State Approves New Math/English Standards; Public Yawns

The state Board of Education Standards adopted new curriculum standards yesterday for English, math, health, Native American studies, and some career/technical fields. And after all the effort Common-Core-alarmed legislators made in 2012 to mandate public input on new standards, the public responded to the open discussion of curriculum standards with overwhelming collective apathy:

No one other than state presenters testified Monday morning at the fourth and final public hearing the South Dakota Board of Education Standards held on changes to 10 subject areas including math, English and tribal culture.

…Six educators from western South Dakota public schools testified at the Jan. 26 public hearing in Rapid City. The hearing in Sioux Falls last year drew one commenter while Aberdeen had none. All were held during workdays [Bob Mercer, “South Dakota Board of Education Standards Adopts School Content Standards,” Rapid City Journal, 2018.03.20].

Nobody really cared about the standards in 2012 when the Legislature adopted House Bill 1128 to force four public hearings on every round of standards review. They just wanted to holler about Barack Obama and the evil Marxist plot to brainwash our children with Common Core. Sit down to talk about actual classroom standards, and everyone falls asleep under the dull drone of absolutely unsubversive eduspeak.

Next year the board tackles standards for personal finance, library, and world languages. Peut-être je peux animer la discussion en témoignant en français….

    Mais oui, ce sera divertissant!

  2. Je préfèrais voyager encore à Paris que soufrir une discussion de standards de programme.
