You can spend your Memorial Day weekend coming up with excuses for Trump and Clinton, or you can go help some far less political critters. The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is holding a poker run to raise money for animals in their care. Here’s their press release:

Get ready to ride! It’s time for the 17th annual Paws for a Cause Poker Run to benefit the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society! It will be held on May 28, 2016 with registration at J&L Harley-Davidson from 11am-1pm. Pre-registration is also available online at www.sfhumanesociety.com or grab a registration form at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society or at J&L Harley-Davidson. All motorcycle enthusiasts are welcome!

Join us for a great ride with chances to win some awesome prize packages! All proceeds go towards the care of the animals at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Invite your friends and don’t miss out on this great ride to help homeless pets in need! [Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, press release, 2016.05.26]

Of course, to help all those pooches, kitties, and gerbils, you’ll have to get a motorcycle and burn fossil fuels. I suppose bicyclists could register, but we people-power pedal-pushers might have trouble completing the 67.8-mile Brandon-Garretson-Renner-Hartford-Harrisburg route in the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. timeframe. (33.9 miles per hour? I don’t hit that even in Spearfish Canyon with dinner at Killian’s waiting!)

But hey, Remington and friends are counting on you! Ride on!

I suspect 11 to 1 is the time for sign up, and the riders will have all afternoon to ride the course.

I like gerbils and puppies as much as the next guy but like my good friend Lar has often told me, this is just stupid to burn up fossil fuels and risk human lives in the name of animals that probably are a problem that needs to be addressed in a different manner.
