Sioux Falls lawyer Taneeza Islam tells me there are over 300 immigrant children from Central America living in South Dakota without their parents to care for them or to help them through their immigration court proceedings. While Donald Trump throws tear gas at children on the border, how about we throw these immigrant children a legal lifeline?
This Giving Tuesday, South Dakota Voices for Peace has received a $5000 matching grant for our initiative called “Hand in Hand: Justice for Immigrant Children.” We are raising funds to develop and sustain legal and support services for the over 300 Unaccompanied Minors from Central America living in SD as well as children who were separated at the border from their parents who are being reunited and now living in SD. All of these children and parents are in immigration court proceedings and have an opportunity to seek asylum, yet most have no access to legal or support services in SD. 90% of children who go to immigration court without a lawyer will be sent back to the country they just fled. We believe that we can change that!
