Among our Christmas blessings is Rick Knobe’s report that his 79-year-old body and mind have passed the medical tests he’s undergone this fall. Alas, not appearing in our Christmas stockings is any announcement that the former Sioux Falls mayor will run for Governor in 2026. Even though he’d be a heck of a candidate and a more capable and independent chief executive than anyone in the race, Knobe says he is out:
At this point I see more high hurdles than smooth running. I’m concerned about my energy and stamina. You deserve a candidate and a governor who can go fast and long.
I’m not running.
If I was 49, 59, or even 69, I’d do it. I believe I would have had a better than 50-50 chance, especially in this toxic political environment.
I will offer my support to a candidate, regardless of party, that I think can lift all of us up.
I am going to continue writing, continue working with Change Agents of South Dakota, and WeThePeopleSD.org. Both groups are about better government. Check them out on Facebook.
In closing, I am grateful to you for offering support. It means a lot.
I’m sure there is a younger version of me in this state somewhere. Please encourage him or her to step forward.
Godspeed and Merry Christmas! [Rick Knobe, “I Would Still Love to Be Governor—But Desipte Being Healthy in Mind and Body, I’m Not Running in 2026,” South Dakota Standard, 2025.12.23]
A former mayor with a record of achievement, exceptional communication skills, credible independence from the existing political machine, and name recognition strong enough to make him a serious contender the moment he announces—I don’t think we’ll find a younger version of that in South Dakota right now.
Merry Christmas, Rick! We’re all glad you are well and can continue to put your energy into the projects you choose. I just wish one of those projects was running for Governor.
Recruiting a self-respecting Democrat to live in Pierre is my biggest challenge this election cycle.
Come on Larry, I had a one year job in the Kneip administration. I had a choice of either Taco Bell or Taco Johns. What else does anyone need?
