Noem Peddles False Equivalency to Avoid Holding Trump Accountable for Lies

Congresswoman Kristi Noem tries to minimize Donald Trump’s destructive pathological lying by faintly claiming that every White House is full of crap:

Noem says elected officials can’t mislead the public.

Noem says questionable information coming from the White House is not unique to the Trump Administration [Todd Epp, “Noem: What Are the Facts in Washington, D.C.?” KELO Radio, 2017.06.15].

Come on, Kristi: wear this shirt to the White House! [Rep. Kristi Noem, Facebook photo, 2015.12.25].
Come on, Kristi: wear this shirt to the White House! [Rep. Kristi Noem, Facebook photo, 2015.12.25].

Once again, we must reject the false equivalency to which apologists for the worst president ever resort when they can muster no logical defense of Trump’s words and actions. Sure we can find false statements made by Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, and other occupants of the White House. But I challenge Congresswoman Noem to identify any other White House that has lied with either the rate or brazenness of Donald Trump.

Kristi should know better. She has kids. If she catches Booker with his hand in the cookie jar, I doubt her first reaction is, “Oh, Kennedy and Kassidy snuck cookies before dinner, too.” The proper parental reaction is, “Booker! Get your hands out of the cookie jar!”

Everybody else did it does not excuse us from holding accountable the people who are doing it now. Congresswoman Noem, grow a conscience, and hold Donald Trump accountable for his unpresidential lies.

Trump leads police on a high speed chase, crashing into police cars blocking the road and ultimately being stopped by spike strips.

Noem’s response: “Clinton and Obama had speeding tickets too.”

NOem’s cult talking points, courtesy of the RNC https://twitter.com/PhilipRucker/status/875166972614516737

Cult republicans have no idea what an honest thought or idea might be. Their wealthy benefactors spoon feed the mannerisms and the way the must deliver the lie to their constituents. You wonder how far the hand is up the backside from the puppet masters. How far NOem, how far? What a fraud just like her opponent Jackboot Jackley, birds of a feather.

The needle of the republican’s moral compass will always point to the dollar sign, eh ?

  4. jerry 2017-06-15 10:29

Thune is not on the same page as NOem, how can this be?
“Sen. John Thune (R-SD) defended the special counsel put in charge of the Justice Department’s investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 on Thursday, disputing President Donald Trump’s claim earlier Thursday morning that he was the subject of an investigatory “witch hunt.””

It would be wise, if not simply right, to leave her kids’ names out of the discussion if you need to make the point.

  6. jerry 2017-06-15 11:28

Noem and Jackley long ago, waived bye bye to law and order as have the rest of the cult republicans. Now they trash former FBI director Mueller. Neut Gingrich, one of the biggest frauds ever, says this “Mueller is setting up a dragnet of obstruction, financial questions and every aspect of Trump’s life and his associates lives.very dangerous” Mueller is going after where the money comes from, a taboo in cult republican world. It is all about their God, money. Earning it the old fashioned way, stealing it.

… blame Obama until you can’t blame him any more.
PS … (Using Kennedy, Kassidy (Is that from Neal Cassady? 📚) and Booker’s names in an analogy is perfectly wise and right. Criticizing or holding those kids responsible for the actions of their Mom, is not)

“Everybody will have great health insurance” –
“No one will lose coverage” “Health care will be a lot less expensive” – Donald Trump on his campaign, 2016.

  9. Porter Lansing 2017-06-15 12:16

“Your insurance will be so good, you may even get tired of how good it is and you’ll say please, please Mr. president, It’s too good! We can’t take it anymore!”

Ben, I considered that, but note that I linked to one of Noem’s many tweets where she broadcasts her children’s names. I mention them as matters of public record. As Porter notes, I do not cast aspersions on them in any way. I even put her son’s possible cookie-snatchery in the conditional, not positing that he would actually spoil his supper. ;-)

Now Ror, don’t go bringing up Kristi’s old speeding tickets! :-D

  11. Roger Cornelius 2017-06-15 12:43

    Ben,
When Noem announced her first run for congress she used her children in her announcement, she has since consistently used them in Facebook and Tweet postings.
While I agree that her children should not be used in debate, you have to remember that she made them a part of that debate.

Trump’s lies are catching up to him sooner that I thought as he is now under criminal investigation for obstruction of justice.
As many of us recall from the Watergate investigation this is how Nixon was caught and later had to resign, it wasn’t the actual charge of obstruction of justice, it was lying about his role in the Watergate break-in and the subsequent cover up.
Trump and his lies have brought disgrace upon the presidency and our country, Noem’s failure to demand accountability from Trump makes her a party to it.
Now we are left to ask ourselves how a supposedly good Christian woman can condone lying.

  13. Porter Lansing 2017-06-15 13:06

@Roger … Do you think Trump has the integrity and honor of Nixon? I don’t think he’d step down even if every Republican in Congress requested it and he was impeached several times.

  14. Roger Cornelius 2017-06-15 13:32

    Porter,
Trump’s ego won’t allow him to step down, he would just as soon destroy the republican party than allow anyone to tell him it is time to resign or be impeached.
With only150 days into his presidency Trump has allowed the Russian investigation into the White House and as we know from history there will be more revealed as long as the investigation stretches on.
When Trump starts to ignore subpoenas and blames those that issue them he will have further and more serious problems.

I enjoy Camille Paglia, on issues we differ, but her analysis of the current situation is spot on.

…”the party spun out of control in a nationwide orgy of rage and spite”

    http://www.weeklystandard.com/camille-paglia-on-trump-democrats-transgenderism-and-islamist-terror/article/2008464

“In summary: to have any hope of retaking the White House, Democrats must get off their high horse, lose the rabid rhetoric, and reorient themselves toward practical reality and the free country they are damned lucky to live in.”

  16. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2017-06-15 14:29

Excuse me—”the party”? “orgy of rage and spite”? That seems to ignore that vast majority of work party activists are doing to register voters, recruit candidates, and raise money… and well as to ignore the real orgiastic, thoughtless rage that fueled Trump’s minority win and clouds Noem’s vision so much that she can’t call out obvious lies and unpresidential behavior.

  17. Porter Lansing 2017-06-15 14:36

Hey, Senate Minority LEADER, Billie Sutton. This is something that Noem and Jackley have no interest in, apparently. Send a letter. It’s a perfect opportunity for progress.

Sure, like all of a sudden you expect Kristi to be moral and ethical? Why would anyone think that? Poor thing, all she has is her talking points.

  19. Vance Feyereisen 2017-06-15 15:39

Every time I contact our Congressional embarrassment I will get the same set of talking points X 3. Original thought is a scarce commodity for this trio. The development of velcro must have done wonders for their shoe tying skills.

Another college dropout, Rep Steve King (IA) infamously said “they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”[64] Despite strong rebukes from Democrats and King’s fellow Republicans alike, with blunt rebukes from House speaker John Boehner, who called his statements “ignorant” and “hateful”… now, he said:

“I do want to put some of this at the feet of Barack Obama,” King said on WHO Iowa radio. “He contributed mightily to dividing us. He focused on our differences rather than our things that unify us. And this is some of the fruits of that labor.”

He is the least effective member of congress. http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/337957-gop-rep-obama-partly-responsible-for-political-divide-that-led

I believe I heard this a.m. that 50 shots were fired at the ball players, from an AK 47-that would be two high capacity dealeos with thirty 7.62 caliber rounds per magazine. hmmmm

On Wednesday morning, Senator Rand Paul said that without the response of Capitol Hill police, the Virginia shooting “would have been a massacre, because there’s no escaping a guy who has several hundred bullets”.

Paul has voted against two measures that would have placed limits on military style rifles and high-capacity ammunition magazines. Last year, he defended gun rights as an essential freedom “to shoot at the government when it becomes tyrannical!” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/15/virginia-shooting-baseball-gun-debate-republican-congress

what’s the woman’s name in the SD legislature who takes gun pointing selfies? di santo? these republicans have no cult other than the republican cult.

  23. Porter Lansing 2017-06-15 22:03

Right, Leslie. A mentally unbalanced young man opened fire in a movie theater carrying several hundred round magazines. Killed 12 and wounded 70. Gov. Hickenlooper championed our CO law that restricts gun mags to 15 rounds or less. The law was fought by Rocky Mountain Gun Owners but they lost and it’s still the law and it would have helped at the ballgame shooting.

  24. mike from iowa 2017-06-16 06:49

Wingnuts need to st#u when it comes to mass shootings. They are the ones that want John Q to have assault rifles and high capacity clips. They are the ones that want the mentally disturbed (meaning congress I guess) to be allowed to have these weapons designed only to kill other humans.

When a person decides to make dangerous toys available and then gets hurt by those same efforts, he or she has no right to complain. Wingnuts-are you listening?

  25. barry freed 2017-06-16 08:12

Wow! Actually discussing a Democrat mass murderer on DFP.

The guy had a lot of strong arguments… then he picked up a weapon. Good thing he didn’t have a machete or people would have died.

  26. mike from iowa 2017-06-16 08:28

btw-the House of reprehensibles voted to overturn recent law allowing mentally ill to buy guns. Wonder what triggered (pun intended) that change of heart.? The day of the shooting wingnuts were set to vote on silencers (suppressors) for civilian use.

If Maryland shooter had been Black or Muslim instead of white and kristian he would have been labeled a terrorist. Why the double standards?

  27. Ben Cerwinske 2017-06-17 12:17

You could have made the analogy without the use of names. Like I said, it’s at least unwise regardless of whether she used their names in the past. We all know that in some situations others can do what we cannot or should not. I think those kinds of things are unforced errors.
