Among my small pleasures this relaxing morning is clicking on the SDGOP spin blog’s link to right-wing-extremist platform Parler and getting the “404 Not Found” screen:
Ah, how emblematic of the Trump-tattered Republican Party: still feebly waving its ideological flag, but with no content to back it up.
Parler, of course, is broken (well, it was from the beginning, but now it’s really broken) because it helped foment Trump’s white-supremacist insurrection and because Web services provider Amazon is choosing not to be a part of such villainy. Likewise their Dear Leader Donald Trump has been kicked off Web platforms for betraying the Constitution and the rule of law.
Parler is suing to force Amazon to help publish its crap. Parler lost its first court hearing last week Thursday, failing to secure an emergency injunction against Amazon. Hee hee.
Trump and Trumpists have been crying censorship all year about online bans of their hate speech. Their First Amendment claims are, of course, as wrong as most of the other things fascists say. Amazon, Twitter, and Google are not the government. They may permit or ban whatever content they wish.
What Trump and Parler are really complaining about is that Twitter and Amazon won’t let them outsource the hard work of building a national communication platform. But instead of clogging the courts with weak legal arguments for government intervention (which will never come from corrupt institutions controlled by the Deep State), you’d think good conservatives and capitalists like Trump and the Parlerites claim to be would seek a conservative, capitalist solution: sink Trump’s vast riches into building their own online service.
If I had Trump’s billions and Parler’s audience, I’d sink my money into buying a big server farm , patching in to the Internet, and charging my users a subscription fee for the great new and independent service I would provide them to spread our shared views and values without interference from Big Tech and all the other enemies QAnon tells us are out to diddle and eat our children. Surely with so much at stake, Trump and his followers would be willing to invest in a robust communication infrastructure that would help resist the grave threats to our freedom.
But no: Trump and Parler expect their alleged enemies to do their work for them… kind of like expecting me to publish Kristi Noem’s press releases without commentary and fact-checking, or expecting Mexico to build that wall. Trump and Parler are the worst kinds of communists, the ones who pretend not to want government controlling everything but who really want government to control everything for their exclusive benefit.
Quit whining and suing, Parler. If you want to spread your message, print your own pamphlets, the way Thomas Paine and other patriots did. If your ideas are good, the marketplace will respond. And if we read your screeds and see you’re traitors, well, you have only yourselves to blame for being shunned by decent Americans.
It’s pathetic that Twitter (Jack Dorsey), Amazon (Jeff Bezos), Google (Sundar Pichai), and even Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg) did more to countermand, silence the lies, law-breaking, insurrection, and sedition of trump than has the US Senate and 147 republican members of the US House of (non)Representatives.
The US Senate and the 147 republican members of the US House make it challenging to ‘believe’ in a democratic republic – or one claiming the ‘rule of law’ among its founding principles.
There is a 73% decrease in social media election lies and misinformation since they banned trump from social media, according the Washington Post citing folks who measure such.
Parler was the world’s #1 software application that was taken out by its competitor (Amazon hearts Twitter).
There were family photos, notes to lovers, pictures of babies, profound moments in nature – much of which has nothing to do with politics, that was destroyed when Amazon breached its contract.
Amazon’s actions – mark my words – just killed distributed cloud computing models.
If I had that stock, I would sell .. especially among the mid-major potential movers in what used to be a thriving and healthy market based on trust. There are hundreds of thousands of contracts designed in IT just like Parler’s with Amazon, specifically to create a trust prerequisite to give-up ownership control of hardware in return for managed services.
This was devastatingly moronic of Amazon and their dumb sisters.
If I didn’t know better, I would say Jack is trying to get himself shot in GITMO.

Oh Edwin, nobody’s wants to ban the speech of the lying losers in Parler or out of Parler or in your Parler. We need a record of the wonders of January 6 to be posted everywhere.

On-line publishers need to be responsible for what they publish. These publishers are NOT government agents, so should shoulder the same responsibilities as newspapers and other publishers.
I am not at all persuaded by the laments of the right being denied a place to publish and share lies or sedition planning. Any host for that ought to also be responsible for that content.

When a business denies people service because of their race, sex, or religion, conservatives say that’s tough; the Free Market (blessed be its name!) gets to decide. But when conservatives violate a company’s terms of service, and they haven’t bothered to make a backup of their files, suddenly the government should force the company to host them—even though hate speech, sedition, and incitement to riot aren’t exactly “protected classes” under the law (to put it mildly).
At first I was going to say it takes some complicated mental gymnastics to make that argument, but it really doesn’t. It’s just right-wingers whining that they should always get their way, no matter what. And hey, as a white guy I get all kinds of de facto privilege just by existing in this country, but I’d like to think I don’t screech like a metal lathe every time something doesn’t go my way.

Lest we forget with the concern trolls and absolute window licker John Dale are attempting to distract from– Amazon discontinued support of Parler due to it doing very little to prevent calls, and actual planning, of violence on its platform. And despite Dale’s proclamations- distributed cloud computing is not dead and will continue to grow as companies continue to acquire and store data. Or, you know, you can believe a guy who develops websites that look like old angelfire pages.
