Payday Lender Sues Jackley, Then Contributes to Jackley PAC

The payday lenders’ failed lawsuit against Attorney General Marty Jackley’s official explanation of Initiated Measure 21, the real 36% rate cap, was evidently nothing personal. The same company that sued him is also one of his biggest corporate donors:

Friends of Marty Jackley PAC, year-end campaign finance report for 2015, received by Secretary of State 2016.01.27, p. 14.
Friends of Marty Jackley PAC, year-end campaign finance report for 2015, received by Secretary of State 2016.01.29, p. 14.

An inquisitive reader urges me to check out page 14, line 2, of the 2015 year-end campaign finance report for the Friends of Marty Jackley PAC, excerpted in the above image. Formed last summer to support Jackley’s run for governor in 2018, Friends of Jackley accepted $2,500 from Select Management Resources, LLC, the company whose vice-president of operations, Erin Ageton, was suing him over his IM 21 explanation. A.G. Jackley also has to decide whether to investigate and prosecute Ageton and at least one other Select Management Resources/North American Title Loans underling for violations of South Dakota law pertaining to petitions, elections, and integrity of the notary seal. Those violations arose in the petition drive for Amendment U for Usury, the fake 18% rate cap, which Select Management Resources has bankrolled to the tune so far of nearly $2.2 million.

Jackley PAC’s other big contributors include Trump-connected pyramid schemers ACN Inc. and international law firm Cozen O’Connor, which made big money representing doomed EB-5 project Northern Beef Packers in its bankruptcy.

Message to taxpayers: You scratch my back, and I will screw you.

  2. leslie 2016-04-26 12:05

jackley has an ethical obligation to avoid the appearance of impropriety, and a complaint to the bar assn will bring action.

The other $2,500 donor is Reynolds American Incorporated, the second largest tobacco company in the United States. Justice has been purchased, at a very reasonable price, by big tobacco and a loan shark.

Ethics in South Dakota politics? Maybe after Cory wins in a landslide there will be one ethic.

Maybe I should have said-ethics in wingnut politics?

Did you notice the number of out of state donors compared to the number of South Dakota donors?

We need to question what these donors want from Jackley.

A President Trump would likely turn America into a giant Ponzi scheme. Get in line early if you want to win.

  6. bearcreekbat 2016-04-26 14:36

Roger is right – there are only 4 donors on the posted list from SD. What is that all about?

  7. Lanny V Stricherz 2016-04-26 14:58

Roger and bcb noted the same thing I did. 18 of the 22 donors listed are out of state.

  8. caheidelberger Post author | 2016-04-26 15:35

Many of those out-of-state donors are law firms. I wonder how many of them have had direct interactions with Jackley in court.

  9. Sam@ 2016-04-26 16:37

I noticed only Four donors from South Dakota -Looks like Marty has been purchased by out of staters?

  10. caheidelberger Post author | 2016-04-26 17:01

Ah, but those are the corporate/PAC donors. Check the list of itemized individual donors: over $31,000, 100% South Dakotan. Similarly on his year-end 2015 report for his AG campaign fund, which has over $416K on hand, lots more than the PAC so far: the vast majority of those individual donors list South Dakota addresses, while most of the PACs sending money are from out of state.

I wonder if out of state Republican campaign contributions to Jackley had anything to do with Jackley’s frequent decisions to use SD taxpayer dollars to join with Republican Attorneys General from other states in frivolous litigation against the feds, such as repeatedly attacking the ACA, as well as other causes near and dear, such as abortion restrictions, LBGT discrimination, etc.

I think we just need to get rid of PACS and have direct contributions to candidates.. I think both sides are guilty of screwing the people via accepting all this PAC money.

Surely Mr. Jackley knew that Mr. H would find these papers on the internet and use them in the elections. Did he not care or is this not what it seems?

  14. mike from iowa 2016-04-26 20:04

Be interesting to know if the billionaire’s trust fund owners are considered citizens and allowed to contribute to Jackley.

Grudz, what else could this be besides what it seems. Payday lender Select Management Resources gave a big campaign donation to the PAC of an AG who it was suing and who may need to investigate SMR employees for illegal activity. Why else does that happen other than to soften the AG up and protect SMR’s interests?

  17. CraigSk 2016-04-26 21:22

Cory, I would not say 100% of the individual donors, were from South Dakota. According to the reference you posted there are people from many other states that have contributed to his campaign. I see Iowa, Florida, Rhode Island, Arkansas, Minnisota, Oklahoma, Missouri, Maryland, DC, Virginia, California, Texas, Mississippi, and someone from Christiansted, Virgin Islands all listed on his 2015 Financial report Attachment A. What is with that? I guess he has many old friends that live all over that want to help make his dream come true. He is exactly what this state does NOT need as our next Governor. I have little hope our State electorate can not help themselves but to vote for the name that is familiar. Seriously, who votes on issues anymore???…by doing that one might just make things better.

  18. caheidelberger Post author | 2016-04-26 21:23

Remember, Mike, it doesn’t matter where you’re from; South Dakota campaign finance law allows foreigners to contribute to state-level campaigns.

  19. caheidelberger Post author | 2016-04-26 22:06

Whoops—to clarify: 100% of the individual donors to Friends of Marty Jackley PAC listed South Dakota addresses. The vast majority of individual donors to Jackley for Attorney General also list South Dakota addresses, but as Craig notes, several come from elsewhere.

  20. Roger Cornelius 2016-04-26 22:37

Given Jackley’s association with ACN, Inc. I wonder if he is a part of that pyramid scheme
ACN didn’t just pull Jackley’s name out of a hat, they want something from him.

  21. grudznick 2016-04-26 23:33

Mr. C, you could be on to a deep conspiracy where Mr. Jackley is some sort of puppet candidate destined to win the Governor seat in South Dakota, stringed by these ACN fellows. It could be happening, or you could be working for Mr. Mickelson and sent here to make Marty look bad. Now, I don’t think that because I have heard you speak about things and know your heart but others might think that. You should come out as anti-Marty or pro-Marty.

  22. Mark Winegar 2016-04-27 06:29

It seems Mr. Jackley is keeping some bad company. Perhaps that’s why he hasn’t prosecuted Ageton for violations ‘pertaining to petitions, elections, and integrity of the notary seal’?

  23. Porter Lansing 2016-04-27 07:01

Mean Spirited ‘ol Pat Powers is thinking, “Damn, this guy’s paying me so now I gotta’ invent some story to defend him and it’s getting harder and harder every time.”

  24. caheidelberger Post author | 2016-04-27 08:15

Indeed, Mark, my affidavit has sat on Secretary Krebs’ desk and my findings of illegal activity on the Furlong/SMR petition have been public for almost three months, and there has been no sign of action on those charges by Jackley.

Porter, Powers doesn’t think that hard. He takes his orders and publishes what he’s told. He doesn’t even invent stories any more; he just runs the press releases next to the ads.

For a brief moment, I imagined what it would be like to read your headline here, Cory, in a daily newspaper anywhere in South Dakota. This really is legitimate news. Sadly, South Dakota lacks a legitimately run daily newspaper, and Marty Jackley has absolutely no fear that word of his own corruption will ever get beyond the eyeballs that read Dakota Free Press, Constant Commoner and Northern Valley Beacon. He knows the state bar association stacks the deck to make sure no big shot Republican will ever lose any sleep over their routine unethical actions. Jackley isn’t at all concerned that general election voters will give two hoots about being a Republican siphoning gratuities from unsavory sources. All he’s concerned about it defeating Mark Mickelson, who’s already being dipped in teflon by the Sanford Leader, in a primary.

  26. Porter Lansing 2016-04-27 08:45

Right … Troy Jones will give us some long winded, discordant double-speak trying to defend his party, Powers and Mr. Jackley again. The people of South Dakota are watching closely, now.

  27. Roger Cornelius 2016-04-27 12:05

    Grudz,

Marty Jackley doesn’t need my help to look bad.

Cory didn’t create the ACN/Jackley/Trump connection, it Is reality and should raise some legitimate questions.
