Trump Gets GOP to Applaud Using Assaults on LGBTQ as Excuse for More Anti-Islam Rage

Donald Trump is the first Republican nominee to mention LGBTQ Americans in his convention speech. He applauded his fellow Republicans for applauding his promise to protect LGBTQ Americans from violence, and they applauded themselves for their humanity.

But Trump’s exact words show that even his little pander was really code for let’s go beat up Muslims!

Only weeks ago, in Orlando, Florida, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist. This time, the terrorist targeted LGBTQ community. No good, and we’re going to stop it.

As your President, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology. Believe me.

And I have to say as a Republican it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said. Thank you [Donald Trump, nomination acceptance speech, transcribed by NPR as delivered, Republican National Convention, Cleveland, Ohio, 2016.07.21].

Republicans weren’t applauding anti-discrimination laws, marriage equality, or transgender bathroom choice. Republicans weren’t repudiating conversion therapy or VP nominee Mike Pence’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Republicans weren’t overturning a platform that the Log Cabin Republicans call “the most anti-LGBT platform the Republican Party has ever had.” They were still frothing in their Two Minutes Hate, now with a clever Left-tweaking excuse to bolster their war against radical Islamic terrorism.

Trump got Republicans to applaud for attacking an oppressive foreign ideology without saying a word about their own platform’s oppressive domestic ideology. Trump is no champion for LGBTQ rights.

I’m not convinced either Trump or the assembled faithful even know what LGBTQ stands for.

    I don’t

It is funny to me that he is talking about defending LGBTQ from a hateful foreign ideology, but the GOP is not foreign.

LGBTQ in this country are more worried about hateful domestic ideologies, but Trump didn’t say anything about defending them from domestic foes.

Darin, apparently for Republicans, the LGBTQ community is like your little sister. It’s OK for you to harass and torture her, but if the neighborhood boy does it, it’s a problem?

Imagine Drumpf’s horror if a Black or Latino guy groped Ivanka the way dad did?

Like Chuck Z said it’s okay if wingnuts do it.

Trump’s acceptance speech also brought the white supremacist out of the woodwork. The are experiencing a rebirth and power with Trump at helm.

David Duke feels so comfortable with Trump he has announced another bid for the senate.

“Trump is no champion for LGBTQ rights.”

Yes he is. Trump is a liberal, Hillary/Kaine are the crony capitalists.

Sibson, Trump is no liberal. He’s not really a conservative.
The only thing he thinks about is himself. Roger is right. Trump has empowered racists such as Duke.

Chuck Z, that little-sister comment describes the GOP attitude nicely. Thank you.
