I don’t know about the rest of you, but the Legislative districts criss-crossing Brown County are fielding full slates of Democrats.
District 1, one of the few Democratic strongholds, will have its usual slate of hard-to-beat Democrats, with Rep. Susan Wismer of Britton switching to run for the Senate seat Jason Frerichs is leaving. Allison Renville of Sisseton has also signaled an interest in that Senate seat. The Democratic House candidates are still petitioning, but they have one filed Republican challenger, Tamara St. John of Sisseton. District 1 includes a northern chunk of Brown County.
Mike McHugh of Aberdeen filed his petition to run for District 2 House last Thursday. He joins Democrat Jenae Hansen of Turton in the House race. Democrat Paul Register has filed for the District 2 Senate race. District 2 includes a southern majority of Brown County and the southwest corner of Aberdeen.
The only candidates filed in District 3 are Republicans, but we Democrats are out petitioning right now. I’ll challenge Al Novstrup for his Senate Seat, and we’re fielding candidates again for both of the House seats. No sign yet of primary challengers, and we only have another eleven days to get our petitions to Secretary Krebs in Pierre. District 3 includes most of Aberdeen and all of Bath Township.
Statewide by the count available before breakfast today, There are 67 filed candidates for the South Dakota House—46 GOP, 18 Dem, 2 Libertarian, and 1 Indy— and 28 candidates filed for Senate—22 GOP, 6 Dem.
“Just two years ago, Trump won this district by 20 points. Two years before that, Democrats didn’t even bother running an opponent against the Republican incumbent. You know, I’m really enjoying this radical new Democratic strategy called ‘trying.’ ”
Samantha Bee said that. SD Democrats ought to give it more of a shot.
Excellent, Debbo. I recommend all Democrats follow my example. :-)
