t watch Fox. I think they will let you know just how screwed up the weather has become. And, no, they won’t say it is a one time aberration. They will tell you that the weather makes things harder and harder as the years go by.

  41. Donald Pay 2019-09-24 21:47

I’m struck by her powerful phrasing, which seems similar to Biblical passages in Amos where God is chastising people for not paying attention to the important things. Also similar to 19th century speeches by Native American chiefs. I love it. She’s a gift to the world. We need to listen.

Thank you, Mr. Dale, for confirming and using exactly the “arguments” (actually, logical fallacies) that the Right Wing Watch wrote the right wing is using. Please at the very least, read a National Geographic or Scientific American magazine once in a while instead of relying on Dinesh D’Souza and his ilk. Even Wikipedia could provide you better information – and citations – than the ones you’re using.

Meanwhile, back here in the real world, there will be no harvests in the Upper Midwest thanks to climate change induced floods; our coastlines are being eaten away by climate change induced storms and sea-level rises; glaciers are vanishing thanks to climate change; and we super-predator humans are in the middle of performing the sixth mass extinction of species, estimated at 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural background rates. Our current level of consumption and waste are unsustainable. Period.

  44. John Dale 2019-09-25 09:58

    Debbo – “fox news”

The interview was with An0maly, a very intelligent and well spoken young former liberal. Watch the evidence he presents. Arguing against Fox News is like arguing against the person.

I’ve noticed that is a favorite tactic among you and mike from iowa – anything that comes from Fox or a source that you might remotely disagree with gives you just the excuse you’re looking for to be intellectually lazy?

  45. John Dale 2019-09-25 10:02

Alex Sherice – “A failed musician turned pro trump conservative grifter”

How did he fail? What is the metric for success? How many fans does/did he have on Twitter? If being a failure is being interviewed on Fox News, count me in as a failure. Oh wait, mike from iowa does that at the beginning of every post.

What is it about what An0maly SAID that you disagree with and why?

Note for the late arrivers: Arguing against the person is why Trump is in office.

“You could care less about your sources as long as they confirm your bias.”

I rarely discount a source this way, although it is tempting. I always try to follow up with information presented and disregard the source. Sometimes it’s beyond the pale, though, like “Hitler said he was a good guy, and I don’t believe the source, so I will just do the research.”

There are some sources that are so discredited that they have lost media share that it might be a good idea to discount for any new information.

I wonder who will open this and look-see?

Laura Loomer – running for congress after exposing shady neoliberal political operatives. A very strong and empowered and brave woman that set up a migrant camp on mobster-Pelosi’s front lawn. That was an awesome and hilarious stunt. She actually had real illegals and Pelosi kicked them out of her WALLED YARD (the wall was too short to keep them out, though).

Andy Ngo – A gay asian journalist that was savagely beaten for taking pictures of an Antifa rally.

    Cory – “not fortune-telling but truth-telling”

Okay, so she is a prophet?

Our present situation is a mess that is exacerbated by weapons of war, weather weapons, Chinese pollution and plastics production, overly constrictive and invasive surveillance systems, psychobabble that tries to double as psychoanalysis, an inability to harness the true power of information systems responsibly, and the list goes on.

It’s a complex picture, and young people like Greta should not be considered experts.

This is why, with the introduction of singularity technology, I would seriously consider a minimum nationally guaranteed salary – a dividend. Yang is very smart to put this proposal forward, even if I the likelihood he’ll win is very low.

When people aren’t by and large scratching to survive, and when they won’t just use their dividend to purchase Chinese opioids, we can detach financial motives from the analysis.

Right now, there are financial motives on both sides – big oil and big research science – that are clouding the picture.

Even valid conclusions like “ice cap volumes are difficult to measure because of rainfall accumulation”, are vociferously disputed.

  48. John Dale 2019-09-25 10:37

Eve Fisher – I assure you that my sources of information are wide and varied. I read Scientific American and National Geographic, but I also read research studies that have not yet made it to the main stream. As an information scientist myself, I consider how the flow of information that feeds conclusions about weather science are gamed by both sides (mostly the research scientist community, however, who has the biggest profit motive from always-impending environmental catastrophe).

“relying on Dinesh D’Souza and his ilk” – do you think D’Souza was rightfully imprisoned?

“no harvests in the Upper Midwest thanks to climate change induced floods”

My grandma used to say that farmers were the biggest welfare recipients of all. They have been marginalized in the last 70 years, and dis-incentivized from being innovative and hedging against floods, which have happened a LOT in Earth’s history.

“super-predator humans are in the middle of performing the sixth mass extinction of species” — you have this absolutely correct, although you stop short of saying who they are, so I will take a swipe. Global banks are fronting China, who wants to use weaponized 5G to biometrically target and destroy dissent to the globalist agenda to redraw borders and impose artificially normalized culture on the globe. In the fog of conflict and civil war, they want to prey upon us all.

  49. Eve Fisher 2019-09-25 10:51

D’Souza rightfully convicted? Yes. And he was not “imprisoned” – in fact, he was spared prison time, and was sentenced to 8 months in a half-way house, where he could come and go “under supervision”, much like Jeffrey Epstein in his few days under court-ordered supervision. D’Souza’s continued claim of martyrdom is hilarious, but typical of right-wing provocateurs. He and Milo Yiannopoulos are about dead-even in the ongoing self-pity sweepstakes.

  50. John Dale 2019-09-25 11:08

“At the time, D’Souza’s attorney, Benjamin Brafman, told The Washington Post in a statement that D’Souza did not have any “criminal intent” — it was simply an “act of misguided friendship.”

“He and the candidate have been friends since their college days,” Brafman explained to the newspaper. “It is important to note that the indictment does not allege a corrupt relationship between Mr. D’Souza and the candidate.”

The real reason he was indicted and convicted was because he made an effective film critical of his enemies.

In a world where campaign donations run rampant from many quarters, his “crime” seems fairly innocuous to me. The conviction was not fair recompense for the social/political damage he was doing to his enemies:

No matter what is said it turns into BS here. So here is my statements on this issue.

    1) I get what you say about CEI. BUT regardless those predictions were NOT them. And none of those happened. Not even close.

    2) I agree with you on taking care of the planet. And all of you would do better to look at areas we can agree and work together. BUT every single Dem running during the God awful day long climate debate had one and only one answer. Taxes.

    3) Not a one of you touched my comment on if a Conservative had their 16 yr old kid, let alone having autism, leading an ideological or being the face of a ideology ALL of you would be screaming. Much like the Covington kids which is a close example. Your hypocrisy is mind boggling.

    4) Since 1988 I’ve been visiting the same beach in Southern California and I mark in the beach area each year or two years depending on me getting there. The sea level has NEVER changed in 30 years. It’s the same. How is that possible?

Now, you’re beating him proverbially for having political dispositions countermanding your own.

  53. AlexSherice 2019-09-25 14:12

    You are lying Dale.

Andy’s story is public record. He antagonized Antifi, got punched out, milkshaked, then feigned a brain injury and grifted over a hundred grand from a gofundme.

Are you going to explain why you mentioned him being a gay asian? It has nothing to do with why he was beaten up. Keep trying to unlock his victimhood you fraud.

He is not a journalist. He is a con artist and provocateur.

  54. John Dale 2019-09-25 14:17

  57. TAG 2019-09-25 14:24

Steve, I really hesitate to follow you down this rabbit-hole of logic and “whataboutism”, since you fail to address the question of climate change directly, but since you are whining about us not addressing your arguments, here goes:

“1) I get what you say about CEI. BUT regardless those predictions were NOT them. And none of those happened. Not even close.”

Here is an article that addresses the claims made by the CEI article very well, with a balanced historical perspective.
    https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/why-didnt-first-earth-days-predictions-come-true-its-complicated-180958820/
I encourage you to read the whole thing.

“2) I agree with you on taking care of the planet. And all of you would do better to look at areas we can agree and work together. BUT every single Dem running during the God awful day long climate debate had one and only one answer. Taxes.”

I think what you are meaning to say is “regulations” rather than taxes. As in: EPA regulations? I think there is room for debate on how far regulations should go. Balance, if you will. But if your stance is simply anti-regulation, that market forces will somehow keep industries from polluting our air and drinking water, … then you would be wrong. See the previously linked article for examples.

“3) Not a one of you touched my comment on if a Conservative had their 16 yr old kid, let alone having autism, leading an ideological or being the face of a ideology ALL of you would be screaming. Much like the Covington kids which is a close example. Your hypocrisy is mind boggling.”

I guess I don’t see a strong parallel between teens promoting the ideology of racism and teens promoting the ideology of preventing global ecological collapse. Should we be praising the Covington kids for something? being able to procure a PR guy? Mind boggling, indeed.

“4) Since 1988 I’ve been visiting the same beach in Southern California and I mark in the beach area each year or two years depending on me getting there. The sea level has NEVER changed in 30 years. It’s the same. How is that possible?”

This is the definition of “anecdotal evidence”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anecdotal_evidence
I’m not calling you a liar, or saying you are exaggerating, but this is not science. Besides, beaches are very dynamic (constantly changing) places, and not really where sea level is typically measured. High/low tide, seasonal changes, beach erosion is constant, etc. Care to elaborate on your method?

Over the last 30 years the global average sea level has risen 3.3 mm per year. Pretty gradual over that time span, but the models show an exponential upturn in the next 100 years as the polar ice melts, speeding up the process. Take a look at these charts, since they actually call out the last 30 years on the chart:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_level_rise
If this forcast is accurate, you should see an uptick in just the next few decades.

“5) Eve Fisher needs learning on weather/meteorology. WOW” Since this is just a naked personal attack with no supporting evidence (ala Trump), I’ll let Eve respond to it, if she cares to.

  58. Debbo 2019-09-25 16:06

There’s a great photo of Greta Thunberg and Jane Goodall sitting together on a bench, looking into one another’s faces. Those two know things about courage, compassion, wisdom, heart and strength that only a very few others in the world do.

It’s a stirring and memorable photo that put tears in my eyes.

We should all be so grateful for those two. If we humans were really as intelligent as we like to think, we’d turn to them and say, “Tell us what to do and we’ll do it, without question.”

    They. Know.

  59. mike from iowa 2019-09-25 16:14

One would think Jane Goodall would have moar affinity for drumpf and wingnuts as they de-evolve back to the tree they came from right in front of our eyes. Or maybe she only wants apes that can be explained by science.

  60. Robin Friday 2019-09-25 16:57

Steve Pearson–there’s nothing wrong with autistic people leading a discussion on climate change or anything else. There’s nothing wrong with the intellectual level of autistic people depending on where they are on the spectrum. They are often ahead of most people of average to normal intelligence. Secondly, Autistic people tend to fixate on a subject to the exclusion of everything else, and as such learn more science and truth than we will ever possess. Thirdly, it is not the intellectual level where autistic people lack some skills, it is the social area. And that can be taught. There is much to learn from autistic people. Don’t dismiss them for being autistic. We do so at our own diminishment.

  61. mike from iowa 2019-09-25 17:11

Autistic people, according to wingnuts, should not be seen or heard when they are proven to be light years more intelligent than stable geniuses and his followers.

  62. John Dale 2019-09-25 17:24

Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.”

  66. John Dale 2019-09-25 20:01

Robin Friday – I think the point is not that she has Autism, but rather that she is being used to sway opinion about an issue that is contentious and debatable. Science by definition is non-dogmatic, yet this young lady has been convinced that she will be dead if we do not allocate trillions of dollars to a project that will benefit corporations and research universities and politicians without really knowing if the precursor to the reallocation of funding is legitimate.

Let’s debate the efficacy of the doom and gloom prediction and leave the little girl out of the arena. She shouldn’t be terrified, and neither should we .. living in that terrified state is a good way to make bad decisions.

  68. John Dale 2019-09-25 20:17

Cory – It’s an empirical question that can only be answered in time.

The information presented about previous climate change predictions is pretty compelling when it comes to being careful about how frantically we try to deal with the problem.

I feel kind of sorry for the poor kid. The whole thing has been thrust on her shoulders, and it’s a contentious fight with virtually no clear answers and LOTS of money involved.

I am personally in favor of paying citizen scientists to collect more data. That might be a good place to start.

  69. Debbo 2019-09-25 21:07

Ms. Thunberg has been on the Daily Show where Trevor Noah did a very nice interview with her. She’s really sharp. I wouldn’t be surprised if she wins the Nobel.

Lying Lunatic will probably submit himself again.

  70. Robin Friday 2019-09-25 21:49

I see no evidence that she is being used. The idea that she’s being used does not automatically follow from the fact that she’s young. She’s a bright young person with Asperger’s and quite often it’s useful to listen to those who think differently.

  71. o 2019-09-26 14:57

Debbo, “Lying Lunatic will probably submit himself again.”

I more expect that soon President Trump will just claim that he HAS won one (to two, or three . . .). When has reality ever been a criteria for a Trump narrative? After all, he won the popular vote, he drained the swamp, he brought in the best people, he is a stable genius, why not just add Nobel laureate to the list?

  72. TAG 2019-09-26 15:29

Show me on the doll where she hurt you.

  74. Debbo 2019-09-26 17:52

TAG, you’re right about Ms. Thunberg. Except she doesn’t have “balls,” because they’re a sometimes inadequate source for courage and mostly because she’s female. She does have the ovaries to stand up to an auditorium of adults and tell them just how pathetic they are.

(I’ve always felt it’s so bizarre when anyone, and women do it to, think it’s a compliment to describe a female as having “balls. Really? Eeuuwwww.)

  75. TAG 2019-09-26 22:50

Debbo, I appreciate your perspective, but I prefer my characterization of her performance. It may be a bit crude, or low-rent, but I just don’t feel like “moxie” or “chutzpah” or “intestinal fortitude” or “boldness” is an apt enough descriptor. No sexist intent.

  76. Debbo 2019-09-26 23:34

I don’t find it sexist, just weird.

Here’s the perfect cartoon for the admirable Ms. Thunberg from the Strib’s Pulitzer winning cartoonist, Steve Sack:

  77. John Dale 2019-09-27 06:34

The strange anti-male, overcompensatory ritualization (paying homage to the female archetype through wordsmith exchange with the feminist bishop Debbo) notwithstanding, people with Autism frequently have issues with self awareness, meaning that embarrassment is less of an issue for them. So, in Greta’s case, I wonder if she didn’t really have that hurdle to overcome.

Debbo frequently refers to Trump’s testicles. Rather, she seems to have an obsession with visions of Trump not having testicles, which is very strange. Referring to him as a Eunuch should command more attention from Porter Lansing’s laboratory of psychobabb .. er .. analysis. I’m sure there is some interesting babbl .. er .. analysis to be had there.

Antifa has been beating people in the streets for wearing MAGA hats. Greta and her parents seem to support Antifa. That is troubling to me. Anyone supporting Antifa winning the Nobel Prize lends credence to the notion that the NP is not worth what it used to be worth, does not signify what it used to signify.

President Obama had no idea what he’d done to earn one, other than being black.

Speaking of cartoons, here is another one I’d like to put up for consideration.

MRI’s link at 9-27 16:14 is very interesting. My mother’s family farmed around Sibley, IA. Some still have land, but they don’t do much farming themselves, since they’re old and the kids didn’t want to farm. Northwest IA and Southwest MN drew a lot of German immigrant farmers through chain migration in the mid to late 1800s. They set up there because land was cheap. It was cheap because there was a lot of wetland and temporary wetland that couldn’t be farmed until tiling came in. That tiling is getting pretty old and it is engineered for 20th century water conditions. It isn’t going to be adequate to drain all that water coming with climate change. That is going to be good for ducks, geese and other wildlife, but corn and soy are going to be problematic.

My Mom told me that when my grandfather farmed, they used horses and they grew lots of different crops: corn, wheat, barley, oats, rye. I guess they had switched to tractors by the time I came along, because that’s all I remember. I remember they had cows, pigs and chickens. I also remember I loved the color of rye when I when I was a kid and didn’t much care for the smell of “hogs,” which is what my grandfather called what I called “pigs.” Sometime during my childhood all this changed. It was just corn and soy and the animals mostly went away. I think my grandfather planted a few acres of oats and rye for the old times. They started using ammonia instead of manure. I’m not sure if all these changes came before or after my grandfather committed suicide. The constant tension in farming and the constant changes from the old German way of doing things may have caught up with him.

One thing I’ve been wondering is how much climate change may increase all these tension on those who choose to stay to try to eek out a living on land that has prolonged flooding. With all the capitol investment needed in modern farming, it doesn’t seem that they can afford to have land constantly underwater. I suppose crop insurance may provide a lifeline, but at some point why should the taxpayer’s subsidize farmers on flooded lands. When that happens how many people hang themselves from the barn?

There are lots of ramifying consequences of climate change. Mental stress may be one we aren’t thinking about much.

  84. Eve Fisher 2019-09-28 13:47

The three things that conservatives accuse everyone they disagree with of being / being paid by / supporting: Antifa, George Soros, and Hillary Clinton. It’s easier than actually doing any research into why so many people are opposed, say, to climate change. And why 97% of global climate experts (i.e., scientists) agree that climate change is happening, quickly, and because of human activity.

    https://climate.nasa.gov/faq/17/do-scientists-agree-on-climate-change/

It’s a worry for me that I try not to obsess over, though it was a constant fear in my family due to the farm crises of the 70s and 80s coupled with my father’s struggles with depression. I knew neighbors had similar issues.

One sold cattle that were under lien and spent time in prison for that while his wife, an RN, embezzled from the nursing home. She got a short stint in jail, restitution, lost her nursing license and had long probation. Their 3 children were grown, but still traumatized.

There was lots of drinking, spousal and child abuse, children acting out, juvenile crimes, trouble in school, etc. Divorce, children in foster care and similar issues were rampant.

Economic Eunuch, Moscow Mule Thune, Roundy and Dustmop are very clear that the pain EE’s unnecessary trade wars are responsible for are irrelevant to them. They just don’t care about the suffering they’re causing as long as they’re happy.

Mayor and his colleague Didier Queloz were on Tuesday awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for their research refining techniques to detect so-called exoplanets.

“If we are talking about exoplanets, things should be clear: we will not migrate there,” Mayor told AFP near Madrid on the sidelines of a conference when asked about the possibility of humans moving to other planets.

AT&T and other mobile carriers are trying to hide detailed 5G maps from the public despite constantly touting the supposed pace and breadth of their 5G rollouts. With the Federal Communications Commission planning to require carriers to submit more accurate data about broadband deployment, AT&T and the mobile industry’s top lobby group are urging the FCC to exclude 5G from the upgraded data collection. “There is broad agreement that it is not yet time to require reporting on 5G coverage,” AT&T told the FCC in a filing this week.

  95. Robert McTaggart 2019-10-11 10:45

    Debbo,

You and I won’t be going to the stars, but humans may one day be able to get to another star system by solar power….in this case by riding the solar wind (go to the Sun, open up the sails, and get that momentum boost). They will not be able to provide power on such a journey by solar power however. That would likely require fusion or fission.

But for Mars, one solution to reducing the effects of zero gravity and galactic radiation during the journey (and back) will be to get people there sooner. That means you need to use nuclear propulsion instead of chemical propulsion. Chemical propulsion may be fine for trips to the moon and for hauling stuff, and for getting off of the earth’s surface in the first place, but not for long-term space travel with humans on board. We’ll see if they can get the time down to a month for a one-way trip.

We don’t talk about Venus much at all due to its current condition, but at one point both Venus and Mars were very similar to Earth. We need to better understand what happened to them.

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/20/world/venus-habitability-scn/index.html

“Something happened on Venus where a huge amount of gas was released into the atmosphere and couldn’t be re-absorbed by the rocks. On Earth we have some examples of large-scale outgassing, for instance the creation of the Siberian Traps 500 million years ago which is linked to a mass extinction, but nothing on this scale. It completely transformed Venus,” Way said.

“However, our models show that there is a real possibility that Venus could have been habitable and radically different from the Venus we see today. This opens up all kinds of implications for exoplanets found in what is called the ‘Venus Zone’, which may in fact host liquid water and temperate climates.”

Interesting Mac. There’s a new telescope with the largest mirror yet in the works. One mirror has been built and the 2nd is in process. It will be exciting to see what it reveals.

The idiot Iowa City teacher who made the stoooooopid comment about his sniper rifle in regard to Ms. Thunberg was immediately suspended. Scheit-for-brains has resigned, effective immediately. The school has accepted his resignation, happy immediately.

    Debbo,
Arvol Looking Horse the Keeper of the Pipe for the Sioux Nation bestowed the Indian Name “Woman who came from heavens” upon her.

  99. Debbo 2019-10-12 12:25

Wow. What an honor from Mr. Looking Horse.

I didn’t know this was possible:

“Lamppa’s wood-burning furnaces are enjoying fresh interest after a key Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) test last year showed Lamppa’s ‘Kuuma Vapor-Fire 100’ furnace burned wood so much cleaner than oil or propane that it was basically carbon neutral.”

    Strib paywall is.gd/eJDxGU

Wow. These furnaces were created and are manufactured in northern Minnesota.

Burning wood cleanly? That could be a big step toward making local renewable fuel sources less dirty. Now if we can just chop down those trees with zero-emission chainsaws….

  102. John Dale 2019-10-21 08:34

    Debbo – “Lamppa’s wood-burning furnaces”

I like this. Has China stolen it, yet? ;)

But seriously, folks .. this could be fantastic.

Cory – what we need is a genetically modified tree that grows in the shape of a Lamppa’s wood-burning furnace log.

    “zero-emission chainsaws” = axes

  104. John Dale 2019-10-21 10:39

    bcb – “‘”zero-emission chainsaws” = axes’

But we can’t have axes being sold on the open market without background checks. They kill more people than “assault rifles”.

We’ll have to find another way .. perhaps focused 5G energy from LEO could be used to split wood.

But I still like my GMO trees idea .. that’s a real winner! :D

  105. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2019-10-21 12:48

Axes! Yeah, but I’m going to emit a lot of carbon dioxide running one of those units. ;-)

Then again, our personal emissions don’t upset the CO2 balance, since when we eat and breathe, we aren’t releasing CO2 trapped millions of years ago in fossils. And maybe if we went to axes, we’d have more jobs for people displaced by automation elsewhere, good outdoor jobs that build character….

  106. John Dale 2019-10-21 13:08

I think people should be free to choose their own course .. using automation, they can, as long as we’re careful about the distribution of the profits emanating from the singularity.

“good outdoor jobs that build character” – self actualization builds character. Do outdoor jobs have a monopoly in character building? Hrmm ..

  107. Robert McTaggart 2019-10-21 13:17

Didn’t Lincoln run for President by being able to wield an axe?

Not sure who could do that this time around. Not Trump. Maybe Klobuchar since she is from Minnesota?

  108. Debbo 2019-10-21 14:46

Hemp could probably be burned in those furnaces.

    Electric chainsaws.

  109. mike from iowa 2019-10-21 16:08

Whatever the ingredient in burning wood or leaves that smells so Fallsy, I wish someone could can it in an air freshener.

  110. Debbo 2019-10-21 16:25

Mike, didn’t you know that I’m a Russian agent?! Just ask “AJ”. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 You’re probably a Russian agent too, right? That’s why we’re both so wealthy.
