The Aberdeen school district opens today, gathering kids for orientation and a quick tour of classes before starting real teaching on Wednesday. But the families who have chosen to help out by pre-de-densifying campus and having their kids take online classes for the first quarter will see their children’s education delayed a day or two….
The first full day of school is Wednesday, August 19, 2020. However, EDGENUITY IS EXPERIENCING SOME TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES. Over the weekend, our platform broke several times and they are working quickly to get this fixed. Please be patient and check back on Thursday or Friday to see if it is up and running. If you do not see courses for your child, that is why. Edgenuity has reassured me they are working to get this fixed as soon as possible. Sorry for the short delay [Aberdeen Public Schools, e-mail to parents, 2020.08.17].
We haven’t even opened our online books, and already Aberdeen’s chosen solution for parents who’d like a little more pandemic protection for their kids is already is already creating more separate and unequal conditions for its students.
In other signs that South Dakota’s school pandemic reboot won’t go smoothly, we’re already canceling sporting events due to coronavirus:
Estelline/Hendricks will not play either of its first two games of the 2020 football season, South Dakota High School Activities Association assistant executive director John Krogstrand confirmed Monday night.
The Redhawks were scheduled to host Dell Rapids St. Mary on Friday, then travel to Alcester-Hudson next week. Their bye week is scheduled for Sept. 4.
“The game has been canceled is basically what we were told,” DRSM athletic director Casey Michel said. “(We were told) it was COVID related.”
Citing privacy concerns, Krogstrand was unable to confirm whether or not there are any positive cases within the Estelline/Hendricks football program [Brian Haenchen, “High School Football: Estelline/Hendricks Cancels Opener Vs. Dell Rapids St. Mary,” that Sioux Falls paper, 2020.08.17].
Edgenuity had better install several more servers: I stand by my prediction that a third of the schools that are trying to reopen “normally” this month will close again by the end of September.
Football coops across state lines are okay?
Yeah. None of the schools will stay open for in person attendance for long, except the military academies and other boarding schools.
Buy stock in Edgenuity! It will be a big part of the 2020-2021 Educational-Industrial Complex.
I wonder how many administrators have side deals with private firms? If we had public newspapers on the local level we might have a chance answer that question.
