Trump/GOP Policies Raise Cost of Living for 99% of Americans

You can take a highlighted copy of your sample ballot to the polls today to remind you how to vote. Or, at least for the candidate portion, you can just take this chart from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy:

…and vote against every Republican for letting Trump jack up the cost of living for everyone but the richest 1%.

If you prefer straight dollars to percentages, clip this chart showing the net dollar impact of tariffs, our war on Iran, anti-immigrant policies, last year’s big ugly tax bill, and the cancellation of Obamacare tax credits:

ITEP notes that these economic losses for 99% of Americans do not include the pocketbook damage done by the $1 trillion Republicans have cut from Medicaid or the $186 billion they’ve cut from food assistance.

We can complicate the analysis by noting that the Republican big ugly bill last year did lower taxes for the top 60% of Americans, but Trumpflation on fuel, consumer goods, and health insurance ate up those savings for everyone but millionaires:

This inflation isn’t some random economic misfortune caused by a virus or hurricanes or demographics or foreign despots. This is Trumpflation, money coming out of your pocket and most of your neighbors’ pockets and rolling up Snob Hill to your local millionaires’ pockets due to deliberate policy choices made by Donald J. Trump and the Republicans who stand applauding as he alternatively rants and naps behind his desk.

Punish the man and the party who are stealing your money by voting every Trump flunky at every level out of power and electing Democrats and other brave souls who will work for you and all your neighbors, not just the rich ones, to undo that robbery.

State Notes: According to ITEP’s state-by-state analysis, South Dakotans somehow haven’t been hit as hard by Trump’s economic rampage as the most of the country. Nationally, Trumpublicans have raised taxes and consumer costs 1.1%, but in South Dakota, Trumpflation has only been 0.8%. Only the District of Columbia, New Hampshire, and New Jersey matched that 0.8% overall Trumpflation; only six states—Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, and North Dakota—have held Trumpflation down to 0.7%.

The worst Trump price carnage is 1.5% in North Carolina and Mississippi and 1.4% in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, and West Virginia.

In straight dollars, ITEP figures the middle 60% of Americans are paying an average of $1,670 more than they would if Trump hadn’t started wrecking the economy. South Dakota comes out better in that analysis, too, with costs for our broad middle rising “only” $1,470. The lowest Trumpflationary impact to the middle class has been in Minnesota and Ohio, $1,210. Trump’s punch to the middle-class gut exceeds $2,000 in two states: Florida ($2,340) and Wyoming ($2,080).

  1. It’s just common sense. If you get sick either get better or die. People with high school education die nine years earlier anyway. An upcoming change on pregnancy protections will help keep women barefoot and pregnant too.
It’s hard to change idiocy. South Dakotans believe that a rich boy from Manhattan is in with their lives. Why even have them go to school? At least today will end the worst of it. The power of the purse is still in congress, right?
