South Dakota Demography Conference October 7-9 in Rapid City

SDDemogConfJohn Tsitrian is right: the South Dakota Demography Conference sounds like a blast! South Dakota Dashboard and the SDSU Rural Life and Census Data Center are hosting the third annual demography event on the School of Mines campus in Rapid City, Wednesday, October 7 through Friday, October 9.

The conference theme is “Forecasting the Rural/Urban Divide in South Dakota.” Among the speakers announced so far are these heavy academic hitters:

  • Dr. Ken Beauchemin, Assistant Vice President and Policy Analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, on the economic health of metropolitan areas in the Northern Great Plains.
  • State demographer Dr. Weiwei Zhang, SDSU, on South Dakota’s changing population
  • Dr. Richard Braunstein, USD who has recently completed a study of race and policing in Rapid City.

Register by September 15, and you can hear these speakers and more for 10% off the $124 conference registration fee. Head for the Hills and talk big South Dakota numbers!

(By the way, the SDSU Rural Life and Census Data Center appears not to have updated the data it provides online since before 2010. Thank goodness for the South Dakota Dashboard, which is bubbling with more current data. Take a cue, SDSU, and crank out some data for public use!)
