In its detailed report on the switch in political focus from building a new prison to working on rehabilitation to reduce the number of South Dakotans behind bars, South Dakota News Watch reminds us that South Dakota’s prisons are holding 3,694 inmates in facilities meant to hold only 2,775:

The new prison approved last week will have 1,488 beds. That’s 1,062 more beds than the 1881 penitentiary it will replace is supposed to have and enough to fit the 919 over capacity we had in 2024.
South Dakota is already a prison so why bother to codify it?
Are we locking up too many? Maybe increasing capacity isn’t the real answer to our problem?
the US incarcerates women at the highest rate: 112 per 100,000. SD leads the US at a rate over 3x the national average: 338 per 100,000. SD’s incarceration rate for men only puts us in 15th. We must not allow men to fall behind!
Let you all stand informed by grudznick, Ms. Taffy and Ms. Hulse voted “no.” They will be unelected by Conservatives with Common Sense. Insaner than most as they may be, they are both very pretty, and might fight back with posters, and that is always effective. Eh, Lar?
My dear grudznick, although your fellow conservatives with common sense number in the teens, I believe neither your voters nor your candidates stand a chance against the MAGA cult that has hijacked the voters and candidates of the organization one known as the GOP (RIP).
