Newland Creates Ballot Question Committee to Challenge “Two Deadly Drugs”

A liberal, two lobbyists, and Bob Newland walk into Shantel Krebs’s office….

In what promises to be great fun, Hot Springs photographer, Libertarian, and marijuana advocate Bob Newland has filed a statement of organization for a ballot question committee.

Its name: Consistent South Dakota.

Its mission: “We intend to bring So. Dak. law into closer adherence [to] common sense. The state should not profit from the legal transfer of two deadly drugs, while punishing the transfer of benign herbs.”

A judge punished Newland in 2009 for possessing what he would call benign herbs by putting Newland in prison for 45 days and ordering him to remain publicly silent on medical marijuana for a year.

Newland’s ballot question committee filing now suggests he will take on a role as an anti-drug warrior. This should be fun.

seemingly odd judicial restraint of an issue (mm) that even infamous frmer chief (and friend) tom hennies ironically(?) championed as a subsequent legislator. the judge perhaps had a bias and should have been bounced as a long time well known AA member, which often brings with it a whole passel of values and interests (bias) toward protecting minors that are perhaps stonger than in the average citizen. just thinking out loud.

can’t stifle speech based on wealth but can stifle mm politics. seems unconstitutional.

This is actually very good news for all of us all. Mr. Newland, when he is not all mellowed from his weeds, is a good rabble rouser and can be of a lot of assistance to the sinking parties in our great state here that is not Iowa, it is South Dakota, and Bob is a great South Dakotan.

It should be clear now that Mr. Newland’s quiet time is long over, he wasn’t really all that quiet during that time. That said he should be careful should the man go after him for his corporate narcing.

The weirdest part of the sentencing hearing (for my possession conviction in 2009) was the several minutes devoted by Judge Delaney to his admiration for Muhammad Ali and his draft-resistance actions. I am not sure, but I think he was making a comparison between Ali and me, although it strains my imagination to make the connection.

As for the gag order, phhht. It would have been PUNISHMENT had he banned me from visiting Walmart for a year.

Just now on Bill Janklow’s idea of public radio Jonathan Ellis called cannabis fairly benign compared to deaths attributed to tobacco and alcohol.

National Geographic “WEED” issue on news stands now has a more or less balanced story on marijuana and medicine. The US classification putting weed in same category as heroin is nonsense in my opinion. I have not used either and don’t smoke tobacco or drink alcohol, so my perspective may be off.

The National Geographic story presents overviews of some medical experiments and that strongly suggests that the federal opposition may be denying many people with a variety of diseases benefits of some of the ingredients in marijuana. The issue story, however, also indicates that marijuana may cause brain disorders in those under two years old.

The auto crashes caused by alcohol in a single year just in South Dakota probably exceed all the direct damage caused by marijuana users for the whole US. The court costs and costs of imprisonment of marijuana users on the other hand seem to be a huge waste and also the primary threat to the health and well-being of users.
