More than 36,600 people died in road wrecks in 2025. That’s actually encouraging, since that figure represents the fourth straight year of fewer road deaths. Highway deaths are down for many reasons; among them is President Joe Biden’s big beautiful infrastructure bill:
[Insurance Institute for Highway Safety president David] Harkey said the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which passed in 2021 during former President Joe Biden’s administration and directed $550 billion in new spending, has helped states implement proven countermeasures to curb roadway dangers.
“Look at roundabouts, for example, which can reduce fatalities by 80% at an intersection. We’re seeing those go in at a much more rapid rate in some states now,” he said. “Another example is speed safety cameras. We’ve seen a huge uptick in the number of cameras being implemented across the country.”
The landmark Biden-era spending package, notably, lifted a ban on states’ ability to use federal funds for automated traffic enforcement [Grant Schwab, “U.S. Road Deaths Decline for Fourth Straight Year,” The Detroit News via Governing, 2026.04.15].
I miss having a President we could count on to make America safer.
You know you would think that Trumps continued lying about Biden would wear thin after awhile. However the Mega base is sooo ignorant that’s not happening. Just continue to point out the truth. Its the American way.
Mega Maga who cares.
Nobody will read this blogging without a headline. It will go unnoticed, like the presidency of Mr. Biden.
you don’t think it has anything to do with safety features in cars and advancements in trauma medicine?
I don’t know about reductions in the incidence of impaired driving, but my husband is a car collector and I was certified in trauma nursing.
Those older model cars are terrifying to ride in. No seat belts, no headrests, no airbags, no antilock brakes, and many of those things are still on the road, but every year, there’s fewer of them.
Newer model cars alert you when your tires are running low, they actually sound an alarm when you start dozing off, will brake if it senses an obstacle in front of you, beep at you if you get too close to anything and will steer you back into your lane if you start to weave. And if you skid off the road and land upside down in the ditch and are rendered unconscious, some cars will even call an ambulance for you and provide your location.
I think those features probably have a lot to do with traffic fatality rates.
Then there is trauma medicine: Better equipped ambulances and more professionally trained staff so that a ground crew is actually a Level V trauma center on wheels, a flight team is like a Level IV in the air.
when it comes to access to emergency healthcare, things most people don’t think about come into play, like how many teams and helicopters there are and how far away are they, and can they land on that road or farm or are there overhead power lines in the way?
The success of rapid “scoop and run” emergency care has really improved outcomes. Getting trauma victims to surgical hospitals as fast as possible works, and it gets better all the time. A lot of the credit for a reduction in traffic fatalities should go to the furst responders
The mother of my daughters, the Odd Goddess of Basin and Our Lady of the Arroyo are all registered nurses, so are neighbors and friends Tim, Micki, Lisa, Matthew, Leslie, Nancy, Joan, Lori and Sarah. Each one loathes Trump as does every other medical professional they know who will never, ever vote for a Republican again.
Seatbelts and helmets save lives but there are ignorant people who choose not to wear them.
There is a lot of texting and phone use behind the wheel.
People speed all the time,
It’s become a habit here for people to park facing another car, do U-turns, and forget the right of way.
People are in a hurry, driving faster, and more unsafe.
I’m still driving a car and feel very vulnerable with all the big outfits I can’t see around. Many of them however feel invincible.
I’m more than grateful for our emergency and medical personnel. They see and deal with stupidity more than most of us. It’s a calling, thank you
