Shannon Marvel reports in this morning’s Aberdeen American News on racist comments made about a young American Indian wrestler at last weekend’s big AAU tournament at the Barnett Center on the NSU campus. The comments were made out of earshot of the six-year-old competitor by tournament volunteers, but they were captured on video of the matches posted online. Paula Abbott Coome, grandmother of the young wrestler, posted her description of the racist comments in a public Facebook post April 6:
RACISM…ALIVE AND WELL IN SOUTH DAKOTA. My grandson, Nokosi Paul Ringing Shield and his buddy both won 4th place in their respective weight classes at the SDWCA state tournament. I was elated with their accomplishments. Last night I went over to my daughter’s home to view Nokosi’s matches on trackcast. I was horrified to hear commentators make the following comments about my grandson. “Nokosi Ringing Shield, what kind of name is that? He must be straight off the reservation in the hills.” And.. “look at that ponytail, he looks like a girl.” Laughter…”My bet is on the ponytail”…more laughter. Then later one of the men said all the Native names are long, like sentences.” One says something about all of them being poor and having bad habits. One referred to “udders” mooching off the government. Another said “My [f–ing] taxes pay for them.” One said.”Give me that ponytail. I’ll show you what I would do with it.” Laughter. My grandson is 6 years old. He is an innocent child. These vile remarks were made by 3 white males working at the South Dakota State Wresting tournament in Aberdeen, South Dakota. I am hurt and saddened by the remarks directed at my grandson. I am at a loss what to do….Sad Grandma [Paula Abbott Coome, Facebook post, 2016.04.06].
I haven’t been able to find public versions of the video in question—it may be locked down under Trackcast copyright—so I can’t confirm the actual statements.
But we know the types of men who mutter insults about six-year-old boys. Such men fall shorter of the definition of men than those six-year-old boys who had the courage to come to Aberdeen and wrestle in front of a big crowd.
The men making those comments didn’t expect to have an audience or to wrestle with the consequences of their racist cracks being heard above their own insecure sniggering. The publication of these racists’ remarks reminds us of the evolving nature of privacy. Sure, in public spaces, one has no legal expectation of privacy. But practically, we can lean over to a friend at a wrestling tournament, a park, a concert, or a bar and say things that no one else hears or pays attention to and that will thus remain just between us.
Now, however, with a majority of the people around us are carrying devices that can shoot pictures and video; with federal, state, and local agencies buying and deploying surveillance drones, unwise comments that used to disappear into the unverifiable ether of memory can now be captured and become part of the public record.
The solution, of course, is don’t be a racist jerk. The back-up solution is, don’t pick on little kids. And if both of those solutions are too hard for tournament volunteers and other regular folks, then, keep your racist, bullying comments to yourself… because nowadays, your comments might well not disappear after you and your buddies have had your sneer. They might bubble up on the Internet to remind you and the world of your unpleasantness.
Nothing to see here, I’m sure it can all be justified and explained away like the Trace O’Connell beer tossing incident last year at the Rapid City Civic Center.
Until the actual video and audio are published there will be denial upon denial.
Roger, I wonder: do we spare the young victims any grief by not making the video available publicly? I’m inclined to believe making the video public would serve more good than ill, especially in (a) substantiating the claim and (b) holding the speakers accountable, but what do you and others think?
Sad to hear about once again. The racism runs deep on both sides of the river that is until the Natives are needed to provide a source of scams or other benefits. The idea that South Dakota is a destination place for tourism is kind of strange in many ways. Tourists are interested in the Indians and many come here for that purpose. I personally have had these folks say that when they stopped for gas along the way they were told to stay away from the the reservations and anything to do with Indians. These kinds of actions regarding children seal the deal. The hockey game and now wrestling, it is plain to see that the Indian has got to be the scapegoat for all the problems the state suffers from. Stealing the land is one thing, stealing the youth is quite another.
Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Make the videos public and hold those who utter racist crap up for scorn. They might remain racists but with enough mocking maybe others will refrain from entering in on the racist actions.
I feel sad, and enraged. I hope the family is able to find redress. Sanction the commentators? Lawsuit for hate speech–then community service? Or, a restorative justice solution might look like this–have the commentators sit in a room and hear from a group of Native folks who speak from their hearts about this kind of thing and what it does to them and their children. If the do-ers have any humanity at all, they might experience remorse and change their thoughts and behavior.
Wonder if the big mouth is white and votes for wingnuts?
Cory, the video must be made available for all to see. It would confirm some of what Native Americans endure on a regular basis in South Dakota.
If the children haven’t heard these words directly said to them, they have heard family members share their stories of similar circumstances.
On a related note, a comedian named Ralpie May, I never heard of him, made similar stereotypical comments at his last performance. He is scheduled to appear in Sioux Falls at the Orpheum Theatre on Wed. There is a move on to get his show canceled.
A scheduled show in Bimidji is also being asked to cancel him.
It is disheartening to know that after all these years the same old stereotypes are repeated, but are being perpetuated. If somebody could please point me to where I could get some of this free “Indian Money”, I would love to have some of it.
This will get swept under the rug just like last year’s beer tossing incident at civic auditorium. A face book page will be made to honor these kids . It’ll pick up steam and then die down . And it will have been forgotten. It’s the same old same old. And the cycle will never break til someone makes a huge blaring statement . But life in Dakota country is so under wraps and most of our people don’t want the rest of the country and world in our business and its backwards thinking. It’s time to open up to the rest of the world about what goes on and how the wakanja are constantly being attacked .emotionally physically aand mentally. When they grow up they’ll be asked . Weren’t u the kid that so and so and such and such ? What did your family do about it ? And the response will probably be. ” nothing. They didn’t do anything at all. I’m not angry at the wasicu anymore . I’m angry with my own people because they always take this lying down and never fight back .
hit them where it hurts at last resort. if the comments were sanctioned by the school district as authorized or implicitely allowed coverage of a school athletic program, I would think ultimate authority rests with the school board to assure safe atmosphere at educational activities. it is why we think local school administration is so important. whoever was getting paid to be there and captured or made these comments could lose money.
beyond my limited capacities, I could show you dozens of similar comments preserved by name and address often, in the formal records of comments on the state Harney Peak name change record on-line. they can’t be screen-captured apparently.
Couple of things: AAU is NOT sponsored by a school district – it is an independent organization that may use a school’s facilities (pay rent). That being said, if it was at a school and proves to be true, AAU should deal with it or not use public facilities. Growing up in SD, these racist remarks are something that are muttered out loud by what I believe is a growing minority. I love the one suggestion that puts them into a room and have to listen to the harm they had done. I’m hoping it STOPS!! Everyone should visit a reservation and see for themselves what the conditions are that we have created and need to change!!
paul, yes, that too was a suggestion for the Phillip hockey event beer-slinger too, but as we know accountable confrontation like that may not occur without court sanction. Judges do fashion unique remedies, usually for shaming purposes rather than spurring community healing and growth.
will NSU be serving beer at these events? they are using student athletes to draw paying crowds, I assume.
The AAU Mission Statement should about cover it. The school that fielded the team or individuals that were trained in the school that was/were targeted must pursue this. Don’t put it just on the parents of the victims. Be proactive, protect student participants, I say.
“To offer amateur sports programs through a volunteer base for all people to have the physical, mental, and moral development of amateur athletes and to promote good sportsmanship and good citizenship.
Vision Statement
To offer amateur athletes and volunteers opportunities to develop to their highest level through a national and local network of sporting events. Through participation in AAU, we achieve our dreams as athletes and as valued citizens of our communities.
Sports for All, Forever
AAU”
imo
If there’s a video (credible evidence) I’ll keep my mouth closed about the wrestling tournament, which would be a completely different story than a long drawn out investigation on Trace O’Connell and a trial in which the Native American children said nothing racial happened and the judge said the accuser was not credible. To describe that as “explained away” is ludicrous.
Out of curiosity I googled Ralphie May. Consider what he has to say, and then watch his act from a few years ago. I’m not making a judgement on his act as I am still too shocked by it to know what to think, but he ridicules everyone including himself.
His explanation: Ralphie May: Racially Charged, Not Racist: http://tinyurl.com/j7fu697
His very politically incorrect act from 8 years ago: http://tinyurl.com/h5utxhr

kinda sounds like a bunch of school kids and their wrestling coaches are the participants. AAW and NSU aren’t gonna escape responsibility on a loop-hole. School boards very likely have potential to seriously “weigh-in” on such an issue/event. maybe not.
dunno what track cast is, who ralph may is, or acknowledge why HC is keeping Trace O’connell’s name front and center? thx?
“commentors” led me to think he/they were reporters. prolly just unfortunate video/audio crowd-capture of comments of local red-neck ignoramuses. fairly sure they are in that 46% republican SD registered voters, though, anecdotally, of course.
what a sad commentary on daily life in SD.
The video should be released. Accusations were made about the hockey game incident. I generally give people the benefit of the doubt, but figured the accusers weren’t making stuff up. Then we found reason to suspect otherwise.
Such incidents breed further distrust. Racism against native Americans exists; it shouldn’t need to be made up. So if there’s a video, it should be released.
This kind of talk is so common in South Dakota, but it still never ceases to amaze and disappoint me when I hear it. This is a six-year-old child learning what he wants to learn. Grandmother and parents and everyone else have reason to be proud of him. I would be, but not so proud of those who are older but haven’t learned that their bigotry doesn’t belong in this world. The talkers are the ones who are ignorant.
Start punching them in their mouths. Law enforcement won’t do it. Nobody will. Bring back the good old days when a fool would get popped in the mouth. Or the alternative. Do what everybody said they would right after the civic auditorium beer incident and shut rapid city down by hurting them economically . Get them in their pockets . But did anyone do it ? No!!! Our people still went out like the good patrons we are and continued to spend money at racist ass.establishments and continued to make rapid city wealthy. How hard can it be to drive to another city and to shop ? Boycott em. Plain and simple. Create such a panic economically that they’ll beg to hear our terms regarding justice and equality. Make history . !!!! Smfh

Well, you got bigotry and racism and Grudznick. iowa prolly has the same stuff except Grudz. What do we do about it? Words aren’t guns, but, the wounds certainly can hurt just as bad. Not everyone is equipped to handle insults and slurs. Not everyone can ignore them. Everyone reacts differently. What do we do?
Reading about Drumpf rallies makes me believe a MLK or JHC would be tarred and feathered in today’s world. It is really ugly out there and doesn’t look like it will improve any soon.
Leslie, I don’t think we need to dig into the school board angle. Paul is right: AAU and this tournament operate separately from school programs. AAU hosted it at NSU. This is AAU’s problem to resolve.
Of course, if the men involved in making these comments have day jobs in the public school system or the Regental system, their bosses ought to give them a stern talking-to. Coaches can lose jobs over this sort of thing.
I, too, like Carol’s suggestion. We need to talk face-to-face with our neighbors. We need to learn to speak about our neighbors exactly the way we would speak to our neighbors if they were right in front of us. That thought dovetails with my thought about privacy: increasingly the things we say about our neighbors can get back to our neighbors. Even if our hearts contain darkness, we need to learn to control that darkness better.
Why is that in South Dakota Native Americans have to have video evidence in order to prove racism, otherwise they are not credible?
Are all the stories of racism and stereotyping of Native Americans simply made up?
I wonder if those racist asses would have the courage to make their accusations directly to this mean old Indian. Probably not.
I would hope these men be held accountable for there words. We are not going to have justice until we make these racist people stop bullying my people. If people hate our skin color so much they need to leave to another country because the USA is all native soil and we are never leaving! We will rise above the hate and become so elite you will never see us again. We need to return to our safe homelands and make them so beautiful we will never wanna leave.
Beautifully written!! #truth
The videos are published I can show u them if u like thier on facebook
I signed up to view the videos from the tournament as my daughter wrestled in it. I watched her semifinal match and she did many things right before getting pinned. I looked up the videos for Nokosi and it indicated 6 videos were there to view. On 3 of the links, it told me there was no video to view. Those 3 links are now gone, yet his other 3 matches can be viewed.
Mike, send links!
Francis, congrats to your daughter making semis! You viewed the videos thru Trackcast, right? And 3 of the videos of the child in question are unavailable through their service?
Cory
Thank you. I could not view 3 of them as there was no video for the link. The next time I looked the links were gone. The site is Track Wrestling, I paid 9.99 to view the matches on Trackcast.
Roger, I can see where you’re coming from, and I don’t want to provoke you or any other mean old Indian. :-)
I am inclined to believe the story—it seems unlikely that folks would make up a story based on a video that can be checked by others. Nonetheless, I’d like the exact comments on the record, as I hope I would want in any similar case of objectionable, possibly actionable language.
Well heck, Francis! You should call Trackcast and tell them you want your money’s worth! Tell them to put those videos back up!
It could be that Trackcast has pulled the videos for completely honorable reasons. Maybe they don’t want to be broadcasting such racist content. Maybe they are editing a copy of the video to omit the offensive audio. Of course, they had better edit a copy while preserving the original. After all, if any action takes place—civil rights complaint, grievance from the volunteers for being punished, either side—Trackcast had better preserve the evidence.
Suggestion: make some kind of anti-bigotry course a required subject in colleges and high schools and middle schools all over the state. With a required grade, and the grade has to be EARNED, not pass-fail. Native American teachers, lawyers, artists, Original essays, research, field trips, tests, the whole schmear. No, it won’t change everything, but it’s a start. Somebody’s teaching them this cr*p, somebody unteach it. If they can require art history and so forth (not that I have a problem with that), they can certainly require kids to unlearn some of the messed-up mouthiness they learn at home and on the streets.
This incident is shameful; pathetic men ridiculing a child, and a culture to make themselves feel as if they have some power in their sad and empty lives.
It makes me ashamed of my European heritage.
Hearing jeers from rubes at sports events is just another brick in the wall as to what outside society these children will grow into. In my opinion, the elephant is in the room regarding youth suicide in Indian Country, is called racism and bigotry that is perpetuated by decades of the same hate that has existed since the theft of the lands.
The racial bigotry will only get worse as the elections season comes closer to November. It is just about time that the republicans will trot out the old voter fraud nonsense that they are famous for cycle after cycle here in South Dakota. Starting from the Attorney General on down, Marty will not be able to help himself as he looks to occupy the chair once seated by his mentor, Short Rounds, in decrying a made up foul. The cycle’s must change for the betterment of all. Indian Lives Matter
You say in the article that you couldn’t confirm the actual comments. Then you go onto seem to confirm them? Is that responsible reporting?
This just makes me sad and anger at the same time. How do you make somebody be a decent loving adult?
These bigots did not learn this venomous talk on-their-own – – it was acquired & learned; sadly, in many cases . . . at home. I beg that those who were offended will “rise-above” and offer forgiveness thus demonstrating their “real-strengths”… My wise & tough father taught me 50+ years-ago that “Forgiveness” is absolutely the toughest guy on the block, and that “Apology” is his best friend”. I am sad that about such ignorance is still displayed. I shall pray & meditate for those who were wronged, as-well-as those who feel the need to inflict such pain.
Rick, as a lifelong skeptic and part Vulcan, I recognize that there are always possibilities. Anything we think we know for certain could turn out to be a mistake. I don’t claim to know anything for certain about the racist comments attributed to as-yet unnamed AAU tournament volunteers. However, the veracity of the statements of Nichole Ringing Shield and Paula Abbott Coome seem to be supported by the following:
That sounds like responsible reporting. Do you, Rick, have any reason to doubt the statements of the family, the NSU coach, and the AAN reporter?
“Coome refers to video evidence that could be easily checked by journalists.” Apparently not or we would be watching it.
Racism is an emotional subject people assume to be true. Guilty until proven innocent. Even here on this thread 3 people keep saying Trace O’Connell was guilty when he was proven innocent. After that long drawn out ordeal he was offered no apologies or regrets by the multitudes who condemned him. The things made up on that story were despicable.
A couple weeks ago a young African American woman accosted a young white guy with dreadlocks saying he was appropriating her culture. She was taunting him (before the video began also) trying to create something, pulling at him before saying “Don’t put your hands on me.” She got quite a shock when she realized it was being video taped.
So sure it’s easy to assume. Why would people falsely accuse or try to make trouble, but it happens so why jump to conclusions? Just remain skeptical. Let the facts come in. Sure seems like people can’t get over prejudging everything which like duh is where racism comes from.
http://college.usatoday.com/2016/03/30/video-of-san-francisco-state-u-altercation-over-dreadlocks-goes-viral/
If there are no races, how can you have any racism? How can you have any racism if you don’t have races?
If you don’t eat yer meat, how can you have any pudding? How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat yer meat?
Here is what rilly happened, HC. The vids were posted on line, but us bleeding heart libs decided to erase the incriminating ones to freak you out. I’m almost believing if it wasn’t for Zapgruder’s film, JFK would still be alive and 99 years old.
Roger, I know that Native Americans do not fabricate stories of racism. I do not want to say I was skeptical in the O’Connell case — there were inconsistencies in the accounts that were available, and I hoped that both sides could see the danger in branding a person a racist under such circumstances. That’s not to say the events did not happen, and if they did, the guilty party/parties should be punished. We seem to have such evidence in the case of the idiotic, bigoted AAU folks.
Thanks for the laugh mfi, Pink Floyd’s “On the Turning Away” could have relevance here.
I have to slip back in to what Cory said, how else are we gonna talk about? I still believe the biological differences are minor and don’t warrant labeling each other. It just institutionally reinforces we must be different, especially when at young ages we are forced to mark White, African American, etc.
happy, in a criminal case the defendant is never proven to be “innocent.” Rather, the jury or court determines whether the prosecution has proved guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Think of the O.J. Simpson case. Although one jury acquitted him of the criminal charges of murder, another jury found that he did commit the murder in a civil case. The difference was in the burden of proof – reasonable doubt vs. a preponderance of the evidence.
While I have no idea whether O’Connell did the things he was accused of, I do know that his acquittal in the criminal case did not, and does not, prove that he was innocent.
And now Happy Camper will attempt to lure us into favorite hobby horse of there is only one race, the human race.
By following him into that rabbit hole we will lose focus at what in Aberdeen.
Good point BCB and it’s more than just a technical one, though I followed that case very closely and read all the transcripts. Consuelo Means story didn’t make sense. She was only one reporting direct contact on the events, and then when the kids said it didn’t happen, the judge said she was not credible, shouldn’t we call him innocent? Or is everyone going to be just not guilty for the rest of their lives? With your background I think you would agree a rush to judgement is dangerous and unnecessary. Even if as a general statement people don’t make up racism and this case likely true, when we talk about specific incidents we have to be fair. I’m reminded too much of the The Ox-Bow Incident. If we don’t want people to rashly believe in stereotypes but get to know others, then in the same way we should withhold judgement.
What was O’Connell innocent of? He admitted to spilling a beer on Indian kids, did he not? Was it malicious? Who knows? It did happen, though. Wasn’t he an adult at the time? Should he have known better? I’m guessing had he dropped a beer bottle and injured a child there would have been more serious charges and probably a civil action,as well.
Roger Cornelius sir with all due respect, the focus on what’s at aberdeen has already been lost. While solutions are only discussed here in theory, it’s a win for the enemy here which is not actual physical human beings but a state of mind thought and tone. This can be solved By one of two ways. We already know what those are.everyone wants peace safety and security and to enjoy an event without having to worry about what century we are living in and going to sleep at night tossing and turning and wondering why things haven’t changed in so many centuries.mention of what one might do to a child with a pony tail simply because he has one ambiguously is sickening and disheartening . One may feel that they have nothing to prove by going out and fighting for these things to stop. But what would it cost in light of securing a life of ease for our wakanja (sacred little ones) discussing the solutions without going out and putting them into practical application leaves a person feeling lost and hopeless..maybe speak loud into a Mic whenever there’s an event . ” there is to be no uttering of racial slurs and so on and so forth ” anyone can grab a bullhorn and speak. Maybe it’ll provoke thought and cause people to think twice . Let em know how important they are by voicing it and in that people like this elder who over heard remarks will know their feelings are just as important too
While I’m on my soap box- damage done to a 6 year old child’s psyche could hurt far more than a knife or bullet wound. Mental scars last far longer than physical ones. Anyone who has been seriously bullied could tell you that.
Perhaps the biggest problem in such cases is the unreliability of eye witness testimony. Often an individual’s perception of events is colored by unconscious internal bias. Most researchers conclude that actual eyewitness testimony is substantially less reliable and accurate than other forms of evidence.
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-the-eyes-have-it/
An interesting example occurs in that great old film, “12 Angry Men,” which explores the minds and bias of jurors in a criminal case as they consider whether to accept eye witness testimony presented by the prosecution. Honest people see and hear the exact same event differently.
“unreliability of eye witness testimony” vs. “when the kids said it didn’t happen”. sprinkle in the “Means” name and uhoooo, … happy – get outta my armchair!
was the prosecutor unable to prevent child witnesses from being led by considerably more experienced, astute defense counsel? I could prolly get a kid to say anything under stress.
without reliable video capture, i’ll have to stand with the adult chaperones, biases intact, albeit rather than testimony of the rich&privileged drunks in the sky box.
magistrate judge. municipal lawyer with little criminal expertise. unappealable. allender’s and red-neck pennington county commission’s finest investigators. high profile community tension…recipe for a nightmare.
SD’s republican law enforcement keeps getting less and less credible. Politicization of institutions for profit is leading us to a world of hurt for everyone, not just minorities.
happy-censorship is as easy as a deleted digital video. or an FAA closure to prevent drone aerial photography of an oil spill. create a valid reason for the censorship, and presto, trace walks, TC walks, GOP walks and SCOTUS is eviscerated…yahdah yah….
TRANSPARENCY Tidemann! Judge Davis! Daugaard! …. hmm, all republicans.
now certainly if dems ever get into persuasive position of power in SD, we’ll be subject to all the same temptations, but we come with a different world view.
oh, I know, nationally Hillary just can’t be trusted. say it enough Faux, but it still ain’t true, i’m betting.
Yes Mike I was bullied and harassed every day of high school for being gay and my gay friends and I thought everything negative that happened to us was discrimination. Some of it was but we kept that mental preoccupation well in to our 20s blaming every lack of promotion, disagreement or whatever immediately because we were gay. It took getting comfortable with who we were, accepting what we could change bla bla bla before moving beyond it. Some people refuse to accept what role they play and won’t look at anything internal. They see it as all external. Maybe in some cases that’s more acceptable than changing. Therapy helps. I’m sure you’ve met people who absolutely will not go but stay in torment. Everybody needs a healthy dose of inner peace.
here it is. @ 2:03 and 2:17 a bulky marine physically threatens scrawny protestors who do not back down, challenge his patriotism and defense of cops at a Black Lives Matter rally. the scrawny guy’s girl friend threatens the marine 3xs her size with news coverage. the racist language is as bad as you can get. just like on the vanished AAU videos, I am guessing.
jumping to judgement isn’t the problem. the problem is racism in 2016 all over SD.

As Bear notes, eyewitnesses can get things wrong. That’s why the tech revolution that puts cameras in everyone’s hands is so remarkable: a lot more eyewitness testimony can now be backed up with camera testimony.
Hap is right, though, that apparently, this video isn’t as easy to come by as I thought. Still, the complainants (and we aren’t in court yet, so perhaps my using that term overdoes it) are referring to video evidence. To fabricate the existence of such evidence puts one in a very tenuous spot. I don’t think they’d take that chance… and I don’t think Shannon Marvel was just talking “as if” she’d seen the video; her language indicates she saw it. She did not write, “Coome says the video shows….” She just said, “The video shows….”
“Words” hurt children and lessens us all.
Whether the video is true or not, I dont see a single charge that would hold up in court.
The Blindman
Blindman. I don’t think anyone is calling for criminal charges.
If you’re gonna be a skeptic and a journalist you can’t say this must be true cause another journalist said it was true, and she wouldn’t have said that unless she saw it. You have to see it. Leslie does the same thing. Pulls out Dawkins when it suits him. When it helps his argument otherwise you both just go with what you want to think must be true. You can’t be a part time skeptic emotional Vulcan.
Happy Camper
I was at the tournament, signed up, paid the fee to view any and all the matches. I watched my daughter’s matches to see if she needs additional coaching. She does many things well. I then looked for the videos of Nokosi Paul Ringing Shield, I found 6 of 6 put 3 of the links didn’t have videos attached. The next time I checked those 3 links were removed. At the current time, I believe it is impossible for anyone to see the video evidence which in fact does exist. I am not a reporter yet these are facts believe them or not.
Happy, did you see any dilbit that spilled near Freeman? As far as I know there wasn’t any video of the spill, but, I damn sure know it happened. And I don’t even live in South Dakota. Can you honestly say none spilled because there is no video record?
Unsubscribe me pls
Mr. Vann, you are unsubscribed
I’m writing from Hawai’i. I’m taking the time because this is deeply disturbing. I heard that Lakota children have the highest suicide rate in the nation. So this isn’t just racist remarks hurting, it’s racism killing children.
mfi, you bring a good point about the so called “spill” in Freeman. I have seen no video’s of the spill and only heard some white guy (I presume) by the name of Heckinliable say there was 187 gallons spilled. Then someone else said more, then someone else said 16,800 exactly. How do I know? Maybe Mr. Heckinliable, if that is his real name, had a tranny go out and spilled some oil and then blamed poor Transcanada for his mishap. Free people from Freeman looking for free money.
Racial taunts to children happen all over, this is one in Wisconsin. Wisconsin used to be a blue state but now, the reds have taken over and it is butt ugly. http://m.channel3000.com/news/district-investigating-racist-chants-directed-at-beloit-soccer-players/38950592 When all else fails, target the children, for they cannot do anything but cry and become hardened.
It matters little whether this episode can be verified or if it’s partially true or fiction. This kind of speech can be heard in every Country Club locker room, every bar and tavern and everywhere men (and sadly some women) gather in South Dakota.
It’s sad that people have such low self-esteem they must build themselves up by tearing others down. Have you ever said to a bigot that their speech is offensive? It was once said to me and it made me very retaliatory and defensive but it changed me in the long run. Maybe that’s why I fight bullies, now.
http://www.stopbullying.gov/kids/what-you-can-do/
Porter Lansing, you talk pretty high and mighty for someone with the morals of pig. Do you remember saying this?
” That pole-barn you call a business is a disgrace to your dead brother Carson and so are you. Someday, I’ll drop by and piss in the indoor sewer that someone’s conning your half-blind ass into believing is a swimming pool … you know, there on Highway Cc outside of Gilman. PS … What’s in the dome? Weed garden?”
Of course we know now how little there is to fear from a pussy like yourself. Really you thought you could come down and beat on me? Well get after it candy ass.
Cory you can delete all you want but those post never go away.
The Blindman
Thanks, Dithmer. What could you have said about Mr. Heidelbergers teen daughter that would have made me go into “bully busting” mode on you?
Thats just it Porter, I never said a thing about about Corys daughter. That was your imagination. Find what you think I said and post it.
Your a lowlife Porter. You talk about political correctness and spout your own kind of snide insults trying to cover youe wortless behind.
The Blindman PS this never goes away Porter.
Pls unsubscribe me from thread
Thank you
I don’t understand what Mr. H’s children have to do with this. Were they at this wrestling dual?
Dithmer … It was lewd and sexually suggestive. I’ll not repeat it and you won’t, either. That means it’s gone away. I stand fully by what I said. You’re a pervert with no filter when you drink whiskey. Like Ethan Coen said about where you live, “No Country For Old Men”. And that story turned out well, huh?
Grudz-this is an old grudge from awhile back. I had hoped it was over with.
I, for one, think I would rather enjoy listening to some of Mr. Dithmer’s stories after he’s been drinking whiskey. I would have some with him.
My apologies to anyone reading Dithmer’s outburst. He comes from a guilty soul. Last word is your’s on this subject, Bad Bill. I’ll be listening.
There is warped and there is seriously warped. Speaking ill of a 6 year old boy is seriously warped.
The naughiest and most ill-mannered 6 year old having a temper tantrum is still more innocent than the best teenager or adult.
wat is it wit these old dudes getin all mad? got perter and dither dat need to chill out wit the plant. then we got the old rasists talkin bad bout these kids. need love not hate!!!!!!!!!!
Cut it out,Troy. You sounded like a normal, compassionate human being and I’m not sure I can handle that.
I don’t smoke pot, Kris. I prolly know more about it than most in SoDak but how could you not? There’s an entire section on it in every daily newspaper. Marijuana in Colorado is just like pheasants in SoDak. You might not hunt but almost everybody has extended knowledge about pheasants. However, I do find it demeaning to need tell the public whether I smoke it or not. Once it becomes legal up there it won’t be up for judgement by busy body old women with pain pill addictions any longer.
Put up or shut [] up Porter. If you threaten me you must mean it. Im guessing you cant find the post that your looking for.
You talk about taking the higher ground then spit off color jabs like pissing in my pool, come on are you a man or a little baby boy?
These post will follow you wherever you go Porter.
The Blindman
Come on Cory help Porter find that post hes looking for so we can all see it. I have it right here, nope there is nothing of what hes talking about there.

[Sorry about the delay, Craig. Yesterday, it looked like you were indeed unsubscribed. But then I noticed you used two different e-mails, which meant two separate subscriptions. [Not that the conversation benefits from promoting Bill D and Porter’s argument, but the November 8, 2015, comment to which Bill D refers is here: https://dakotafreepress.com/2015/11/08/flandreau-whacks-weed-for-now/#comment-23300. Now, let’s get back to the six-year-old boy who is the real victim here.]
Hap, skepticism does not oblige me to deny everything. I can still posit that Shannon Marvel meant what she said. It is true that the local editors may not have followed up on the story, but I have no reason to believe that our skepticism wouldn’t also have come up in the editorial room when Marvel brought them this story: Hang on, Shannon, did you see the video yourself? Oh, you did? O.K., we can run the story.
The men and women that comment on Dakota Free Press are used to having some sort of threat or abuse on a regular basis, since we are adults we can for the most part handle it. Knowing it is not likely any physical abuse will come from any threats we move on.
Disrespect and verbal abuse of young Indian children is another matter, or should be.
To my knowledge, Porter has never been disrespectful of Native Americans, other minorities, or segments of society.
Bill Dithmer on the other hand has a history of condemning Native Americans and their lifestyle virtually every time Cory has a Native American thread.
Disrespect and verbal abuse of young children is another matter.
Roger, you just dont like the truth.
Bill Dithmer on the other hand has a history of condemning Native Americans.
You are a lier. You just dont like the things I say because they arent approved by you.
Yup we are all grownups here, so if someone threTwned to blacken both of your eyes and piss in your pool, you wouldnt even have just the littlest problem?
Roger you pull that damned race card out so much its suprising you can still read it.
The Blindman
Dithmer,
I know you are blind, but how are blind are you?
I did not play the race card, in the event you missed it, this whole thread was supposed to be about racism directed at a 6 years Native American boy, not about Bill Dithmer and his little hurt feelings.
is that like a white-privilege card?
‘it is inconvenient to know: “Yes, bad things happened in the past, but let us put all of that behind us and march on to a glorious future, all sharing equally in the rights and opportunities of citizenry.” The appalling statistics of today’s circumstances of African-American life can be confronted by other bitter residues of a shameful past, laments about black cultural inferiority, or worse, forgetting how our wealth and privilege was created in no small part by the centuries of torture and degradation of which we are the beneficiaries and they remain the victims. As for the very partial and hopelessly inadequate compensation that decency would require — that lies somewhere between the memory hole and anathema.
myths continue to the present….the King of England granted a Charter to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1629, declaring that conversion of the Indians to Christianity is “the principal end of this plantation.” The colonists at once created the Great Seal of the Colony, which depicts an Indian holding a spear pointing downward in a sign of peace, with a scroll coming from his mouth pleading with the colonists to “Come over and help us.”
[another:] later Supreme Court Justice Story mused “the wisdom of Providence” that caused the natives to disappear like “the withered leaves of autumn” even though the colonists had “constantly respected” them[; and,]
Gen. Henry Knox, the first secretary of war described “the utter extirpation of all the Indians in most populous parts of the Union [by means] more destructive to the Indian natives than the conduct of the conquerors of Mexico and Peru.”
Helen Jackson’s book in 1880 provided a detailed account of that “sad revelation of broken faith, of violated treaties, and of inhuman acts of violence [that] will bring a flush of shame to the cheeks of those who love their country” but book barely sold.
Theodore Roosevelt explained that “The expansion of the peoples of white, or European, blood during the past four centuries…has been fraught with lasting benefit to most of the peoples already dwelling in the lands over which the expansion took place,” notably those who had been “extirpated” or expelled to destitution and misery’, says Chomsky.
