Trump Violates Own Visa Ban to Help Bolsonaro Flee Brazil

Since January, the Trump Administration has refused to issue visas to immigrants from 75 countries. The State Department continues to drag its feet on approving visas for immigrants from those countries, even though a court ordered the feds to lift that ban in August.

Brazil is on that visa-ban list, but Trump is letting Brazilian Flávio Bolsonaro and his family jump the barricade and come to America immediately:

The United States says it will issue visas to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family, amid multiple reports that the defeated Brazilian presidential candidate has left the country following Sunday’s election. His whereabouts have not been independently confirmed.

…On Tuesday a senior U.S. administration official said that the State Department would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family, allowing them to enter the country [Carrie Kahn, “U.S. to Issue Visas to Flávio Bolsonaro as His Whereabouts Remain Unclear,” NPR: Morning Edition, 2026.10.27].

Further belying its specious claim that its brutal anti-immigrant policy is focused on removing “the worst of the worst” from our country, the Trump Administration is helping Bolsonaro evade criminal investigation and the orders of Brazil’s highest court not to leave the country:

Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro may have fled the country after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes barred him from traveling abroad, following his defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential runoff.

The travel ban was imposed as part of a criminal investigation into Bolsonaro’s ties to Willer Tomaz, a lawyer and longtime friend suspected of money laundering. De Moraes also ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports within 24 hours and barred him from contacting Tomaz.

…Bolsonaro faces at least two criminal investigations before Brazil’s Supreme Court. In the case involving Tomaz, Federal Police investigators identified suspected financial ties between the two men after examining a phone seized from the lawyer during an investigation into fraud involving Brazil’s social security system. The findings included records suggesting Bolsonaro had access to a bank account associated with one of Tomaz’s companies. Both have denied wrongdoing.

A separate investigation concerns suspected financial irregularities involving Daniel Vorcaro, the former owner of Banco Master, a Brazilian bank shut down by regulators in November 2025 amid charges of financial fraud. Vorcaro has been held in pretrial detention since March [Lucía Cholakian Herrera and Marília Marasciulo, “Flávio Bolsonaro Reportedly Flees Brazil for US After Travel Ban,” Courthouse Service News, 2026.10.27].

Once again, Trump’s talk of law and order is baloney. This Republican administration doesn’t care about the protecting us from criminals; it just cares about using its power to protect its pals.
