The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in ten years only gives us a 50 percent chance of staying below 1.5 degrees and the risk of setting up irreversible chain reactions beyond human control. Fifty percent may be acceptable to you, but those numbers do not include tipping points most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution, or the aspects of equity and climate justice.
They also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist. So a 50 percent risk is simply not acceptable to us. We who have to live with the consequences. To have a 67 percent chance of staying below the 1.5 degree of temperature rise, the best odds given by the IPCC, the world had 420 gigatons of CO2 left to emit back on January 1, 2018.
Today that figure is already down to less than 350 gigatons. How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just business as usual and some technical solutions? With today’s emissions levels, that remaining CO2 that entire budget will be gone is less than 8 and a half years. There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today because these numbers are too uncomfortable and you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.
You are failing us, but young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say we will never forgive you. We will not let you get away with this, right here, right now, is where we draw the line. In addition to listening to Thunberg’s speech, world leaders spent over eight hours presenting specific plans for reducing the greenhouse emissions that are wrecking Thunberg’s future.
Meanwhile, the purported leader of the free world made a token appearance for fourteen minutes, left for a revival meeting that he arranged himself to solicit hosannahs from “Christians”, then responded to Thunberg with thoughtless sarcasm:

This seems like child abuse to me. I read she is Autistic. Back in 1987, the same types of predictions were made .. the Earth is very resilient and fluctuates wildly in temperature.
My own personal belief is that we should clean up after ourselves, and if given a chance at the help of a major corporation to make a difference, I would do my best toward that end.
Children should be engaged with the system early, but this young lady seems to have been thrust into a position that is radically less dangerous than, say, 5G, which will be pushed as a way to force compliance with green mandates.
If she was railing against 5G, I might actually understand the urgency since it can be biometrically targeted to fry out clusters of neurology to affect/change human behavior and even kill.

In my opinion, the climate change issue is a cash cow for research scientists and environmental activists who want to solve the problem in a way that is too disruptive, that would cause change costs to skyrocket.
More efficiency is great. More renewables are great. But there will still be a gap between supply and demand that must be met, as people will demand energy to do what they want, when they want.
That gap is growing as the third world demands our modern conveniences and we transition to electric vehicles.
We close that gap today by burning more natural gas, which emits carbon. In large part the bulk energy globally is still provided by a lot of coal, which also emits carbon and other things. If more carbon is a problem, then you need either need to capture the carbon, have enough battery infrastructure, or generate more clean energy from the get-go.
It would be good to be able to do all three approaches, as that would drive down carbon the fastest. But if the other two are not enough, we can simply do the latter.

It postures as an advocate of “sound science” in the development of public policy. However, CEI projects dispute the overwhelming scientific evidence that human induced greenhouse gas emissions are driving climate change. They have a program for “challenging government regulations”, push property rights as a solution to environment problems, opposed US vehicle fuel efficiency standards, and spin for the drug industry.

It’s a complex picture, and young people like Greta should not be considered experts.
This is why, with the introduction of singularity technology, I would seriously consider a minimum nationally guaranteed salary – a dividend. Yang is very smart to put this proposal forward, even if I the likelihood he’ll win is very low.
When people aren’t by and large scratching to survive, and when they won’t just use their dividend to purchase Chinese opioids, we can detach financial motives from the analysis.
Right now, there are financial motives on both sides – big oil and big research science – that are clouding the picture.

I read Scientific American and National Geographic, but I also read research studies that have not yet made it to the main stream. As an information scientist myself, I consider how the flow of information that feeds conclusions about weather science are gamed by both sides (mostly the research scientist community, however, who has the biggest profit motive from always-impending environmental catastrophe).

I think what you are meaning to say is “regulations” rather than taxes. As in: EPA regulations? I think there is room for debate on how far regulations should go. Balance, if you will. Besides, beaches are very dynamic (constantly changing) places, and not really where sea level is typically measured. High/low tide, seasonal changes, beach erosion is constant, etc. Care to elaborate on your method?
Over the last 30 years the global average sea level has risen 3.3 mm per year. Pretty gradual over that time span, but the models show an exponential upturn in the next 100 years as the polar ice melts, speeding up the process. Take a look at these charts, since they actually call out the last 30 years on the chart:

MRI’s link at 9-27 16:14 is very interesting. My mother’s family farmed around Sibley, IA. Some still have land, but they don’t do much farming themselves, since they’re old and the kids didn’t want to farm. Northwest IA and Southwest MN drew a lot of German immigrant farmers through chain migration in the mid to late 1800s. They set up there because land was cheap. It was cheap because there was a lot of wetland and temporary wetland that couldn’t be farmed until tiling came in. That tiling is getting pretty old and it is engineered for 20th century water conditions. It isn’t going to be adequate to drain all that water coming with climate change. That is going to be good for ducks, geese and other wildlife, but corn and soy are going to be problematic.
My Mom told me that when my grandfather farmed, they used horses and they grew lots of different crops: corn, wheat, barley, oats, rye. I guess they had switched to tractors by the time I came along, because that’s all I remember. I remember they had cows, pigs and chickens. I also remember I loved the color of rye when I when I was a kid and didn’t much care for the smell of “hogs,” which is what my grandfather called what I called “pigs.” Sometime during my childhood all this changed. It was just corn and soy and the animals mostly went away. I think my grandfather planted a few acres of oats and rye for the old times. They started using ammonia instead of manure. I’m not sure if all these changes came before or after my grandfather committed suicide. The constant tension in farming and the constant changes from the old German way of doing things may have caught up with him.
One thing I’ve been wondering is how much climate change may increase all these tension on those who choose to stay to try to eek out a living on land that has prolonged flooding. With all the capitol investment needed in modern farming, it doesn’t seem that they can afford to have land constantly underwater. I suppose crop insurance may provide a lifeline, but at some point why should the taxpayer’s subsidize farmers on flooded lands. When that happens how many people hang themselves from the barn?
There are lots of ramifying consequences of climate change. Mental stress may be one we aren’t thinking about much.
The three things that conservatives accuse everyone they disagree with of being / being paid by / supporting: Antifa, George Soros, and Hillary Clinton. It’s easier than actually doing any research into why so many people are opposed, say, to climate change. And why 97% of global climate experts (i.e., scientists) agree that climate change is happening, quickly, and because of human activity.

It’s a worry for me that I try not to obsess over, though it was a constant fear in my family due to the farm crises of the 70s and 80s coupled with my father’s struggles with depression. I knew neighbors had similar issues.

You and I won’t be going to the stars, but humans may one day be able to get to another star system by solar power….in this case by riding the solar wind (go to the Sun, open up the sails, and get that momentum boost). They will not be able to provide power on such a journey by solar power however. That would likely require fusion or fission.
But for Mars, one solution to reducing the effects of zero gravity and galactic radiation during the journey (and back) will be to get people there sooner. That means you need to use nuclear propulsion instead of chemical propulsion. Chemical propulsion may be fine for trips to the moon and for hauling stuff, and for getting off of the earth’s surface in the first place, but not for long-term space travel with humans on board. We’ll see if they can get the time down to a month for a one-way trip.
