King Don isn’t dismantling democracy just because he likes to be king. To sustain his increasing concentration of wealth, King Don has to quash the democratic forces that normally check government actions that benefit only a few elites rather than all members of society:
Individual economic well-being is a common demand in democratic nations. Democratic governments might respond to this demand through the institutionalization of either socialist or capitalist economies or some blending of the two as is the case in our nation. Individual economic well-being does not require an equal distribution of wealth, but it does require that the government fosters an economic environment that ensures that even the least wealthy among us experience economic adequacy.
Excess concentration of wealth may deprive the least wealthy of a sense of adequacy which may result in more citizens challenging the effectiveness of the government. In addition, an excess concentration of wealth can lead to an accompanying concentration and abuse of political power. An abuse of political power, in turn, can lead to more citizens expressing and acting on the failure of government to protect them from the abuses [Bob Burns, “On Maintaining a Stable Democracy,” Brookings Beacon, 2025.12.03].
Showing up to vote isn’t just about preserving Constitutional rights or abstract philosophical ideals. Practicing democracy is about making sure that kings and cons don’t run away with our gold and that we all get a piece of the economic pie that we bake every day.
